If you have 2, you can plug them into one another to see how much power they consume (for those who enjoy leaving them plugged in near their desk to watch the changes in power usage as disks spin up and so forth).

I haven't come up with a read for the last one. Maybe give it to your parole officer or mother-in-law?

I bought one from this store a few weeks ago and it works great....I
have it on my window A/C and can watch the dollars flow out of my
wallet as it consumes 520W.

Save $18.99 and dont buy it. Oh yea, turn the lights and fans off when youre not in the room.

Thanks OP. Very nice price.

Izpoof said: Save $18.99 and dont buy it. Oh yea, turn the lights and fans off when you're not in the room.Is that you, Dennis Miller?

Not being sarcastic but what is the point of getting this? I mean it only shows the wattage you use and does not actually help anything else, does it? It is cool to see how much watt you consume but isn't just that? I mean we all know iron sucks power, hair dryer sucks power, etc. but are we going to do? Stop using ironing or drying our hair??? Sorry, I am just curious and not bashing the deal.

Imagine you have a fridge from the 80s (with the super-cool colors of the time ... lime green, perhaps). Then imagine your super flashy, must-have-the-latest-greatest significant other decides that retro isn't cool anymore. Since you frequent fatwallet, we will all assume you are thrifty / cheap.

This allows you to prove to yourself that buying that new-fangled titanium coated super conducting fridge will actually save you money after X months vs using your old retro vacuum tube fridge... Stuff like that.

Or, you can just plug it into the wall and just tell your hippie friends you are being 'green' and they will be like 'ohhhhh man... cooool'

Say you look at your electric bill and you decide you want to reduce it. Where do you start? What electronics are the biggest draws? How much power does your entertainment center use when it is off? Is the cost of leaving that computer on 24/7 worth the benefit? How much money would you save by replacing something old and inefficient with a modern energy star version? How many hours will it take to break even on a fluorescent bulb? Use this enough and you will see the little dollar signs dissipating over each outlet. Informed decisions are better decisions.

I see your points guys but the info for all this can be found online or from other sources. The only thing I totally agree is the coolness factor, that's it. Of course this is my opinion.

My power company charges me 5 cents a KW whether I use it in the day or night, however during the day between 8am and 6pm there is a max peak demand of 2kw. If you go over it even for just 5 minutes you are slapped with a $6.00 penalty for each kw over 2kw. It is not uncommon for my neighbors to pay $80 in penalties each month. The Kill-A-Watt lets me audit every 120v item in my house and stay under the 2kw limit.

You dont need this to know that fridge from the 80s is a power eater.
Why not spend $18 on a device to let you know that the 8cyl big block is gonna use up more gas than the 4cyl toyoya.
LOL

I live in PA. Power company is PPL.

How exactly can it be found from other sources? Everyone's refrigerators deteriorate at different rates and in different ways. Your bearings may be at 50% capacity driving energy consumption through the roof. Heck even with NEW appliances I bet there's a +-5 to 10% difference in actual vs 'rated'.

Turn off you computer when not using it. Duh
entertainment center draw such a minimal ammount of power when its off that its a moot point, but if youre worried about it just unplug it.

How much money would you save by replacing something old and inefficient with a modern energy star version???? Uhm you would save the SAME amount by doing it anyway and NOT buying this lame device!! lol

Again, this isnt rocket science people. If its old, then replace it if you can afford it.
If youre not in the room, turn the light off.
I mean, cmon, if you need this lame device to help you use your brain then you better start looking for something that works on your faucet and toilet to let you know how much $ can be saved in water.
That lawn mower needs a device to let you know how much gas youre using compared to the newer mowers.
Heck, why dont you buy a device to let you know how the other device is doing!!!!!!!

HAHAHA.

Save your $$ people, no deal here or give me your money and I'll tell you to turn off the light when you leave the room or to get rid of the 12 year old dishwasher for a new one(better yet, wash by hand.. shhhhhhh that's a secret)wink wink.

You sir should practice what you preach. Maybe you should buy a device to let you know when your posts are hogwash, then you could save some time and do something productive.

