For read purposes, yes, but you may not be able to burn with it. In which case you'll have to run Patchburn and that might not do the trick either.

I'd get this if there were any laptop dvd burners worthwhile, the one on my laptop is so shoddy, I probably only burnt like 50 dvd-rs and now I can't manage a burn speed over .5x, read speed is even slower. I am up to burning 400 dvds on my desktop dvd burner no problem or slowdowns yet.

Yep, bought it for mine and works fine. Drivers install automatically... no software needed.

good deal

Be aware that this unit requires 2 USB plugs since it doesn't have an external power supply. This doesn't work well with my Lenovo S10 since it doesn't have 2 USB jacks next to each other.

In his recommendation of this drive, Jason Dunn recommends a USB extension for those with USB ports on opposite sides of the machine, so you might want to include one in your order or hit Monoprice.

Great price. These things are typically stupid expensive if you need one.

I've got an 8X burner in a notebook I have right now. It won't burn to 16x discs, not even the 1-16X discs. 8X are increasingly hard to find if not downright impossible.

It's certainly a great price, but is my 8x burner at present the problem, or will I run into the same thing with this drive as well? Thanks for any advice. I'm waiting on a Asus 10" notebook and am interested in a separate drive that I can travel with.

to buy or not to buy... very tempting. But usually after I buy, the price will further drop... just my luck!

3FXC said:As far as power requirements, do these USB slim burners (without a brick) work without an issue as the slim ones that use a power adapter? I know it is nice not to have the brick but if the USB power is not enough for a certain case, then that could be a problem. (There used to be this problem with some USB powered external HD)
I own an LG slim DVD burner, as it was the best deal I could find at the time. It works fantastic bus powered, but as mine is also a Lightscribe drive, I do have to plug in the included power brick when burning graphics on the Lightscribe side of the disc. My understanding is that you may also get faster burn speeds when using the power brick, but I've not had the opportunity to test that out yet.

It works fabulously on my ASUS 1000HE, as it has 2 USB ports next to each other on one side of the unit, and a third USB port on the other side of the unit.

If you have an old/broken/unused laptop with an internal dvd drive, you can also buy an external dvd enclosure to re-use that dvd drive by converting it to a portable external dvd drive. Search around (or on eBay) for "slim enclosure".

Mine runs fine off of 1 Lenovo S10 USB port

Have you tried burning a disc using only 1 USB port? I'm just curious if there is enough power for that, or if burning is where the need for the extra USB power comes into play.

Probably not, i think you need the apple super drive
unless there's some workaround that i'm unaware of.

0AfterRebates said:You don't need this if you have another computer with a DVD drive. Just connect to your main computers drives over a network.

You need it if you want to boot your netbook from a dvd, like to install windows 7 (which btw, rocks on a netbook)
unless there's some workaround that i'm unaware of.

just run the iso off daemon or something. Considering the netbook has no optical drive, putting a virtual drive on it was one of the first things i did with mine. if you got win 7 ur prolly dling it from torrent neways.

BTW I want to install win 7 on my mini 10 but i was wondering is the Dell dock compatable? kind of gotten attached to it.

Wow, I've been on the fence about getting this for my Mini9 for some time. The best I could find was $69.99 w/5% Live CashBack plus tax and shipping. Glad I waited. $54.11 shipped. Awsome deal. Oh, and yes, I already have external DVD writers, but I want this for the portability.
