I LOVE when Microsoft throws money at stuff to try to make it successful!

They did something like this with Passport.com a long time ago as well, when they were trying to promote single sign on, sort of the precursor to google checkout.

The 25% off eBay is usually still a better deal for most items, but this is definitely useful for items that you'd rather pick up in store or items that are prohibitively expensive to ship.

Thanks OP!

dnaL0R said:so even if i do get an email notification from MS Live confirming my purchase, it still has a possibility of getting "lost in transition" after i try to redeem it? and by the time i finally realize that i will not be getting my CB, it will be too late to return the product...

Yep welcome to MS Live CB. With the exception of a few random eBay/MS Live transactions which are now paying CB instantly you to wait 60 days AFTER your eligible purchase(s) posts to your MS Live CB account to claim them. Then you STILL have to wait another 14+ days for them to process your payment. It is during that processing period that the first actual examination of eligibility of your purchase(s) is determined by MS and the retailer. The inital post of CB to your CB means NOTHING.

Unlike the eBay/MS Live promotion which shows your Live CB percentage upfront, the actual amount of CB you may receive and also puts that amount on your eBay printable invoice when you click through a regular MS Live CB merchant you have ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF what the MS Live CB was when you made your purchase. It never shows at ANY point during the transacion or on ANY documentation from the merchant. If something goes wrong as it frequently does you have NO PROOF to force MS to pay. This is NOT a mistke on MS's part! They know without proof you cannot even file a standing BBB complaint against them letalone a small claims suit.

lament said:cnIsfg said:Yes IF MS Live CB actually answered and investigated your missing transactions via that email address. However this is NOT the case. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to get an answer and even then it is a canned automated response. They use to have a live chat feature on that page but it took 4-5 hours of waiting in queue to get a rep and then they still provided the same we are looking into it response so MS removed it from the MS Live CB site. Bottom line MS Live CB is great as long as everything works. However whne somethign goes wrong you are SOL with no chance of getting problems addressed letalone resolved.

yeah that couldn't be further from my experience. The "canned automated response" is an email letting you know that your inquiry was received, which is then followed by a real person.

I got a response within 24 hours.

LOL YEH Right !Then you are the one in a million. There are at LEAST a dozen MS Live CB threads over in DD with MANY posts complaining about 3+ week canned responses and many that never got a respose at all letalone any real person resoponse or resolution

Edit: Correction - There are now over 30 MS Live CB Problem threads in DD

Beckles said:ktg said:We're all waiting to hear if someone gets a confirmation from MSLiveSearch that the CashBack is confirmed on their purchase...I think folks are losing sight that the way it works with eBay, showing you the Cash Back during purchase, is the exception, not the rule with MS Live Cash Back, as it is with every other Cash Back (or points or miles) site I've ever used. You're always taking it on faith the money will show up, and usually it does.

Agree with you in principle, but in this case, I'm not referring to eBay---I'm alluding to the fact that there are people posting that they got confirmation on Overstock.com C@ashback transactions within minutes. Would be very reassuring to see at least one person post that a CC transaction showed up in their LiveSearch transaction account in a similar fashion.

I'm treading with caution on this one for several different reasons. There's a separate thread about a new LiveSearch 15% discount at TigerDirect right now. Judging from the TD link which LiveSearch produces, it's possible that the 15% discount is only applicable to desktop computers, not everything at their site. That leaves me wondering if CC is really offering an across-the-board discount here, or if the discount is only active on certain items. How will we know until a confirmation comes in? Something of a crap shoot.

Frankly, I went crazy during the eBay LiveSearch 30-35% discounts, and should cool off on impulse buying. I'm happy sitting this one out --- at least until I know that the 20% is guaranteed.

I've used Live CashBack and gotten all of them approved. They are on 'hold' for about 90 days to make sure you don't return the item. I've never had a vendor try to withhold one, though they don't have to honor it if you use any discount or coupon during the purchase. So, using AAA is a risky move. For a chance at 30% off, you may wind up with 10% off instead.

Still, if you are willing to accept the dicey nature of CC (being in bankruptcy and all), you could get some beter than BF deals.

Samsung 40" 1080P HDTV $1099 - $300 = $799 on-line. If you camp out, you 'might' get one of them for $699 on BF. However, if you buy on-line for $799 now and leisurely pick up in-store, then you'll get $159.80 back in 90 days.

$799 - $159.80 - $639.20.

Not sure if you save the sales tax by buying on-line, but that would certainly add up to more significant savings. Also, sometimes CC will throw in other offers (discounts on Blue Ray or other video components) if you buy a big TV. So you might benefit there, also.

Still, no need to pull the trigger on this today. I'm waiting to see what Frys, Microcenter, Buy.com, and a few others do before final decision time.

I am wondering if this works on laptops

alert mods

Combining this with the deal from this thread, you could get a PS3 for under $200! ($400 - 20% + tax - $150)!

Yes, this works on everything at Circuit City other than gift cards. It might "look" like it works on gift cards but it's explicitly stated to be a violation of Live.com's TOS, so just don't do it.

For those doubters.. I just did an order using this same technique with Drugstore.com for a waterpik. The normal live.com CashBack is 10% if you search in the stores/CashBack section. If you type what you're looking for at plain old live.com, up came a 25% CashBack link to Drugstore.com (just like the one I posted above for CircuitCity). Clicked it and got 25% confirmation banner.

Ordered the product, and within 5 minutes I got an email AND had this in my Live.com CashBack account:

November 25, 2008 Drugstore.com $12.50 Pending Date of purchase:November 25, 2008 Purchase ID:40xxxx18002xxxx Go to store
You can request your CashBack reward in 59 days.
Drugstore.com Unit price:$49.99 CashBack (%):25.00 % Quantity:1 $12.50

So, again, this was a unique plain old live.com CashBack link, ala the infamous eBay link, NOT a live.com/CashBack store browsing or product finding link, and the % offered was 25%, much higher than the 10% if you go directly to the store links.

is there any way I can tell for sure if live discount works or not?
