..buy it someplace that offers a cheap extended warranty (or on a credit card that doubles the warranty), because you will NEVER be able to get anyone to service these no-name brands. |

...a little off topic, but I've been hemming and hawing about getting an LCD TV for more than a year now. I was trying to decide whether to get a cheaper no-name or hope for a price mistake/closeout/pricematch opportunity on a name-brand high-quality set. With the eBay CashBack deal (30% off), I was able to get exactly the set I wanted (highly-rated current-gen Samsung 32-inch) for the price of a Vizio/Westinghouse...after I get my $200 back from Microsoft. Just a thought for those of you thinking about this model. Sure, mine's not 42", but 32 is the biggest that fits in my cabinet, and it didn't end up costing $600 either. It'll be $475 net when I get the $ back. Again, not threadcrapping -- $599 is a sweet price for a 42" LCD -- just wanted to remind folks of other options. |

I just can't trust anyone claiming to have the best TV in his life when in fact he busted his butt on black friday to buy a haier brand for $499. Well my guess if you had bought this Haier you could have saved yourself a lot of money buying all those other tv's. |

The "rating" system is a joke on this site. People post valid critical opinions and they are almost always given tons of red. I mean the first guy was right. Any guy who busted his butt in the cold to get a 42" his first LCD isn't really someone to want screen advice. It's like you all are a bunch of vahjayjays |

One guy, a true FWer, is perfectly happy with his first ever LCD TV. One guy, who seems to go through a lot of LCD TVs, thinks the former has never experienced life. My suspicion is he will never be satisfied with any LCD TV until the Second Coming. Hey, if that guy thinks a McDonald's Big Mac is the best hamburger in the world, leave him alone rather than telling him he is a fool until he tries this and that. |

Panasonic is in the top 3 for sure. I don't count Sony as they use Sharp panels and then spend millions to get Peyton Manning to tell you to buy their HDTV's. However, isn't it pretty much well known that retailers specifically tweak the calibrations to make the higher end sets like Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic look much better than lower ends such as Olevia/westinghouse/Vizio/etc.? Actually, possibly to the contrary. Unless things have changed since I got my Panny plasma a few years ago, they actually pump the brightness and contrast out of the box on order to catch the buyer's eye first. The Panny sets were so badly tweaked that they got a nickname of "clayface" for the dirtorted, blotchy colors you get out of the box (and on the store shelf). After you adjusted the settings back to the recommended settings found on many websites, the picture quality is outstanding. I just goes to show that you cannot judge a TV by looking at them in the store, or by taking them home and setting them up. And you can forget about asking the salesperson. Do your research before you buy, then make your decision and go find it at the best price. Also be sure you know the difference between LCD and Plasma. There are definite differences between the two. Don't let 1080 be one of them. You have to be very close to a very big screen to tell the difference between 1080 and 720. It sucks to spend money on a useless feature. My 720p Panny plasma takes my breath away and I have NEVER wished for 1080. Other differences are viewing angle. Very important to some people. Advantage Plasma. Is your TV going to be used mainly in a sunny environment? Advantage LCD. How concerned are you about your electricity bills? Advantage LCD. Only care about the best picture quality in terms of contrast (deep blacks) color saturation and accuracy? You really need to consider Plasma. Do your homework. You don't need to buy a half dozen TVs to get a good one. Do your homework. |

Hey, if that guy thinks a McDonald's Big Mac is the best hamburger in the world, leave him alone rather than telling him he is a fool until he tries this and that. I currently own all the TVs I've listed except the 42 Vizio Plasma and 42" Sceptre LCD. I had a severe burn in issue with the Vizio and ended up upgrading to 52" philips LCD. 42" Sceptre was poor in quality and lacked 1+ HDMI input so that was replaced with 50" Panasonic Plasma. I still have all the others in my spare bedrooms. I personally like the quality of Plasma over LCD, but I like the overall usage of LCD over Plasma considering HTPC and low power usuage. The reason for my op was to not flame or bust his ball for having an el cheapo black friday plasma but to let everyone know that he is not in position to lead everyone to think that it is an exceptional plasma. If he came forward with his exp in many lcd/plasma with this el cheapo, then I would've taken his post more seriously. Luckybum, I don't want to discourage you from posting HOT deals and I certainly appreciate it. I am just simply giving my thoughts and possible risks to purchasing a no brand tv. |

Ultimately if the display looks good on its own (and that's very subjective), that's all that really matters. I have a question ... does this Corion 42" support flipping the screen vertically? (so that top shows on bottom, and bottom shows on top). One mounting location I'm considering might lend itself to that. |

FountainBlue said:Haier is one of the top electronic appliance manufacturer in China, equivalent of Maytag or GE here. I do not think there is any doubt that Haier is one of the largest appliance manufacturers, but to equate that to a GE is unreasonable. Being large does not necessarily mean you manufacture quality products. Haier became large because they undercut their competitors with low prices. This also applies to a lot of the companies based in City of Industry, CA. Because of the significant tax breaks they receive, I would bet that most of the companies there are concerned more about prices than anything else (including quality/customer service, etc.) Many Chinese businessmen have import businesses set up there because of its close proximity to Los Angeles and China. This is where you get all those new repackaged brands we all never heard of. City of Industry background |

Great price op but I would really like to see this in person. I bought an Oliva (sp?) at Circuit City on Black Friday and it was a piece of junk. I just don't want to be in that same situation. Does anyone on here actually OWN this TV?? |
