Staples has the APC Back-UPSŪ ES 550VA 8-Outlet "Green" UPS for $64.98, before a $10 instant rebate and a $10 easy rebate. The easy rebate comes on a prepaid VISA card.

Total cost before rebate is $54.98, which is above $50, so free shipping. Current price at Newegg is $64.99 plus $20.79 shipping.

What "Green" actually means: (from an article about a similar model)
The device sports master/controlled outlets that cut down on energy consumption by automatically shutting down power to unused peripherals, such as printers, scanners and speakers when your Mac is in sleep mode. The master outlet is designed to sense current drawn by connected equipment, typically a computer. When your Mac powered down or goes into sleep mode, the master outlet automatically shuts down the controlled outlets, which consume power even when the computer is off. By cutting power to these "dark loads", the APC Back-UPS ES 750 can provide a combined savings of US$40 per year on average as compared with competitors' models, according to Joe Loberti, senior vice president, Home and Distributed Systems, APC. source

Seems like a decent deal. Green for posting an environmentally-friendly product.

You can also use a $25-off-75 coupon (google for "ejunkie Staples", $3 delivered) and pickup a $20+ filler for nearly the same final cost. I got this UPS and a 100-spindle of DVD+R's for $57.71 shipped w/ tax ($60.71 if you factor the coupon) but before the $10 rebate.

Or you can get the higher capacity 750 model for around $60+ after coupon and rebate, which is half what it would cost at Newegg after shipping.

good call on the 750va. It seems like a really good deal. Very tempted to pull the trigger.

soooo.. Staples has is it for 54.98 plus a $10 rebate with 2% CashBack and FS

and CC has it for 55.98 and no rebate, with 2% CashBack and FS

i'm having trouble seeing why to get it from CC unless this it's OOS at Staples or you just don't like them.

Hmm, the master outlet thing is pretty neat. The older model ES-550 don't even shut down the "surge only" outlets when you turn the master switch off.

If I want to protect a 46" lcd TV, a A/V Receiver and maybe a DVD player, can this one, APC Back-UPSŪ ES 550VA, do the job???
Note that I do NOT need the "battery backup" part, I only need the "surge protection" part.
The reason I'm asking now and not using/buying the "surge protector" (such SurgeArrest, and the alike) itself is I think the UPS is the best surge protector.
We know that high-end surge protector such APC SurgeArrest High Performance yields 2030 joules, while this one only rated at 365 joules, and we also all know that the bigger number, the better it protects against voltage spike.
So, go for SurgeArrest with high number of joules or go for the UPS since it's the best surge protection????
I guess, for example, after a lightning strike, my lcd tv, Rxver, dvd player still works fine after all in both scenerios but the UPS will be fried (if I use it instead of the Surge Protector).

I almost bought the 550, liked the specs, but then dropped down to the 350 because all I really wanted was it to keep the puter running long enough to shut it down. Just unboxed the 350 and, unlike the 550 and every other modern UPS I've seen, it doesn't have a USB port (or any type of port) to communicate with the PC. Dang. What a waste.
