cheapest I could find if you need the lens now

Don't forget CashBack!

Just an FYI - I've heard a lot of rumors regarding Nikon increasing the price of their cameras and lens starting in early Feb (roughly 10%).

Great lens btw, I recently got the 1.4 and I'm very happy with it. Good find

This is an excellent lens, and I'm so happy to own it. It's $110 (shipped) from both Amazon and B&H and both sites have stellar reviews for the lens. I got it for just a few dollars less in November.

FW has 2.0% CashBack with Abe's of Maine. Live has a little more CashBack.

B&H Link

Just be aware that if you are using livesearch to get the 2.5% CashBack you will lose it if you also use the LOYALTY10 coupon for $10 off. They will cancel your CashBack if you use any coupons. Best to stick to the 2% from fatwallet.

this is an awesome lens...i have it...and its super sharp

Add me to the list of a happy 50mm/1.8 owner.

Took gorgeous wedding pictures inside an underlit church.
It takes beautiful shots with buttery soft backgrounds!
And the focus is sharp!

wow it's a nice picture with great brokeh.

this one will meter but not focus with d40/60 - correct?

I like it, I have the Minolta version for my Sony A100. But some people dislike the hexagonal bokeh resulting from the hexagon shape of the aperture blades.

Personally, I like the bokeh if it's smooth, circle, or hexagon. So long as it's not doughnuts I like it

Great price, green for you OP

correct. The D40/D60 autofocus version is about $300 more.

The coupon was mentioned in this Thread a couple of weeks ago.
I ordered the 50 1.8 then for my D80 and it is an excellent lens. I recommend getting this lens and a couple other prime lenses such as a 24 2.8 and a 85 1.8 and then leave your zooms to collect dust for a while.
I only use a zoom if I am outdoors and I can't be bothered to carry extra equipment.

This lens will autofocus on your camera, we who bought D40s saved $400 but now lose a feature that would otherwise make this an excellent lens. In fact if I were to buy this lens and some other non AF-S lens I would certainly wish I had bought a D90 or D200 to be able to take advantage. Yes I would have paid more but not an amount exceeding the difference between the lower AF lens and the AF-S versions. Better body helps lesser lens.

FYI, Amazon is $10 more, but they are offering a free Tiffen UV filter with purchase...

so how good would this lens be for macro shots?

allenlh said: FYI, Amazon is $10 more, but they are offering a free Tiffen UV filter with purchase...

I have the lens in my Amazon cart but I don't see where the free filter comes in to play.

ozziegn said: allenlh said: FYI, Amazon is $10 more, but they are offering a free Tiffen UV filter with purchase...

I have the lens in my Amazon cart but I don't see where the free filter comes in to play.

on the product page itself:
"Shop now and get a free 52mm Tiffen UV Protection Filter, or $6.99 towards a more expensive filter, with the purchase of a qualifying lens from Amazon.com. Simply add both products to your cart, and we'll apply the discount at checkout. Offer valid through January 31, 2009. Applies only to purchases of products sold by Amazon.com, and does not apply to products sold by third-party merchants and other sellers through the Amazon.com site."

I have one of these filters and they're crap. Don't waste your $ putting cheap filters in front of your lens.

^ thanks for the info. I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon even though the lens is $10 more than Abes. I will get the lens in 2 days (thanks to Amazon Prime) and I won't have to worry about any possible shady problems with Abes.

I got my D80 body in Dec 08 for $420 after CashBack which is just a little more than a D40/60. D80's are still available for around $500. D90's are around $900. The stock lens that comes with a D40/60 is a cheap lens with a plastic mount.

My advice would be to get a D80 body with a 50mm 1.8 and buy a couple of other good lenses later.

If I had more money I would have purchased a D200. It is able to use old AI and AIS lenses and meter with them. The D80 can accept AIS but no metering.

I bought my D80 body and lens (18-135mm) kit from a friend who was anxious to get into a D90. He bought the D80 new and hadn't used it much, kept all the packaging and documents, and he had treated the equipment very well. He sold it to me for $550 including a Quantaray zoom lens that I offloaded on eBay for $65. I bought the 50mm lens almost immadiately after I bought the D80; it was suggested to me by a friend. The D80 is my first SLR of any sort, and I will be the first to admit that it's far more camera than I need, and I kind of don't know what I'm doing... so keep that in mind when reading my opinions.

I wouldn't advise the 50mm as a first and only lens because I think it would be frustrating not to have the zoom ability. Most of my pictures are outdoors, and I walk around most of the time with the 18-135mm lens on my camera. It's just convenient for me (although I do wish it was faster). If I'm indoors or the light is bad, I will certainly reach for my 50mm, and I think that it's an amazing lens (especially for $100)!

