gwah said:i think all the naysayers for this laptop are all ebayers trying to keep the product for themselves. you aint gone get no c2d 8400 laptop for same, without using a credit card/or busting some heads in the lines outside the store. http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLB6M i bought the Toshiba celeron 430 )with vista basic upgrade) for $250 at the best buy after thanksgiving sale two years ago, and i don't regret it one bit. it is my main away surfing machine. Any seller in the right mind wouldn't try to sell this one. Even if they are selling get it from them as it would be cheaper than this and will be shipped to your door. You don't get a c2d but a dual core (Intel or AMD) better than this new celeron (single core). Frankly I am seeing a celeron lappy deal after some time here. If it qualifies for that $30 MIR from HP, then may be this is a good buy. |

Quote from SD.. The Celeron processor inside this laptop is a model 575, which was JUST released (I believe it hit the market this september 2008) and is a Core 2 Solo without features like SpeedStep. Otherwise it has all the same features (cache, bus speed, etc). What does this mean? It will perform just as well, but won't slow down the processor when idle to conserve battery. So if you are worried about battery AND performance, its not the processor for you. If you can live with 1.5 hour battery times, then the processor is just fine. What is a Core 2 Solo? Its the same as a Core 2 Duo, but without the extra core. What does this mean? Applications that can utilize multiple cores/processors won't run as well on this processor as a Core 2 Duo. However, that is a limited situation, as not all applications can utilize multiple cores. Vista can, XP can, applications like Office, Photoshop, etc can. Games? Most do not. So in terms of gaming, the performance will be similar. The video card isn't spectacular, however its a nice step up. In comparison to an nVidia 8400GM (which is an add-on card option, not integrated graphics), the 4500MHD (also known as X4500) can pretty much keep up. I actually have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Core2Duo 1.5ghz and X3100 integrated graphics and I can play some games nicely (Battlefield 1942, Sims2, etc). Obviously none of the high-end games of today will run on my setup, and I don't expect them to. When comparing the X3100 to this laptop's 4500MHD (X4500), the 4500 has twice the performance. Whats my point? The laptop isn't a horrible deal, but its not an amazing one either. It does all the basics (internet, email, office applications, etc), can play DVDs and music, and can do some gaming. Everyone here wants to say "no gaming!" when that isn't correct. The correct answer is that it will do SOME gaming. No its not a gaming laptop, but yes you can play some games. World of Warcraft, Quake3, Unreal Tournament 2004, etc....they will all work on this laptop. Remove Vista and install XP, and now you've free'd up resources (both memory and processor) for an even better experience. Also, if you decide the processor isn't good enough in a year, you can upgrade it. The laptop can handle any of the Socket P processors available today (which go up to a 2.5ghz Core 2 Duo). On eBay you can find 1.5ghz Core 2 Duo Socket P processors (same as whats in my Dell) for $50 and the better 2ghz model (more cache and higher bus) for $100-150. So basically, $400-450 for a 2ghz Core 2 duo laptop with 2gb ram, 160gb harddrive, good integrated graphics card, 15" widescreen, DVD+-RW drive, etc. Again where can you get a similar spec m/c for $298? Also people who bought this morning are finding it quite good and fast. Read some other forums... |

Acer Extensa EX4420-5963 14.1" 2GB RAM (expandable to 4GB) AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core with 64 bit platform 160GB card reader, Vista Premium is still available at some Best buys and the price went down again. check your stores (link sku 8892772). Better laptop for about 335-375 (w tax). If not available at best buy near you check eBay for even less after live.com Cash Back. |

After all fanagling you might get around $375. So for 75-100$ more, I get an extra core BUT a smaller screen with the Extensa. The Compaq is 15.4" I can find you for $50-75 something which will be better than the Extensa - so what? Also just like that Extensa with AMD, the Celery is also 64 bit and mem expandable to 4GB. Additionally the CPU has the same slot as a top line Core2 Duo. So tomorrow if you are bored with the speed, you can easily upgrade to a Core2 Duo - no sweat. So again for $298 where is a better one? Realize there is always a better one for couple of bucks more. |

many prefer smaller screen for portability. smaller screen laptops are expensive. I don't know what you searched on eBay but I found these for "Acer EX4420" new in box, BIN search - 356 after cb (link), 366 after cb (link) shipped. Surprisingly not many. And again, it is not 298, it is 322 after tax + gas + stay in line & hassle. So for 30 more bucks you get an extra core (well tested processor as it is not new in market), card reader, vista premium, shipped etc. Acer was an example, there are others too. I felt that celeron is a big no, but may be this new one is better (still can't just go with what someone here wrote about it, any numbers online?). |

Looking for a sucker? I fail to understand your odd observation. It's called English. They are looking for a "sucker" to buy their laptop. A "sucker" is a chimp, fool, idiot, etc, etc. |

Still looking though. I know. I started there. I took a couple of hours today and finally tracked them all down. |

The XP device drivers for the laptop can be found in the thread below, look for the post done by user andersonmanly: XP Driver thread Direct link to the XP driver .iso he made is here: XP Driver .iso Since this laptop is VERY NEW, it usually takes some time for (a) people to find the right drivers (b) the manufacturer to respond to requests to put XP drivers up on their site. HAPPY XP INSTALLING GUYS! |
