naps96 said:not to rub it in, but why are people buying crap tv for $600, when they could've got a brand name (LG, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, etc) for the same price about 7-8 months ago? I got my sharp 42" LCD for around $650 (after taxes), 42" LG LCD for $550, 47" LG LCD for $750. What I'm saying is that there are better deals, wait for it, and don't just jump to the cheapest turd. Of course, unless u need a tv tomorrow.
And just because Haier is a big company in China, does not make it not a junk. Junk is a junk, whether made from GE or Haier. Were your TVs 720 or 1080? |

I almost bit on it but will wait a while longer. |

I've never even heard of this brand, is it any good? Based on the thread rating, it sounds like a good brand or a ridiculously good deal. |

I bought one. Have been watching it for 2 days now. Bought it because I've been watching for several weeks, and was getting a little impatient since the old TV was pretty much trash. I spent a few hours in Costco, BB looking at TVs. So far, this TV doesn't disappointed me at all. Maybe if I set it side by side with a Samsung I could tell the difference, but I can't. I haven't seen another deal close to this in terms of price. Most other deals I'd have paid shipping, sales tax or both. $599 out the door is a good deal to me. Set arrived with no dead pixels, the remote works great, picture is solid from a variety of sources (have used S-Video, HDMI and VGA). The only thing left to be desired I would say are the built in speakers are pretty crappy. I am not using the TV speakers though so this is not important to me. |

Very good post and thanks for pointing out the differences in 720p, 1080p, Plasma v/s LCD etc., I ordered a Philips 47" LCD after reading about the deal last week in forums here. So I am a bit disappointed to see you rate it as 2nd tier. However, I will post my opinion about the TV after I receive it this week.
Anyone here have a Philips LCD size 40" and above and if so what is your opinion ? It is true that Philips is not the greatest, but most come with my spouse's favorite feature: Smart Sound If you are planning on just using the TV's speakers then this sound leveling feature could be valuable to you. It takes the edge out of some sudden changes, like LOUD COMMERCIALS and dramatic sound contrasts in movies. What I mean is that my spouse is willing to get a Philips just for this feature (if they haven't mucked it up yet). |

your wrong also. the majority of Sony r manufactured by samsung. meaning Sony dont make its own flat panel. also pioneer dont make its own plasma; its made by matsushita(panasonic). so saying Sony is better than samsung dont make n e sense. also LG, Philips & zenith are all related. even the ticker on wallsteet has it as LG/Philips. Sharp has not kept up with its technology & has too many banding issues & consumers report dont rate them favorably these days. Demosthenes9 said:go4broke said:When it comes to LCDs and plasmas, these are the general guidelines:
Top tier: Sony, Samsung, LG, & Pioneer (plasmas) Second tier: Philip, Vizio, Sharp Third tier: pretty much anything not in 1st and 2nd tiers
Wow, kind of have to severely disagree with you here since you only have three "tiers" of manufacturers for starters and you don't discuss the different "tiers" that each manufacturer competes in. What I mean by this is that many manufacturers have top, middle, and even low end offerings to compete in each market niche.
If you are looking at the "top of the line" from each company, Sony and Pioneer would be at the top. Sharp, Panasonic and Samsung would be next. LG would fall below the other five but would rank slightly ahead of Vizio, Phillips, and some other rebadged panels.
At the lowest end of the scale would be many of the "fly by night" kind of names that you would see only 1 or 2 models from.
With all that said, it gets complicated when you start looking at specific sets because a "high end" LG would probably be compared to a middle or bottom "tier" Sony or Samsung.
BTW, I should note that the rankings above have NOTHING to do with VALUE, but only focuses on image quality and performance. VALUE is a completely different question and is extremely subjective.
Is a top "tier" Sony 52" XBR6 @ $3499.00 a better "value" than an LG 52LG60 @ $2179.00? To me, no. I would go with the LG. Then again, I could go with the Sony KDL-52V4100 @ $2300 instead of the LG. |

I'm not sure if Sony's panels are made by Samsung, but what about their internal wiring? I've heard (maybe its this thread) that Samsung's have much inferior internal electronics and so tend to break down much sooner than Sonys. Also, I believe that Panasonic will soon start to make the Pioneer panels, but Pioneer is still making its own now. So if you want a Pioneer panel, go buy one before the next generation. Bottom line - unless its simply complete rebadging, there will be some differences between brands even if the same company manufactures the panels. |

Penguin33 said:720p vs. 1080p HDTV: The final word An otherwise good article, but it's irresponsible to talk about the difference between 720p and 1080p without mentioning the impact of viewing distance. 1080p will be more noticeable on a 32" set at 5' than on a 50" set at 10'. I like Carlton Bale's chart and article on the subject. |
