I prefer Costco. Costco has lots of luxury hard to find onetime sale of items. I found a discontinued Lladro for $390 which was selling for well over $900 in the net. That savings alone is good enough for 8 years of membership I had with them. And btw Costco makes most of their profits in membership sales (last I read $1.2 billion), they have a very small % markup on their merchandise (its capped at 14%). |

i didnt get the book last time and i dont expect to get one this time either. At any rate, my costco has been doing automatic coupon off at the register, so i dont have to flip around booklets anymore. |

Supporting article for Costco 14% max markup and all profit came from membership fees I have been Costco member for over 12 years and I am very happy with their hand picked product selections and feel confident on getting the best deals every time I shop there. |

I think it was the Fairfax VA Costco, but they had just the batteries. Not sure what price ($15? $20? after coupon). I went to another Costco a few months ago, and they changed the packaging of the kit. When I got the kit, it came with a plastic case that would fit the charger and batteries. The new kit package does not include a plastic case. Weren't people all over the pizza coupon last time? Oops. I think this is the one in the refrigerated section, not the already cooked ones. |

Here is my Costco rant: If your membership expires in July and you don't renew until November, they treat it like you renewed in July, and your membership expires the next July instead of November. So while you didn't use or shop at Costco for 4 months you get charged for those four months. They should prorate or move your expiration date. A ripoff is you ask me. |

FrugalDutchman said:One of the reasons why I prefer costco is that the CEO is OK with 100K in annual salary. He also pays the employees over $20/hr.(60minutes had a story on him). I don't mind at all CEO's getting paid far more then 100K but what we have seen in the last 10 years is just crazy. Other then that; after reading more about WalMart and seeing "The high cost of low prices; WalMart" I just HAD to get rid of my sams membership.
Corporate responsibility gets my business anytime. The CEO makes $450,000 a year but holds $151 million worth of Costco stock. |

to say that costco has higher quality with all their food isn't true. i've had to take things back to costco, and that never happened in the past. i will say that the majority of their food is premium quality, and that paying the same price for meat there as at a grocery store is a better deal, but there isn't anything automatic about them being better than sam's, at least not now. As I understand it (explained by a friend who was working on an MBA, and for whom WalM@rt was a marketing case study), the policy at WalM@rt is to deliberately solicit manufacturers to cut costs in any way possible - including lowering quality - while encouraging / requiring them to put the items in packaging that made them indistinguishable from their "regular quality" products. Brand name manufacturers tend not to reduce quality (or at least not by much), because it has a negative effect on their brand quality identification; but the generic imports are typically of very low quality, so that the margins can be kept more reasonable.
Regardless of whether this is true, I do know that the difference between how Costco treats its employees and how Sam's treats theirs are very significantly different. It is for that reason alone that I don't shop at Sam's.
I doubt that this is true. Some brand name products are much cheaper at Costco than retail stores. They either have to lower their quality (or use of premium ingredients) or raise their price elsewhere to supplement those at wholesale store. The point was that Costco doesn't do this while WalMart does. |
