Wasn't looking for a new cooker, but since it is SS and the basket is SS, I'll pull the trigger. Now what to do with my current one...

I saw this and I think this is a great (features) product and price. Stainless steel would be my first choice in cookware. No Teflon anything. Even anodized AL I have concerns about.

direct heat means that it is not as good as the older Tatung double container system (still available) in use for several decades. This unit is apparently an answer for those who either do not know or would like the inferior japanese design.

Double container means that the rice and water is in the pot and water is placed outside the pot between the pot and the heater core. This virtually eliminates the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot or burning.

So if this is no good...what's a good one?

most cheap pots you can get from the market use direct heat. Costco usually carry some Teflon pot for less than 30.

Tatung indirect heat is the BEST rice cooker I've ever seen and used! I'm not sure about the direct heat, but really, if you buy a $50 indirect heat one, it can last you a life time. Unlike the teflon crap that peels and chips with less than one year of use.

I have this one that has a silver finish(I assume it's teflon) because it's peeling in little dots and I need to replace it. I feel like I'm eating pieces of paint now when I look at the bottom of the pot.

Can you give us an example of a $50 indirect heat rice cooker?

I just bought this one, have no prior experience with it. But the stove top pressure cooker that my mother (and me by extension) have used all our lives used the indirect heat principle - rice pot in the main vessel with water in between.

Let's see how the electric version works out.

Zojirushi is the best. I've seen them in Costco.

Zojirushi is the best. I've seen them in Costco.

Why?

Zojirushi is a fanncy expensive one. It is good. But Tatung's rice cooker can cook the same quality rice at much lower price. My Tatung rice cooker has been with me for 15 years, still working great.
