Ever see a picture of Bill's house?....it's expensive
to operate a property like that.

Besides, why buy it before we see if they bring back
the "Power Together" offer like they did for Vista
where we got the full business version for just
watching some videos.

Thanks Elric
Some of the basic requirements came back:
16gb of Hard Drive free space to install 32-bit windows 7
CPU 1ghz minimum requirement
1gb Ram requirement
Windows Aero Capable
----------------------------------------------------
Otherwise I think you can only upgrade to windows 7 basic which
doesn't seem worth while to upgrade from XP. I believe all pentium 4s don't
meet these requirements.

Those are the minimum requirements for all Windows 7 Editions, at least as of right now.

However, some people have reported running it on lesser hardware, like 512MB or even 256MB of RAM:

I believe all pentium 4s don't meet these requirements.
All Pentium 4s were 1.3Ghz or higher, so they meet the CPU minimum requirement.

I was referring to that all the P4'S I happen to come across have a max of 512ram. I also am just going by what the results of the test said were the minimum requirements as listed from Microsoft to run 7 Premium. Basic doesn't look worthwhile enough to upgrade to. Only listing this as a courtesy in case anyone else was in need of the same info.

At my work we have P4 machines with 1GB of RAM, and I'm not sure if that's the max that they can take.

No.

Information Week article from a year ago

Retail packages will be gone at the end of the month, but support will continue through 2014. Mostly aimed at large business customers, but the updates will be available to everyone. Don't worry. In fact, people glomming onto this should ask themselves, "Why do so many businesses still run XP?" The only way I'd consider Windows 7 is if I had Vista, which I don't. XP forever, baby.

Hmmmph, so unless you have a Windows XP OEM "downgrade" with a Vista COA as well, upgrade XP to 7 isn't possible. Did I read that right?
In addition Vista Basic can't be upgraded.

Yes, you need a PC purchased after June 26 that came with a Vista Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate license.

In addition Vista Basic can't be upgraded.
Windows 7 Home Basic won't be available in the US, so no upgrade to it will be available.

Note that the Best Buy memo mentioned that the retail boxes of Vista purchased after June 26 will also be eligible for the free upgrade, so if you have Vista Home Basic now, you could by an upgrade to Vista Home Premium and get a free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium.

That's strange. You should have the v/h scroll. I did I clean install on Win7 and it installed the Synaptic driver (and software) not a generic mouse driver.

I am not sure where you got your bogus info but Windows 7 Basic 32-bit and Windows Starter 32-bit editions WILL certainly be available in the US for OEM distribution. Both are ALREADY SKUed up for ordering on Microsoft’s OEM System Builder website for US customers. According to the Microsoft Windows roadmap for US OEM customers Windows 7 Basic 32-bit replaces Vista Home Basic 32-bit and Windows 7 Starter Edition 32-Bit replaces XP SP3 for netbooks and other devices using low voltage CPUs like the ATOM, or NEO processors.

With some exceptions, there haven't been massive upgrades in notebooks for a couple of years since Core 2 Duo was released. I refuse to buy another laptop until there are 4 or more processors. I also won't buy from any maker that doesn't offer matte screens on a 17" notebook (only Apple does).

On my MacBook I run Windows 7 and Mac OSx. In MacOSx I use VMWare Fusion to run XP Pro for my work applications. I don't see any reason to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP, but it's a no-brainer from Vista.

Under Vista it is possible to perform a clean install using upgrade media by installing the upgrade initially with no product key and then installing it a second time with the Vista product key entered.* I wonder if a Windows 7 upgrade will allow the same process. Tech ARP's reporting says that a Vista product key ("registration code in the Vista COA") will be required to do a clean install of the 7 upgrade. That doesn't make a lot of sense given that the Windows 7 retail upgrade license will support an upgrade from XP with a clean install. I highly doubt that Microsoft is going to press two different versions of upgrade media, one for Vista OEM -> Windows 7 that requires a Vista key to use and one for retail distribution that allows either a Vista or XP key. I suspect it will be like the Windows Vista upgrade and not require a key at all.

*A valid Windows XP license is required to fulfill the Vista upgrade licensing agreement.

Yes, I would have v/h scroll if I installed the Synaptics driver. I'm running a default Win7 install with Office 2003 on my 1.3GHZ Pentium M N620c and everything runs great. I wanted to stay with the default install for now. The N620c runs a whole lot better on Win7 than WinXP and it seems to run cooler too.

From here:
http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=619&pgno=5
Windows 7 Home Basic will be available only in Emerging Markets.

It's linked to from the Windows 7 Roadmap:
http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=599&pgno=0#sku

Also, from the Upgrade FAQ:
http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=609&pgno=10
Q: Why has Vista Home Basic been left off the eligible upgrade path?
A: The major lesson learned from the last Windows Upgrade Program was "Keep the Program Simple". Thus, there is one set of Program Details world-wide. Only Like-to-Like Upgrades are supported under the Program. Therefore, Windows Home Basic is not in scope for this program as there is no "like" version of Windows 7 in mature markets. Additionally, not all Windows Home Basic PCs meet the Windows 7 Hardware requirements, whereas all Logo-qualifying versions of Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Ultimate WILL meet the Windows 7 hardware requirements.

there are core2quad laptops from several manufacturers, and you can put a matte screen on just about any laptop... that apple 17" screen isn't a true matte, it's a foil(?) shell over a glossy screen... don't swallow the applespeak.

windows7 is Leaps and Bounds above xp, it's a worthy upgrade.

Is this -confirmed- with regards to Best Buy? The local staff have heard the rumor, but don't know. I want to get a unit at the clearance price, but with the option to freely upgrade to 7, and there is a week or two gap in that.

Is it -confirmed- that this is what Best Buy -will- do? Does someone have a scan of the ad for the coming week?

It hasn't been confirmed by Best Buy, no. No retailer or OEM can promote it until June 26, so it's not in next week's BB ad:
