Update
There is now a $20 rebate available for the motherboard, making it free after rebate (thanks subhasha31)

Rebate Link. Rebate dated june 26 - june 30

I'm not really sure what the difference between the TA790GX(B) and the TA790GX are, but this seems like a great deal.

1. AMD HDZ940XCGIBOX: $189.99
2. BIOSTAR TA790GXB A2+: $99.99 - $20 MIR = 79.99

Combo Discount: -$79.99
Combo Price: $209.99

Combo Deal

Does anyone happen to know what the differences are between the TA790GX and the TA790GX(B)??? besides no hdmi with the OB video?

I didn't study it for too long but the other difference is the audio CODEC used. The non B has the better one.

Check for the sideport memory. I didn't it listed but that doesn't mean they don't have it (check the Biostar website directly). It helps the IGP.

I just saw it on the NE website. The non B has the sideport memory. Not obvious but ..

Could it be (B)lue? From the color of the PCB.

Non B has two PCI Express 2.0 x16; important if you plan crossfire. All 790GX chip has sideport memory. Minimum size is 64MB, if it doesn't mention the size.

I will give you credit for the dual 16X(8X) slots but the sideport statement is incorrect. It is up to the MFGer to implement it or not. As in the B case, no to save cost. Also, Some 780G boards have sideport boost now. The pioneer was J&W.

If you are looking for a better board in the same class, try this ECS. Too bad NE doesn't offer any CPU+board combo with it. Yes, this one has the sideport memory. ECS Mobo Link.

If paying a bit more is an option, get the good old proven Gigabyte AM2+ board for ~$110 or this Gigabyte 770 board for $80 that has proven to be able to unlock cores. It has the SB710 southbridge.

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and ordered one. I won't be using crossfire anyway since I'm getting an nvidia card, and hopefully the sound thing isn't too big.

Got this CPU/MB along with a GTX 260/RAM combo deal and the total was just under $400 AR, not too bad for a decent upgrade.

That's a nice combo price.

I don't know much about BIOSTAR motherboards - but for a cheap - high performance PC - that looks like a nice option at 200 bucks.

Bummer

I bought this same combo about 3 weeks ago. My combo discount was only $50.
Running vista ultimate on it.

It is a decent bundle for the price.

I'm not a big OC'er but the capabilities are there; both in the mobo itself and the AMD overdrive software.

generally well regarded. they're often the ones that get the features others don't, like overclocking and unlocking cores etc. I think they're one of the big OEM ones now.

Not bad, but I just built a:
Phenom II x2 550 Black Edition ($102) + BIOSTAR TA790GXE 128M AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail (110) - MIR, and unlocked it to 4 cores @ 3.3ghz. It's doing pretty good, and this board has HDMI output, for about the same price.

thanks for the link! Their ad on the front page does mention a rebate for this combo ("Free motherboard after rebate"), but I couldn't find it yesterday.

I wonder if they pulled it when they realized the 10% off coupon was stacking?

Either way, I'll send it in. If it works, it's like making $10 bucks on the motherboard

edit they now have the rebate linked to the deal

If you haven't yet ordered and are on the fence see this thread for information on an additional $20 savings on the processor with coupon code EMCLTPL82 if you chat with a rep. It is YMMV, but if you get a nice rep they will refund the difference.

Anyways, back to this deal, someone in another forum brought up a really good (or in our case bad) point about the rebate at "myrebate411.com". If you enter the promotion code BINE051609063009010 into their site to start the rebate process, it shows up a different Biostar motherboard- not the TA790GXB. I have emailed the rebate site asking them to update the promotion to include the TA790GXB with the amount of $20.

Normal turn-around time is 48hours... Let's see what happens.

No response yet, chatted with NE said to call the manufacture... who of course was closed today. Hopefully something will happen next week.

BTW, I ordered some OCZ DDR2 6400 RAM which installed like a champ and loaded Windows 7 today. OS is very snappy and I like the interface. Unfortunately, the IGP scores a 4.1 for the Windows Experience, but the RAM and CPU are both 7.x (out of 7.9). So far I am very happy with the results. I will run some Prime95 overnight to make sure all is well then try some OC

everything up and running here and so far so good. Used two sticks of OCZ Platinum 4GB DDR2 1066, and an EVGA GTX 260.

I'm still using XP, but everything installed without a hitch. The bios that was installed on the board recognized the X4 940 without any problems, although I updated to the latest bios anyway. Also, I did have to go into the bios's OC settings to get the ram running at 1066, but not a big deal since it's running just fine.

Can you run 6 gigs of DDR2? I could be wrong, as I'm not completely sure, but I thought you had to move up to ddr3 to run 3 sticks (or an odd number of stick)? I thought ddr2 had to be two or four?

Also, prices between 1066 and 800 are pretty similar right now (ddr2), so I'm not sure how much you'll save.

in any case, 6 gigs of ddr2 800 vs 4 gigs of 1066... I would say you're better off with the two extra gigs. So long as you're running a 64-bit OS. Since 32-bit OS's will only recognize 3 gigs, max.

Now 4 gigs of ddr2 800 vs 4 gigs ddr2 1066. I'm sure there is a small increase with the 1066, but honestly, I don't think it's all that much. I've run at both speeds and could never tell the difference. I think the only place you'll really see the difference are during a benchmarks, and maybe a frame or 2 increase in games. but other than that, no real difference imo.
