Thought this might be interesting.... AG225HSP |
I've always been curious why these are needed. Don't all laptops technically have a WiFi finder built in? |
I guess you just don't have to switch your laptop to find a hotspot to connect to... i've seen people using it for site survey in wireless installations... however not sure how reliable that unit is in that area. |
I'm also thinking that, if you don't have a laptop, this will help you troubleshot wifi signal issues. |
It would be convenient if you don't want to pull out your whole laptop to find a signal. On another note... I can't speak for the going rate of this particular wifi finder, but I know other wifi finders can regularly be found at this price point. |
These are great. I hated to unpack the laptop just to see if there was a signal nearby and find there wasn't. I've tried many other finders, and they rarely did anything of value. I've been using one like this for about 3 years, when they were about $75. Li-Ion battery lasts for months as a finder, and it charges when plugged into the USB port. It shows all the signals in range with signal strength, band, security encryption, and SSID. I also use it for wireless installations to help position equipment. Very handy. The signal strength on this is comparable to what my laptop shows. I like mine so much I bought 5 (rebate limit) of them for gifts when the were on sale about 1 month ago for $12 AR. But this is a good deal too. This is both a standalone wifi "finder" for A/B/G/N signals and a USB wifi adapter. You can plug it in to your USB port and it will then connect to any signal that it finds (subject, of course, to such either being non-secure signals or ones for which you have a password). This also can be used as a repeater/access point so that you can share your wireless connection with others. You can be in a group and after you connect to the internet (wired or the laptop's adapter) others can connect to you thru this. SPECS Comes with wrist strap, USB extension cable System Requirement: *for 54Mbps Data Rate |
The SP version is the same as v1.0, neither of which support Vista or the N protocol, you need v1.5 for those features (at least according to Zyxel TS). |

From the Factory site: The ZyXEL AG-225HSP is the ultimate tool for today’s road warrior. Combining a Wi-Fi HotSpot Finder together with a USB Wi-Fi Adapter makes the AG-225HSP the most versatile wireless tool on the market today. Detecting ALL flavors of wireless networking from 802.11g/b to 802.11a and the new Draft 11n standard, the AG-225HSP truly is a jack of all trades. Small enough to fit in your pocket, powerful enough to be used by the most demanding of users, the ZyXEL AG-225HSP is the perfect tool! |
The thing I'm wondering is, I've seen pictures of an "AG-225H V2" out there. It has a form factor more like one of Zyxel's USB wifi adapters, but most importantly, it has a backlight for the LCD screen, which would make it far more useful. Does anyone know if this one has that? Digging around on both Zyxel's site and Newegg turned up nothing. Edit: AG-225H V2 from the UK |
NOTE THAT THIS DOES NOT WORK IN VISTA!!!! |
This thing is Huge. Not a good usb woreless g, and for the rest not cool either. It is HUGE. |
Dimensions 3.8" x 1.1" x 0.6" That's huge? |
I know, time machine and all that but this was $11.99AR last month and there's discussion about this device here. Its no bigger than any other external wireless adapter. I guess "HUGE" is in the eye of the beholder... |

mine is still on backorder with Buy.com |
I suspect that these have been on sale because their manufacturer mistakingly put HSP's in the H package. It's a AG-225H box but the UPC had a bigger UPC sticker on it saying AG-225HSP. |
mooty said:What color are the LED scanning-indicator and power-on lights on this thing ? If it is blue, then it is the older model one; if they are green, then the LCD screen lights up and can be read in bad or no light. I have both models, thinking I had lost the original one (lo and behold, only to be refound stached somewhere under my car seat) and ordered another one, which they sent me as the later green LED'ed model. |
