enjoy.

Good until June 1st 2010

Edit:
My intention of posting this thread, originally on the free stuff forum, was neither to start a flame-war between the OS factions nor to praise/berate Microsoft. I just want to announce the availability of highly coveted piece of beta (??) software. I am a UNIX guy at heart but I also am a realist to understand that, despite what my preferences are, the other people of this world is using and are going to to use the Redmond's finest piece of work in droves, throughout my lifetime. It is best to adapt by knowing it, rather than total rejection due to what it might represent. If you have any issues with the OS, I am sure there are technical forums where these issues are more openly discussed. But I believe FW is neither place nor the platform for those discussions. If you like the deal, great. Enjoy ! If not, move on. Life is too short to to waste on mundane things like which OS is better.

any free testers/volunteer?

i have been runnign the beta for over 6 months now on an OLD machine and it runs lightning fast and have not had any problems. great OS if you have an extra machine you should try it!

It really expires in march when you pay attention to Microsoft's BS tactics:

Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you値l need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You値l also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.

i guess it is pretty BS that I only get a free OS for almost a year, not over a year.

(/Sarcasm btw)

Seriously? what do you expect? MS (or any other company) is not going to give out unlimited free copies of a virtually complete, fully functional release candidate for their newest OS. How's that BS?

What's really BS about it is they shut down your PC every two hours. Powering your hard drives on/off like that is the worst abuse you can do to them.

Some of us may also want this: LINK Certain Intel processors need not apply, . LINK

Of course, I could be more specific but I am busy watching Da Vinci Code right now. What a bunch of crap. Another propaganda piece promoting the (Perfect) Parasite(s).

Then don't install it!

For those don't like the expiration date, just shut !@#$ off and don't download and install. It saves you and reader of this thread tons of time.

For those who want to try, i've installed this RC already through MSDN. I love it, especially those new wallpapers.

thanks o.p.!!

Looks like we can't install on VirtualPC or VMWare?

Oh, how terrible that Microsoft (oh wait, I mean Micro$oft lolololol) wants you to actually purchase their product.

I like the "your PC will begin shutting down every two hours" part.

um yeah but this has been available for over a week now (RC1 AKA build 7100) and technically this should be in free deals

why the red...

i understand microsoft is protecting their software...they can fine people or hold them accountable if they keep using the OS after the dateline..but interfering with the computer is clearly a violation or privacy and many other basic rights...

if they manage to shut down the system every 2 hours...microsoft is doing other untold things in the system..

Are you going to post all your torrents on here because they are "free"?

seriously why do we have to pay for an OS to begin with

it should be free...we pay for the computer and internet its more than enough...search engine is free email is free etc etc..

its time for OS to be free...

Don't be a jerk. It's right there.

how about just taking a rest every 2 hours..while the system shuts down

The RC1 is a FREE DL from M$ hence why it should be in free deals not because it is available in .torrent form.

There are free operating systems.

Seriously why do we have to pay for electricity? I paid for the house, I pay taxes and insurance for it. And why should I pay for gas, I paid for the car... I should get something free.

And as stated above you CAN get free ones. Have been able to for awhile.... and also as stated a few times it WARNS you that it will shut down your system. Like when you buy a computer and get a free trial of anything. Does not shut down your system, but it can be programed. Does not mean they are hacking into your computer. If you do not want it to reboot, uninstall.

Thanks for the post OP, wanted to try this out.

Uh, maybe because it was released to technet and MSDN subscribers last week? And it was free then too? Not sure what you're trying to get at.

Basically Vista SP2, so tempting...

I knew there was a reason I had insomnia tonight.

I wound up getting 3 product keys before it decided to start d/l'ing the 32 bit version. The d/l size is 2.36 GB for the 32bit and I'm at 7%. Woohoo. Looks like a 3 hour d/l with my 1.5 Kbps connection.).

I hope the servers don't tank.

Thanks-will try.
Also please note that windows virtual pc (for xp only apps/hardware) will be available for download starting TODAY may 5th.
Virtual PC

there are a ton of free OS' out there
no one is making u pay for it
ur computer is not a necessity either, don't want to pay? sell it
u are free to use them; u can use this one for free to experience it, and if u like it, purchase it
if not, can it

I just tried to download it.

Did they kill the "Martial Law" User Account Control security setup like vista had? Is 7 still like a big bully dad controlling every thing that happens like Vista is? is FAX put back in? Does it contain more DRM or trusted computing? Is MS ready to let users decide what they want and don't want in the OS and how it operates?

I hold little faith unless 7 is closer to XP than Vista and doesn't cost Hundreds more just for them to keep their paws off.

When March 1, 2010 comes, just go into your bios and change the year back one and party like its 2009 again.

Is this any different than what's posted on MSDN?

The UAC is completely tamed in W7. A major improvement. Now it is mostly activated ONLY when the administrative action is performed by a non-user action, such as by a piece of software or other such event.

It's also significantly quicker than Vista, and lots of things in it, like the redesigned task bar, are a welcome change. To be honest, it makes Vista look like the drunk Uncle who asks the kids for money or offers them cigarettes every time he comes round.

Hmmm sorry I have to disagree, I think it's makes Vista look more like the Aunt who comes over and always wants to kiss you and has a slight cabbage like smell to her breath.

I haven't had a chance to install the RC but the beta works fine in VMWare on a Mac. The official VMWare Fusion Blog has some install tips for the RC on Fusion so I assume it will work just fine in virtualization too.

Nope. This is the same exact build, just released a few days later.

Anyone know what the release date is for Windows 7 and what the price will be? Thanks!

I agree that the offer does effectively expire on March 1, 2010, but I hardly see that as a blaring con.

Is it so terrible that you're still able to use the OS sporadically afterwards to maybe check your settings or create some backups before you decide to make the official upgrade or not? Would you rather the OS just cut out immediately?

Also, like other people have said, I think almost a year of free usage is as much as one could expect, so who cares if the "fine print" (aka BOLD print) says that you can only effectively use the product for 3 months less than first stated.

Thanks OP, nice post.

Skipping 348 Messages...

great post for a freebie. however, its called "Microsoft Windows 7 90-Day Eval VHD ". Since I hate trials, I will pass on it.

besides, since righthere says MS has no plans to fix it FOR THE Release Candidate, ill stick with my "trusty" vista

from the getgo i preferred only the full version, so this windows 7 rc isnt good enough to replace vista for me...yet
