512 Ram
4GB SSD
Ubuntu
Black in color
LINK UPDATE

Pretty much striped down version with 512mb RAM 4GB SSD no camera Ubuntu.

Try Sams.com better version in colors for $249 Also has webcam and 8 GB

Ubuntu is an awesome operating system. My next computer I don't even want Windows on it, because Ubuntu has programs that are like Photoshop, Office and others for free, when Microsoft charges for these programs. It's also very stable.

$199 is a good deal. Thanks OP! Green.

Link to thread.

Does it have a PCI-E slot for you to install a SSD (outside of the preinstalled one)?

pretty good deal, especially if aftermarket pci-e ssd drives (that fit Dell mini 9) start coming down

Note you can (should) upgrade the single sodimm in this to 2gb for about $25, std pc2-5300 sodimm, regardless if you get this one or the Sams Club one...Dell's memory upgrade prices are a bit silly. For example, Corsair #VS2GSDS667D2 is $25 shipped from Newegg.

On the other hand, Dell provides a $150 upgrade to a 64gb ssd drive on this, hmmm

Ubuntu > WinXP Home for most of us that have experienced both

This is not a criticism of the deal, but I spent a few days playing around with a friend's Dell Mini 9 and I gotta say that they keyboard is way too small for me. I keep striking other keys instead of the one I intend to. My hands aren't even that big. I normally wear MED-sized gloves. I then bot the HP Mini 1010NR, much bigger keys and easier to type, however, the keys feel flimsy and cheap, not like its big brother HP Mini 2133.

Too bad, I would have preferred a polka dotted version.

As a spelling nazi myself, that made me LOL.

Maybe try it without the gloves.

Striped Gloves

Slightly better than the Outlet prices...especially since these are New.

Wow, I didn't know that Microsoft charges for Photoshop.

Guess what, you can get all those same programs free on Windows too.

Dell will let you upgrade this version to the 8 GB SSD for $36 and a .3 Pixel webcam for $15, and you don't have to be a member of Sam's Club or stripe the Windows XP polka dots off your machine either with your bare hands or gloves. Sure, you can get a lot of great open source programs like GIMP, openoffice, etc. for Windows, but you can't get Linux stability, security or speed on XP. Plus, Windows is such a pain to administer, you have to update Windows, your AV, etc. individually, with Ubuntu/Debian a single command updates every program on your computer.

The Mini 9 is very quiet (apparently it doesn't have a CPU fan), robust and easy to upgrade. I'm all over this like Oprah on a baked ham. 4GB is enough for the OS and I'll access my data off my server and when they are giving away 16-32 GB SSDs in boxes of Cracker Jacks in a year or two I'll upgrade so I can have more room for programs.

Besides, there is big difference between programs like photoshop/office and actual photoshop/office. However if you do not have to deal with official work, Ubuntu and all the opensource programs beats teh crap of MS windows OS. On a side not, these SSD drives connects via PCI-E/mini PCI-E slot? I thought they just use sata connector.

it uses pata signalling over mini pci-express connector. so its not really mini pci-e nor sata.

trust me go 16GB or more. you will regret any size smaller.

If you're talking about OOo and GIMP, yeah. But there are plenty of programs that are linux only that are great. Amarok comes to mind just off the top of my head.

any chance to run XP on this machine with 4GB ssd?

nlite with no swap and no hibernation and disk compression enabled.

as i said get the 16GB ssd option. much more fun.

Nice find OP.

500 MB is good enough for XP and even better for Ubuntu. 1 GB is unnecessary for most people. 2 GB is definitely overkill.

A true spelling Nazi wouldn't use the term "LOL".

Yes, get the full trial version then go to keygen.us. Then sanitize your pc...

I think I'd want to see one and try it out first, but there are these videos:
Dell overview on YouTube
another review
an unboxing
typing tests

In for one thanks...upgraded SSD to 32gig...I'll take the advice of getting ram somewhere else. I had a Dell Inspiron for a few years now ..great machine...just heavy..for the mostly surfing that I do I want to lighten my load when I am on the road.

is this the netbook with a glossy screen that gets washed out easily in bright sunlight?

omit

1 more time?

yes, no, yes, no

sorry, don't know what happened there

must have been that Y2K again

maybe you had pipe stuck in your loins? (sorry couldn't resist the play on your username)

Anyone have this and can comment on speed of rendering web pages, particularly those that use javascript (e.g. gmail/reader)? How about Flash video? Reviews I've seen are of preproduction machines.

Thanks.

The 16 GB SSD that comes with the Mini is faster than the 4 GB or 8 GB SSD. They are made by different manufacturers and the bigger one is faster.

Skipping 223 Messages...

HP keyboard is fantastic. Tried one at my local costco...however the overall build quality is quite poor compared to the Dell minis. The HP design is fragile and feels cheap which is pretty typical for netbooks. Dell has managed to make a netbook that feels more solid than most well built full size laptops (thinkpads). I sold my mini 9 in anticipation of the mini 10.
