Very tempted, but 800 x 480 is keeping me from pulling the trigger.

arent most websites nowadays doing 1024x768? (which usually means 8.9" screen)

i dont mind scrolling up/down, but i HATE scrolling left/right

I am not Netbook guy but to me this price is unbeatable.
In trade-off, its look is dull and screen resolution is too far below the par. Price matches for guy of casual use on travel.

In 4 one thanks!
May be shitty specs but at this price its too good to pass.
Here is a review of the cloudbook (though the model on sale here has 1GB RAM, 60GB hdd and windows XP - all better specs then the review model)
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4282

They do mention it upscales to 1000 x 600 reasonably well, so hopefully that solves the side scroll issue.

Thanks, OP.

I have been lurking around for a deal to upgrade the Nokia N800 we take on vacation for web browsing, etc. Having Win XP and lots of room on the HDD for movies, etc makes this a no brainer.

At this price, I will be able to fleabay the N800 and accessories, pay the fees and come out slightly ahead.

Nice deal. These make great Skype/VOIP servers and or webcam servers, for running yawcam =)

Nice. Don't really need one, but at this price I couldn't resist.

hmm... wonder if there are any osx hacks for this?

probably not, since it's via right?

I was planning on using this netbook as a media server. But the external-monitor problem ticks me off. I wonder they have fixed the problem.

notebookreview

>>>>> Another interesting problem we encountered during our first day with the CloudBook involved connecting an external monitor to the built-in DVI port on the side of the notebook. After connecting an external display and changing the settings in the default gOS operating system the CloudBook responded with an error message and refused to display anything on the external monitor, after we disconnected the external monitor the built-in LCD could not be reset to the native 800 x 480 resolution and would only work in 640 x 480 mode ... not acceptable for much of anything.

>>>>> After several hours of work we were forced to format the hard drive and install Microsoft Windows in order to restore the display to the correct default resolution. Again, that's just not something you expect from a brand new notebook.

>>>>> After we installed Windows on the CloudBook and connected the external display to the DVI port we discovered that the CloudBook only supports one widescreen resolution (1000 x 600) so if you use a large widescreen external display you will not be able to set the correct resolution or aspect ratio on the CloudBook. For comparison purposes, we tested the Asus Eee PC with the same widescreen external monitor and the Eee PC supported all the correct resolutions and aspect ratios.

They do have some other very cheap netbooks, but the cheapest with XP now is $249 (10' ASUS)

www.notebookreview.com said:Despite the issue of fan noise, the most troublesome issue we encountered during the test period was heat. While plugged in the bottom of the CloudBook reached temperatures of 126 degrees Fahrenheit (too hot for direct skin contact over an extended period). HDTune reported hard drive temperatures as hot as 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit). During our benchmarking tests (which stressed the system and generated more heat) the WiFi card inside the CloudBook would stop working after 30-45 minutes of use. The only way to get the WiFi card to start working again was to turn off the CloudBook and let it cool down for at least 10 minutes before restarting the system and connecting to the Internet again.

Conclusion

At first glance the CloudBook is an impressive design with some innovative features and some reasonably impressive specs for the $400 price tag. However, upon closer examination it's clear that VIA and Everex had to make a number of sacrifices to bring this ultra-mobile notebook to the market for such a low price.

The low-capacity slow hard drive, and slow overall performance make the CloudBook a less than compelling purchase compared to the current generation Asus Eee PC 4G ... despite the much smaller storage space. The fact that the CloudBook cannot support the correct resolutions for widescreen external monitors is another problem for anyone who wants to connect this laptop to a larger screen. The issue of excessive heat build up inside the CloudBook is perhaps the most obvious "deal killer." Who wants to own a laptop that you can only use for 30-45 minutes when connected to the internet before you have to turn it off and let it cool down?

I do have to say the high-resolution scaling on the tiny screen and 30GB of storage space are very nice features, but these benefits pale in comparison to the other problems and limitations the CloudBook brings to the table. In short, I have a hard time recommending the current generation of the Everex CloudBook for any consumer. Given the strength of the Asus Eee PC and upcoming budget subnotebooks from other manufacturers, there simply isn't a compelling reason to purchase the CloudBook.

Pros

- Excellent high-resolution scaling on the tiny screen
- Innovative design

Cons

- Very low performance
- Included gOS operating system is a joke (a bad joke at that)
- Horrible touchpad interface
- No easy upgrades, opening chassis voids warranty
- System gets too hot ... overheats and stops working
- Loud cooling fan that is constantly on when plugged in

Can you elaborate? Most of the issues seem to be related to the earlier models with the proprietary gOS version of Linux. This is a later version, with WinXP, which seems to have addressed at least some of the issues.

My Cloudbook arrived yesterday - here is a quick review.

The refurbished unit ships in a plain white box, with a photocopy of the quick start manual, but OEM disc with manual, drivers, etc. AC charger and battery appear to be new, as does the netbook itself - no signs of use or wear.

Snapped in the battery, powered up the unit, and off it went. It quickly found a wireless router, approximately 15 feet, 2 rooms away, and establised a solid connection. I first downloaded and installed the free home version of Avast AV, rebooted, then went on to run Windows update for XP SP3. This took a couple of hours (I did not monitor the process too closely), some Windows required restarts, but the whole process was smooth and completely uneventful.

While I cannot provide any specific benchmarks, the web browsing experience seems consistent with our other XP desktops and notebooks, and even after several hours of software updates, where the cooling fan would kick on for a good deal of the time, the case felt no warmer than my Dell XPS M140.

I havd read the online horror stories about the early Cloudbooks, spend several hours pouring through the Cloudbook forums on netbookuser.com, and based on my initial experience, believe that Everex FINALLY got it right - 1 GB RAM, WinXP SP3, 60 GB 1.8 HDD. In other words, Do not let the earlier experience of those with the failed attempt of a customized Linux OS (gOS), and insufficient RAM (512 MB) sway you from getting in on this hot deal - which I expect WILL RETURN, from time to time.
