Yes.

Looks like XP's life has been extended a bit further:

It will seem silly to run XP on a 8-core with 16gigs in 2011.

Hardware is already available today to maximize windows7's multiprocessor prowess. The current intel core i7 processors are quadcore with hyperthreading - essentially functions as an 8 core processor.

I like it overall but have a couple of issues that I hope will be resolved in the final release.

1. my clock seems to always be off by about 10 mins. Sometimes it is right and then I look down at it later on and its off by 10 mins.

Try changing the Internet time update interval. The default is to update once a week, but many PCs don't keep accurate time for that long.

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services W32Time TimeProviders NtpClient
3. Double-click the SpecialPollInterval value, and change the Base of the Value data to Decimal
4. Change the Value data to the time interval you desire, noting that the time is given in seconds. For 1 day the value would be 86400, while the default (7 days) is 604800. I have mine set for 21600 -- that's every 6 hours.
5. Close the registry editor

Don't set your interval any faster than every several hours, because if the server thinks you're hitting it too often, it might ban your IP address.

A good list of time servers is at http://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi

Except most people can't afford the cost of the 8-cores.

Didn't M$ have a free download of Windows Beta 7?

Yes. But time limited.

I'd just wait for a new computer with W7 on it.

MS did offer a free Windows 7 beta public release, which is due to expire in August '08. They're currently offering a free download of the Windows 7 Release Candidate, which will effectively expire in March 2009.

At my work we have P4 machines with 1GB of RAM, and I'm not sure if that's the max that they can take.

We've got an office full of P4's here running between 1gb and 2gb of RAM. I'm not sure if they made P4 mobos that supported over 2gb, but 1gb is extremely common and 2gb isn't unheard of. I even upgraded my old P4 laptop to 2gb.

Here WIN & RC Free I found the following...

You don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.....(MORE)....

Get the download
The 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 RC are available in five languages: English, German, Japanese, French, and Spanish. Just choose the version that fits the system you'll be using, pick your language, and click go to register for and download the RC.

Downloading the Windows 7 RC could take a few hours. The exact time will depend on your internet provider, bandwidth, and traffic. The good news is that once you start the download, you won't have to answer any more questions – you can walk away while it finishes. If it gets interrupted, it'll restart where it left off. See this FAQ for details.

Download 32-bit version
Select language English German Japanese Spanish French
Download 64-bit version
Select language English German Japanese Spanish French IT pro? Go here to get your download and the resources you need.
32-bit, 64-bit? Once relatively rare, today's more powerful PCs often use 64-bit versions of Windows. If you're not sure what to download, just match the version you're currently running. Here's how to check.

Get a Product Key
Just need a Product Key? It's easy to get. If you've already downloaded the RC or have an installation disc, start the download process above by selecting your version and language. You'll be asked to enter your Windows Live ID, and to answer a few registration questions. Then you'll see the product key you can use to activate the RC, and you won't need to go through the download process again.

Information about Windows 7 is preliminary and subject to change. Some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware. The features and functionality you find in the pre-release product may not appear in the final version of Windows 7. If we change the software before it's released, we'll change this information accordingly. We're not making express or implied warranties with this information.

New hardware+New OS=you lose now?

So if you have a pentium 2, and you take that against my machine:

Core i7
1.65 tb hdd
4 gigs ddr3
gtx 260
40" lcd 1080p samsung

Which can play Crysis perfectly, while yours couldn't even run linux well, who exactly wins and who loses here?

You try to make it sound like Microsoft forces you to buy new hardware. Some of us buy new hardware because we LIKE more power.

It is just my opinion that update of OS should not mandate hardware updates every OS release to run reliable. that market seems to be that case since it generates more income. I'm running AMD Turion x64/3gb ddr BTW. It is just my opinion that Software/Hardware should not be bind so tight together. So you like more power, That's great but industry pushed, as if you couldn't get more power using firmware updated hardware, that is if products were designed correctly to last longer. The tech industry marketing has worked well on/for you.

TPM is not solely used for DRM. Its a multipurpose tool used in security and encryption.

UAC is a GOOD THING for the 90% of average-joe users. Yes, it’s a change and can be annoyance to an experienced user, but it takes all of 10 seconds to disable if desired.

Also, your benchmarking article is from January, which could very likely be outdated.

That's interesting is that Win7 actually ran faster for me on my netbook than XP.

Your posts are amazingly nonsensical. So in that respect they are amusing. There's nothing wrong with scaling software to match increasingly more powerful hardware. And not just OS's either...word processing, video processing, multimedia playback...all of these need to follow suit.

And to say that new OS releases shouldn't "mandate hardware updates" is laughable. Firstly, some folks will already have machines that exceed the minimum specs, some won't. Secondly, it is pointless to produce a new OS that meets the needs of (today-5 year)'s users. The point is to move forward, not simply maintain. If manufacturers were to produce for the lowest common denominator, as you suggest, we'd all lose.

