wow, just wow, this is such a good price i can't even wrap my head around it. at 40/3mo they were the lowest price by like 12 dollars (compared to others offering ssl). now they are just insane.

Can anyone who's used Giganews please comment on which service is faster/more reliable?
The only concern I would have is paying up front for a year.

I used to use Giganews and had an unlimited account (platinum I believe) and I recently switched to Astraweb. I realized that I wasn't really using it to its full potential. I now have the 180 gb for $25 and could not be happier. I have seen virtually no difference in speed or reliability (both have outstanding speed and reliability) and I am saving so much money with Astraweb. This is a fantastic deal and I am considering taking advantage of this instead.
What is the purpose of usenet? Can some one explain how to use?

...let me re-phrase with thunderstruck... "Downloading? It's for reading news and opinions, nothing more. Hmm, just checked and I read 180 gigs worth of news last month."
prodeje: i use sabnzbd, wonderful setup. bug: i have been with astraweb for probably 3 years. they have never changed their pricing but have gone from (iirc) 6 threads, no ssl, and 90day retention, to 300+ retention, ssl and 20 threads.
i also used to get about 150kb/s per thread, and now get about 550kb/s per thread (on 7Mbit connection), also when others bitch about completion with their servers, i have been able to get everything the giganews guys have confirmed okay with them.

Yeah, that is always an issue. However, the price might be worth the risk/aggravation of having to pay up front. The cost of doing cheap business I guess

I'm very pleased with Astraweb as I am currently on $11 a month for unlimited and have been for the past 7 months. I was with Giganews paying way too much before that. I currently maintain a steady 1.85Mbps down.
Paired with Newsleecher, it rocks (www.newsleecher.com).

What are the current legal issues when it comes to usenet downloading? I'm not up-to-date.
My previous understanding was that file-sharing could lead one legally afoul because you would be uploading as well as downloading. It was the act of uploading improper material that crossed legal lines. Downloading was always permissible because you weren't redistributing anything improper. What you pulled INTO your PC was strictly YOUR business.
Is this still true?
(When it comes to buying unlimited service or pay-by-download blocks, I would rather buy in blocks because I know that I'll end up becoming all obsessive-compulsive about grabbing anything and everything that I can find out there instead of picking and choosing what I would want most.)
I've used Astrweb since 2004 and never had a problem...retention has increased to over 300 days and free ssl. I generally use the pay-by-download plans. Header information doesnt count toward your download total and you are credited 10% to your account. So for $25 = 180GB + 18GB (10% header credit) = 198GB limit.
Can we keep these in the usenet thread? Anyone who uses usenet probably agrees with me that there shouldn't be a million different usenet topics talking about... you know the rest.
Is this DSL? Thanks. It's not DSL as in your internet provider like cable or fios. DSL is just the name of one of their plans.
It's a Usenet (aka Newsgroup) account, Usenet has been around since before websites were on the internet. Think of it like torrents but you don't have to upload, and your downloads go as fast as your connection can handle.
I'm on Astraweb's $11 a month plan now and am considering switching to this. I have 30mb fiber here and Astraweb can max out the connection 99% of the time.

Thanks joogle for the post.
Fyi, for those who are interested in Giganews vs. AstraWeb: I'm seeing 20mb vs 15mb on average speed, but those will probably fluctuate. Considering how I had the Giganews Diamond Unlimited SSL for $30/month versus $8/month for AstraWeb, the latter is a much better deal. Thanks again OP.

"updated 1-3-2008" not sure anyone would have seen it
