BestBuy.com to presell Windows 7 upgrades starting 6/26, starting at $49.99 Engadget has what it says is a leaked internal memo that says Best Buy will be "preselling" Windows 7 upgrades between June 26th and July 11th on bestbuy.com
I woud wate, don't buy a Laptop or deastop tell after June 26th you will get Windows 7 upgrade for free. Best Buy may be the first but every one will follow in a day or two. But Your upgrade will not work intell mid Oct.
Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade: $49.99 Windows 7 Professional upgrade: $99.99
To ship in late October when Windows 7 is released.
These 'presell' prices are quite a bit lower than what Windows Vista and XP retail upgrades cost... and, AFAIK, snowballs still melt in hell, and pigs are still bound to the ground, so I cannot imagine Microsoft actually lowering their MSRP's that much. Last I heard, Windows 7 retail pricing was to be the same as Vista.... but no lower-cost "Basic" version, so home users will have to buy the more expensive "Home Premium" edition.
Note: the memo reads as though other retailers might also be doing something similar; but dunno who or if prices would be the same.
Additionally, the memo confirms Best Buy's participation in the 'free' upgrade option when purchasing a new Vista-powered PC; but also that free upgrades will be available to those who purchase Vista separately from them as well (both during the period of 6/26 to Windows 7 general availability in October)

I assume you have to buy it from a reputable pc place. WRONG, as is clearly stated in the title of this thread, you can buy it at BestBuy.

If you can buy it at BestBuy, show me the link to it at BestBuy.com

sort of off topic, but does anyone know if microsoft is going to have another promotion like the powertogether one? prob not, but it was nice getting vista and office for like $12
Anyone tell me in simple terms why Winders 7 is going to be better than XP or Vista? Did they add fax back in all versions? More trusted computing & DRM as mandated by MPAAFIA,RIAAFA or are they finally serving the buyer base they created the products for?, Did they delete the "MS knows best" security user account control, Did they restore the easy to add desktop custom toolbars, speedy performance, Easy changeable Custom Themes, Did they stop trying to be security provider, mommy, cop, etc...all in one?
FrugalFreak said: anyone tell me in simple terms why Windows is better than XP or Vista? did the add fax back?To me, the best fax application with answering mashine was talk works 3.0 by symantec. The build in fax in Vista as well as in Windows are both crap. I can not learn how to send a fax in them and no voice support.

This is very poorly written, to the extent that they actually lie (I think accidentally):
there's nothing complicated about the final results, which showed that "any illusions about Windows 7 somehow being leaner or more efficient than Vista can now be thrown out the window." Sure, there was some speedup -- 7 was 60 percent faster than Vista during the dual-core workflow tests -- but overall, 7's just slower on dual- and quad-core hardware than XP. W7 is faster than Vista, as is demonstrated in the analysis they link at the end of the article.
As for XP, I agree with you. I'll keep using it as long as possible.

W7 is nice but I'll probably stick with xp so my printer, scanner and tv recorder still work.
I recall <$100 prices for vista Ultimate Upgrades around the time of launch. Then later CompUSA had them for ~$100 again when vista sp1 install discs came out and they were trying to shift the Ultimate (non sp1) Signature edition upgrade boxes.

Simple math; Winders 7 + new needed PC hardware = $$$$$$ for MS & Manufacturers. It means YOU LOSE!
TPM is not solely used for DRM. Its a multipurpose tool used in security and encryption.
UAC is a GOOD THING for the 90% of average-joe users. Yes, it’s a change and can be annoyance to an experienced user, but it takes all of 10 seconds to disable if desired.
Also, your benchmarking article is from January, which could very likely be outdated.

Actually I guess it depends on what you mean my support. My understanding is that security patches and other critical updates will be released until April 2014 (http://keznews.com/4375_Microsoft__June_30_not_end_of_Windows_XP_support). This is just one link that says the same. So sure you might not get IE10 on you XP box but you should have no problem to continue using it securely for some time to come.
Microsoft is so dang stupid. If they made the FULL version of Windows 7 $99, I bet they would make a TON more than @ $250 or whatever vista costs. And I can say that because I've NEVER paid for a copy of ANY windows version, not even with a new PC(I build all mine), and I'd buy windows 7 @ $99. That's gotta say something.

It's damn hot here in Houston. We have to close windows all the time. That's why it's expensive.

I have been running windoze 7 for about a month now. I like it overall but have a couple of issues that I hope will be resolved in the final release.
1. my clock seems to always be off by about 10 mins. Sometimes it is right and then I look down at it later on and its off by 10 mins.
2. the windows video player doesn't seem to work well for me.
3. on 1 out of 5 boots for me the network adapter isn't enabled.
I remember when XP came out, there were so many great deals. I ended up with a burner, scanner, and a bunch of other freebies from office max.

Is Best Buy really reputable? I don't think we can trust them!

From my experience so far with 7RC1 I have one very suprising thing to say. The hardware support is better, easier, and quicker than even XP. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get my webcam and hdwonder working on XP, on vista, I had to right click and press "fix". Then wait 3 minutes. I almost fell out of my chair with suprise.

Hey,
Microsoft has already announced 4 months back that they will make upgrades free for vista machines brought after July 1 2009. If at all, Dell, HP can choose to price at their will for the upgrades. Also Windows 7 is much better than Vista, and works with most other hardware. It has won rave reviews and also includes a xp mode for softwares that work only with xp.

I'm running Win7 build 7100 on my old Evo n620C with 1GB RAM and it is running better than it did with XP. Win7 found all the hardware including my old Wireless LAN card sitting on top (not the W200). I don't have the trackpad virtual vertical/horizontal scroll, but I'm guessing the WinXP Synaptics driver would take care of that if I installed it. I'm also seeing some sleep/hibernation issues that need to be worked out. I agree that the hardware support is much improved and to me the performance difference is worth the upgrade. Win7 seems to require less CPU resources (maybe due to fewer memory leaks?), and the fan doesn't seem to run as much as it did with WinXP. I think Win7 will give new life to my older hardware, so I may not have to rush out and buy a new laptop in July like I planned to.

You probably already know for your PC to run XP Mode in Windows 7, the CPU has to support Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V), and this support has to be enabled in the BIOS. Most AMD CPUs (except Sempron) support the AMD-V or XP mode, but not all Intel CPUs support it. desktop CPUs with Intel VT mobile CPUs with Intel VT
I might would buy windows 7 if MS would refund the cost of my crapware Vista or include a discount for ALL vista users.

glad they made the pricing more affordable this time around...i think windows 7 might finally be worth the upgrade from windows XP as long as everything is compatible (crossing fingers)...thanks op!

I believe 512 ram is the minimum. It "Looks" similar to vista but behaves a bit snappier. I really like it and I work in the [computer industry] According to Microsoft, 1 GB of RAM is the minimum for 32-bit Win7, with 2 GB RAM minimum for 64-bit.