I'll also admit that I have the Tiffen UV Protection filters on both of my lenses. It's cheap ($7) insurance... and I wasn't aware that they're crap. I can honestly say that I haven't noticed that they're crap, and I suppose I'll leave them on my lenses until I figure out the difference.

I'll offer a few examples of pictures I took last month while on vacation. The first 5 pics were taken outdoors with the D80 and the 18-135mm lens. The last picture was taken indoors, at night, under poor lighting with the 50mm lens. As I said, the Tiffen filters were on both lenses. I reduced the image sizes so people won't need to wait all day to see the pics. Web link

Dead, OOS

yeah the only downside of having the d40. I'm tempted to buy the D90. really the price difference in getting a 50mm lens can almost land me a d90.

it's $128.90 already.

motogon said: it's $128.90 already.
...and on backorder.

It's still available from B&H and Adorama for $109 w/free shipping.

I have an 50 1.8 that came with my 6006 film camera (about 18 years ago). How much different is my lens from this lens (I have D70)

If you used your lens on a 6006 I am guessing that it is an Auto Focus lens? If so, it is likely this one. It should work just fine on your D70. The only real difference between your lens and the 50mm f/1.8D in this deal is the lack of the "D" feature. This feature feeds the focus distance back to the camera to help with the flash metering feature.

You can find another page here that will list the capabilities of the various versions of Nikon F Mount lenses and what Nikon bodies support them.

That's the one I have. I guess I'll just keep it and not get the "D" version.

My order is showing "sent to warehouse" and Abes has reported $1.98 CashBack to Fatwallet. I hope it actually ships (now that it is out of stock and the price is increased). Then I need to stop reading these threads around here... so I do not buy yet another lens!

I just got an email stating my order is backordered. I have to option to cancel.
I opt not to. I ask them when they will get another shipment in. Was hoping to have this lense for my baby boy's birth any day now.

Just tell her to wait until the lens arrives...

I got this lens from J&R knowing full well it wouldn't auto focus with my D40.

After a days of trying it out, when in focus pictures are sharp. Problem is I have a hard time getting the exact focus (even using focus light indicator on viewfinder).

I'm debating returning/selling this lens and getting either the 50mm 1.4 AFS ($400) or saving that money and upgrading body to D80 or D90...Problem is I like the smaller size of the D40. It makes a great carry-round camera. I just wish it wasn't crippled with no auto focus on non-AFS lens. Considering the price differences of AF and AFS lenses, it may be worth the body upgrade now.

I also received the "backorder" email yesterday... and then today... I received a tracking number. Woo Hoo! It should be here on Friday.

No point buying the f/1.4 version in your situation. You're going to have the same autofocus problem with that lens as well. All the legacy glass will not AF on the D40.

The new 50mm 1.4 WILL auto focus on the d40/d60 bodies. Great samples all over the net thus far.

$100 is a "deal" for a 50mm f/1.8? I didn't know Nikon lenses were this expensive! Canon's 50mm f/1.8 usually sells for $80-90...and that's after they jacked up prices (before one could be found for less than $70).

crxvtec said: The new 50mm 1.4 WILL auto focus on the d40/d60 bodies. Great samples all over the net thus far.

According to www.slrgear.com, the new 1.4G lens isn't as sharp as the older 1.4D lens. Here's a quote: "Optically, the 50mm ƒ/1.4 AF-D is sharper at all apertures, including the critical ƒ/1.4."

Also, their comparison to the f/1.8 is:
"The 50mm ƒ/1.8 is comparable to the new 50mm ƒ/1.4G in terms of sharpness - the results are neck and neck, though again, we have only tested the 50mm ƒ/1.8 on the D200. The 50mm ƒ/1.8 shows slightly more CA, corner shading is about the same, but the 50mm ƒ/1.8 has virtually no distortion."

Depends on how old the 50mm is If you get it new you can get it between $90-100. Since the explosion of dslrs though, I think the 50mm has gained popularity and thus the inflated pricing (although not by a whole lot). To my understanding, it's commonly understood that [new] 50mms, whether Nikon or Canon, sell for close to $100.

How about the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor (although I don't think it's out yet). It's estimated that it will retail for about $200 when it comes out in march.

It puts you pretty close to 50mm equivalent on the DX format. The benefit of the extra stop between 1.4 and 1.8 and the huge price difference isn't worth it considering you only have a d40/d40x/d60 body. It's a better match for the d40/d40x/d60 than the new 50mm AF-S.

ozziegn said: so how good would this lens be for macro shots?
It doesn't do macro shots (or in nikon's case... micro)... at least not by itself. But you can always use extension tubes/reverse rings/etc.

FYI, I just got an email this morning that this lens has been sent out to me, and I was billed $98 for it.
So, if you guys had requested that they sent it out when they get it, you might wanna check your email
