As far as I know, these Black drives are faster than the Seagate. If you need a Black drive, this is the best price I have seen it at.

Stop, a black WD makes this seagate drive look foolish, just because it is cheaper does not mean its a better deal.

*Absolutely* Not. Pass on that drive. Run away.

Look at the reviews of it at Amazon. In general stay away from Seagate until they sort out tech issues.

This is great. I had bought this two days ago - so I called Newegg and they matched the price. I just saved $10 for reading this board.

green and surprised it took this long to make it on the boards it came out in the news letter yesterday I think

So this one runs faster because it's a Black drive?

You gotta love WD's marketing department.

Yes, it did. I was surprised as well. So I finally posted it.

I am sure theres some marketing to it but before you attribute the reason to anything you make up, it will be good to read about these drives and the comparisons to other drives in its class.

See how the first letter in "Black" is capitalized? That distinguishes itself from the common color name "black".

They have used the name "Black" as a tradename, they're not describing the color of the drive. Don't feel bad though, they probably didn't do it to confuse morons - that's just a bonus.....

I suspect that WD's marketing department has cleverly capitalized (no pun intended) on their "Caviar" tradename (again, note that "Caviar" is capitalized, distinguishing itself from roe, or 'fish eggs'...)

personally speaking, i've never experienced any issues with my 3 Barracudas; mind you i use them as secondary/backup drives, so i don't know if the majority of those who had problems used them as their primary that was constantly being accessed.

regardless, whether you buy WD or Seagate -- if you keep a backup, you don't have to worry about it.

Amazon has it for $ 105.89 for those in CA with 9.75 tax ( 10.75 in July )

Linky !

This is ridiculous talk. You mean that I won't end up with a large fish if I bought a Seagate Barracuda?

Why do you think WD drives die when coupled with a Seagate in a Raid system? Its all in the name...

And I paid $153 plus tax at Bestbuy over the weekend. Got one of these and the BB drive is going back.

Keep in mind that what you got from BB was a retail version. This one is OEM. That simply means you will need the SATA cable/screws.

If you plan on using this as a system/main os drive, I'd pay the extra to get the Caviar Black.

If you need more media storage, backup storage, external storage, I'd get the Seagate. Or whatever is the cheapest mb/$. The performance gain from the WD is negligible for these purposes.

I bought 4 of the 7200.11 1.5tb drives from Dell when they had that crazy $80 sale. I knew of their potential issues and all the fear mongering surrounding them ahead of time. They all came with updated firmware and they work fine.

Thanks OP! I just bought one. Been waiting a while for the Caviar Blacks to go on sale.

Thanks OP, in for one also. Needed a new hard drive for an HTPC, so quiet and fast takes priority over cheap.

Thanks OP! In for 2 for my NAS!

True! Newegg definitely got to move out of CA.

I am surprised that Newegg is in CA. Given that a good bunch of its customers are in CA, it would have been prudent to be in TN only and increase its customer base by giving the tax benefit. I am guessing most of its customers in CA must be business who dont pay any tax on stuff they buy.

Actually, businesses are only tax exempt if they are purchasing for resale. If you're reselling stuff as a business, you're probably buying direct from the manufacturer or a distro center, not Newegg. I know this because we buy stuff from Newegg for our business.

CA tax rate is a killer for sure. It just got bumped up to 9.25% for my county. It's going to 10.25% in July. I bought a ton of stuff from Newegg but now I'm actively looking for Amazon deals since it's tax exempt for me. We'll continue to buy from the Egg if it's a great deal or we need it fast. We receive everything the day after we order it since they're about a 30 minute drive away. I'll hold off on a lot of impulse buys or stuff I don't need right away while I hope/wait for a similar deal from Amazon.

Thanks OP. Once you go Black....

I didnt know this. Thanks.

I figured that was the main reason. However I receive most of my stuff from Newegg in a day or two as well even though I am in SoutEast PA. Because they ship from NJ. Sometimes I get it next day. I do like Newegg in general.

I wish Newegg would close their CA office and operate only in NJ. I would gladly take 2-3 day delivery and no state tax.

Seconded. CA sales tax kills

I think UPS ground takes longer than that for cross country shipping. I ordered something from ewiz and estimated arrival date is 7 days from sunnyvale,ca to nyc

PCConnection had this a couple of days ago for $98 without CA tax and free ship, but it's $109 now. If you can wait...

You know I don't mind them being in cali at all. Just keep them away from florida. And almost everything i wind up buying from them gets shipped free 3 day and comes on time.

I got this drive at the afternoon and receive it next day. The drive run faster than the green version. However, they way they packed it make me worry about the HD.

Got it yesterday, sweet drive. Came in a box with peanuts and the drive was simply taped in a bubble wrap. Mine shipped from NJ. So it does seem they have a warehouse somewhere in NJ.

Another plus point was that this drive has a 5 yr warranty.

lol! I don't think anyone here actually realized that was a joke.

What kind of cable do I need to get for this? A SATA I or SATA II cable?

The Black is marginally faster than the 7200.11 Seagate 1TB, the 7200.11 Seagate 1.5TB owns it.

The Black is about par with the Samsung F1.

The Black gets owned by this drive ZZF: Hitachi 1TB 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA $76.23 FS, AR, MSLC

I have been running a Hitachi 180GXP 180GB (3 Platter) drive for 7+ years no problems.
