I wouldn't be surprised if he and "Storerobber" were one and the same. Onion surfaced about the same time the "other" one vanished.
Same obnoxiousness, though!
I never had any other FW account. FW can confirm. At any rate, you have to understand that 99% people are not educated in electrical engineering or thermal dynamics. This is what Antec prey upon, the lack of education of the general public. Im not being rude here, all I am providing is factual knowledge and the reality that we live in. Like I said, Anyone who disagrees is simply not educated in electrical engineering and thermal dynamics....like I said, Im not being rude but people with lack of education are easy to manipulate and this is what Antec is doing hence the reason why I hate this product so.

I don't see why people should attack onion. S/he is entitled to opinions. What I'd like to know is if there's a laptop cooler onion would recommend.

No you dont need a laptop cooler as heat does not realistically reduce the life of laptops. The main cause of laptop failures from heat are due to the heatsink fins being clogged with dust and in this case these laptop cooler gimmicks will not save you either way. Blow the heatsink out with a can of compressed air and you will be fine.

I had an HP with bad thermal design, and that thing was running too hot from the beginning. Under the laptop, it was so hot I could actually feel the heat through the table after a while when I was running full load on it

something like this would've helped it out.

using compressed air to blow out the heatsink might not always work either, especially if you don't do it regularly. The dust tends to bunch up into larger pieces, making it hard for the pieces to go through the air in/out grills, and thus exit the laptop.

btw, the heat owned my laptop within a year. Motherboard was heat-damaged. Good thing I had warranty on it. They replaced the motherboard with a new revision, and it seems to be fine now. If less than 1 year isn't a short life for a laptop, then I don't know what you mean by a realistic reduction.

The good news:

Onion lives!!

The bad news:

Onion lives!!

Seriously, it is reassuring to know Onion is here as always expressing his (albeit controversial) opinion. I was afraid he was ill or dead. Neither would be a desirable outcome or a good thing. If Onion were to pass away, his on-line wake would attract the attention of millions of FatWalleters. Onion is the heart and soul of FatWallet.

But at the same time it's good to see so many folks doing the right thing, ignoring our beloved Onion's counsel, and saving their laptops by buying this cooler.

And Onion never did respond to my post about this cooler helping those nuts enough to operate their laptops on AC power with their Li-Ion battery in place. Folks, when not in use that battery, charged to roughly 50%, belongs in your refrigerator (but NOT EVER in your freezer). But if you are too lazy to refrigerate your battery, this cooler will help prolong its life. Elevated temperature is an even larger enemy of Li-Ion batteries than it is of laptops. And it does neither any good!

I have always left ALL my laptops (and I have too many if you ask my wife) plugged into AC, with the battery attached.
If I don't, and want to use one that I haven't in awhile I get cr*ppy battery life if it has been unplugged.

I have had an old SOTEC laptop running 24/7 for the last 4 years as a makeshift desktop computer, and can unplug it and take it with me.

Of course YMMV, but I haven't had ANY problems leaving my laptops on permanent charge.

Antec makes one specifically designed for that purpose, but its $70!

In for one -- my brother has a Sony BX540 (remember the trade up deal?) and a BIOS upgrade for that thing makes it trigger the fan at practically room temperature and it whines. For $8, it is worth a try to see if it will quite it down.

edit: Battery in or out debate: The battery is my UPS. That thing is staying with the laptop!

Does this work well with the HP tx2500z the 12.1 inch tablet, or should I get a smaller one? thanks

I wasn't around for that debate. But I always thought these things were moronic.
Indeed you are correct. Antec is well known for creating many useless products catered to the uninformed. In the link you posted I have provided enough information to open up peoples eyes to reality.

I would disagree there. I don't think antec invented the laptop cooler. They do however make some great computer cases. All my desktops are now in Antec cases (P182 and an HTPS fusion), plus I have a really nide esata HDD case from them. I really like theor designs and the cases are very solid.

I just looked around the room and decided I've got issues. We have 6 laptops and 2 desktops in our livingroom. Time to get away form fatwallet for a while.

Now that's TOO FUNNY!!!

Here's one thing that hasn't been mentioned. Laptop case warping. If I had it to do over again, I'd ahve bought a cooler for my Toshiba 17" desktop replacement. The heat from the (non-mobile) cpu has warped the hinges and now the screen doesn't close properly. Also, this thing will fry your eggs if you keep it in your lap more than an hour, if you get my drift.

Ordered 2, got them today. Build quality is so-so, fan is a bit noisy on high and marginal on low. They were cheap enough, not sure how long they'll last.
