I'd venture that the Vado HD compares favorably to a low-end miniDV camcorder. It'd likely capture more detail, and would probably have a similar dynamic range (blown-out highlights and a lack of shadow detail are both a Vado HD deficiency and a deficiency of all low-end video cameras). The RCA would win out if you'd like the ability to zoom, and the miniDV camcorder would be unlikely to suffer from the "rolling shutter" effect that plagues the Vado and most other CMOS-chip-based camcorders. If you're considering spending more and don't mind a larger camcorder, I'd highly recommend getting that reconditioned Canon HV20 for $350 --there's a thread somewhere around here about it. Its image quality kills both the Vado's and that of any standard def DV camcorder. I'm happy with my Creative Vado HD, as it's small, cheap, and convenient. |

You never know. Sometimes Amazon has a "gold box" sale price one day, then the next week that becomes the regular price. This camera model came out last fall, so a replacement will probably come out later this year. I would not be surprised if Amazon is closing out the old model to make room for the new product. fyi - a few days after the one-day sale, Amazon cut their regular price from $215 to $157. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep cutting the price until they sell out, then they replace the model with something newer. Amazon is also selling "open box units" for $116 with free shipping. |

What do you think about it at this price??? i bought this a month ago and used it this past weekend on a short trip.. i like it for that price. film quality is decent.. very simple to use and intuitive a couple of small complaints: doesn't come with wriststrap, bought a $4 Targus one on Amazon... and the builtin software isn't the 'premium' version (that costs 17 bucks more).. and actually crashed a bit on me but for 130 it's a cheap HD camera for simple filming |

If it's crashing on you, update its firmware. You can download the update from creative's web site. I Thought the thing was unacceptably unstable when I first purchased it, but haven't had a angle crash since updating. |

My only concern for this is the 8GB size. So I only get 2 hours of recording... So if I go away on vacation for 2 weeks without a laptop, is there anyway of transferring video from this to a temp storage device?? This is a hell of a lot cheaper than a Panasonic ZS3 that I was considering (but that is an excellent camera/camcorder) |

You go away on vacation for 2 weeks with any device that has a color screen, and you'll also need to charge or replace its battery. The Vado HD's battery will run out not long after it records 2 hours (or earlier if you spend a lot of time with it powered up but not recording. It both charges and transfers files over USB. I suppose you could grab a cheap netbook as a temp storage device, and either transfer your clips to its internal storage (assuming it has sufficient internal storage) or to SD cards (assuming you get a netbook with an SD slot). There've been plenty of netbook deals showing up on fatwallet lately. |

There are other pocket camcorders on the market that use removable flash memory cards. If you're going to be using the thing for regular long trips without a computer, one of the other products may be a better idea. There are a lot of these things on the market now days. The downside is that lots of removable stuff tends to make the camera more bulky. |

Did a little searching, found another option for your backup needs that may or may not work. With these USB sync devices, you should be able to copy the contents of one USB mass storage device to another. Belkin USB Anywhere http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=249832 http://www.gadgetspeak.com/gadget/article.rhtm/754/315831/article.html http://daz4590.co.uk/wordpress/2009/03/14/the-verdict-belkin-usb-anywhere/ Macally Sync Box II http://www.engadget.com/2005/04/05/macallys-sync-box-ii-portable-usb-data-copier/ http://www.everythingusb.com/macally_syncbox_ii.html USB Syncbox http://www.Amazon.com/IC-INTRACOM-USB-SYNCBOX/dp/B000VYCOHW/ http://www.eblazingtech.com/servlet/the-201/Macally-SyncBox-Portable-USB/Detail http://www.eblazingtech.com/servlet/the-14/eBlazing-Tech,-eblazingtech.com,-MACALLY/Detail Sima Hitch http://www.gethitch.com/about/ http://www.Amazon.com/Sima-USB-101-Digital-Transfer-System/dp/B000F9LRYY It's worth noting that most of these devices are ancient (as ancient as 2005 at least) and many if not all are no longer manufactured. I can't vouch for this solution. |

The idea with those would be that you'd travel with a brace of USB storage devices (a bunch of USB thumbdrives, or a USB card reader and a bunch of sufficiently large memory cards) and would copy over the contents of the Vado to those drives as you filled its internal storage. Might work. You'll still need to plug the Vado in to charge on occasion, though if you're not going off grid there should be USB ports around from which to draw power. |

Can this thread be moved out of expired back to the 'hot deals' forum? It's still live on Amazon's site. |