Microsoft said it would sell the Home Premium upgrade version of Windows 7 -- which most non-business customers already using Windows will want -- for $49.99 from Friday until July 11 in the United States. The discs would be shipped after general release. After July 11, the pre-order price will be $119.99, 8 percent less than the current $129.99 price tag for the comparable version of Vista, which cost $159.99 at launch in early 2007.

Today we have some news to share around Windows 7 including answering what may be some of the “hottest” questions people have as we head toward General Availability (GA) on October 22nd.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Brad Brooks, Corporate VP for Windows Consumer Marketing, to talk about today’s announcements.

Announcing the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program & Windows 7 Pricing

Special thanks to Brad for taking the time to talk through these details with me. You’ll find a transcript of the video here.

As Brad discussed in the video, today we’re announcing details for the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program, pricing, and a special pre-order offer for select markets.

But first, I want to talk a little bit more about GA and the worldwide availability of Windows 7. We’ve really focused a lot of our efforts on getting the product out to as many people around the world as quickly as possible. OEMs will start shipping PCs with Windows 7 in all language versions beginning on GA, October 22nd.

And for our retail software, we’ve made significant strides in terms of timing. Gone are the days when it could take months for all language versions to be available. In fact – we’ve narrowed the gap to just over ONE week!

On October 22nd, Windows 7 will be available in the following 14 languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Chinese (Hong Kong).

Then on October 31st, the remaining 21 languages will become available: Turkish, Czech, Portuguese, Hungarian, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Greek, Ukrainian, Romanian, Arabic, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Estonian, Slovenian, Hebrew, Thai, Croatian, Serbian Latin, and Latvian.

Windows 7 truly is a global release and I’m excited to be able to tell my international friends that when I say Windows 7 will be available for the holidays – I mean everywhere in the world.

But, you don’t have to wait until GA to get a new Windows PC. In fact, we know many people need that new PC sooner – for back to school specifically. And we have the answer for people who need a new PC now but still want to get Windows 7 and that’s the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program, which kicks off tomorrow, June 26th! Anyone who buys a PC from a participating OEM or retailer with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate on it will all receive an upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 7 at little or no cost to customers. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program will be available until January 31st, 2010 – and is global! For more information on taking advantage of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program, visit www.windows.com/upgradeoffer.

Another one of the most common questions I get is: how much will Windows 7 cost? Well, today we’re sharing these details.

For Windows 7, we are reducing the price on our most popular retail product for customers, the Home Premium Upgrade, by approximately 10% (depending on the market). In the U.S., this means a customer buying Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade will pay only $119.99 instead of the $129.99 being charged today for its predecessor.

Overall, customers will be paying less and getting more with Windows 7. This includes fun new features such as HomeGroup, Device Stage, Aero Shake, Snap, Peek, Jump Lists and our completely redesigned Windows Taskbar (one of my favorite new features in Windows 7 today). These new features make your PC simpler and much easier to use.

So here’s the low-down on pricing for Windows 7. The estimated retail prices for upgrade packaged retail product of Windows 7 in the U.S. are:

* Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade): $119.99
* Windows 7 Professional (Upgrade): $199.99
* Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade): $219.99

And the estimated retail prices for full packaged retail product of Windows 7 in the U.S. are:

* Windows 7 Home Premium (Full): $199.99
* Windows 7 Professional (Full): $299.99
* Windows 7 Ultimate (Full): $319.99

This means that Windows 7 Home Premium full retail product is $40.00 less than Windows Vista Home Premium today.

As Brad describes in the video, for Europe, we will not have a separate upgrade SKU for the packaged retail product versions of Windows 7 at GA. But we will be offering upgrade pricing on our full licenses to make sure that European customers who want to upgrade have the pricing options available in the rest of the world.

Finally, as a way of saying thank you to our loyal Windows customers, we are excited to introduce a special time limited offer! We will offer people in select markets the opportunity to pre-order Windows 7 at a more than 50% discount. In the US, this will mean you can pre-order Windows 7 Home Premium for USD $49.99 or Windows 7 Professional for USD $99.99. You can take advantage of this special offer online via select retail partners such as Best Buy or Amazon, or the online Microsoft Store (in participating markets).

This program begins tomorrow in the U.S., Canada and Japan. The offer ends July 11th in the U.S. and Canada and on July 5th for Japan or while supplies last. Customers in the UK, France and Germany, can pre-order their copy of Windows 7 starting July 15th and will run until August 14th (or supplies last) to ensure folks don’t miss out on this. Act fast if you want to be the first in line to get Windows 7 at this screaming deal! Note: The special low pre-order price will vary per country.