I understand where you're coming from, but some people are fanatical about some things and you wont get them to change their mind. If they want to waste their money on this, then more power to them. We all have our druthers.

I do agree that some things are just common sense and I do know that an old fridge or hot water heater is not energy efficient.
This is more of a novelty than anything, but some folks like novelties, let em have their fun I say.

When ever a Kill-A-Watt topic comes up on Fat Wallet, there are two camps. Those who can benefit from the knowledge and those who cannot. For those who cannot, then please don't wast your $20. However if you did have a Kill-A-Watt, you could see how much energy you have wasted posting on this topic

cheapest I've seen in a while, good deal OP. also please quit thread crapping.

Well, most people think that this device is waste of money. But if you can not MEASURE it, you can not IMPROVE it. It is nice to know how much I will save if I upgrade an appliance. For ex. you have your modem + router + tv standby on 24/7. If you can find out that a time programmer can pay itself in a year by shutting them off after midnight in weekdays, you might consider investing some money on it.

Agreed and Amen. For a month I unplugged a TV, Wii, stereo and such when not in use. I was amazed my bill went down by half. Yes half. I will buy one of these to determine just how much power things are sucking up when turned off.

Or, if you just shut them off anyway when not being used you can still save money.
TADA!!!!

BTW, If I cannot measure, I sure as heck can improve it. Again, it does not take a rocket scientist to know that if you unplug or turn a device off, you will save money.

Buy a new dishwasher and replace that 15 year old rust bucket and you save money.

If you realllllly wanna save money, then start by saving $20.00.

Gotta love this scenerio. " Sir, I bought this GE hot water heater and after I installed it, filled it up and tested it with this silly device, I realized Im not saving as much as what that kenmore might save me, so please can I return it and buy the kenmore? And if that kenmore dont do it for me, I'd like to return that and buy the Maytag. "

Uhmm, you just proved that guys point. What does it matter how much you saved by turning it off, the point is you saved.

And I'm not quite sure that your savings went down by half, that's not a good thing. Maybe you meant that your savings doubled or that your energy costs went down by half.

I can see know what types of people buy this thing.
Good grief.

This does have some very good uses. I will be using mine for my home business to monitor all power consumption from business computers. That way, I don't have to guess on utility reimbursement, I will know down to the penny what I have to pay for power.

"entertainment center draw such a minimal ammount of power when its off that its a moot point, but if youre worried about it just unplug it."

Funny - it was with Kill-a-Watt that I came to know my DVR consumes about 75-80 watts on or off, while my PC consumes about 50 watts once settled in. Roku takes about 10. I agree with you on everything else - TV / DVD Player consume less than 1 watt when on standby.

Unfortunately, no good way to switch off a DVR and still get it to function - but when I know I'm not looking forward to any recordings, I just switch it off.

I got a few power outlet switches from the dollar store - they light up when on, so its easy to notice and remember to switch them off when switching lights off in the room.

Ok ooooo and izpoof, here is your scenario:
You've slowly saved money to upgrade various appliances in your house. You have $1000 and your replacement options are the living room wall AC unit, the bedroom wall AC unit, your 36" tube TV, your refrigerator, your washing machine, or your microwave oven. They all need to be replaced soon as they are old, but are all working. You know approximately how much use each gets a month. Which do you replace first so that the energy savings add up quickest to let you replace the next one as soon as possible?

Duh, The bedroom ac or the fridge 1 & 2 or vica versa, the washing machine, the living room ac, and finally either the microwave or tv as both are nice to have but not need to have items.

See, pretty easy and I didnt have to spend $20.00 and my degree is in fire science not rocket science.

Look, it is obvious that those that are arguing this thing already spent the money on it are are trying hard to justify the purchase. If it makes you all feel better about wasting your money, then by all means go ahead and argue this thread.
All 12 of you.

You didn't answer the question at all. The question wasn't, of these appliances, which do you think are the most important. They all need to be replaced, and the question was: "Which do you replace first so that the energy savings add up quickest to let you replace the next one as soon as possible?". Try again.

Also here is another scenario for you: In my house the washing machine and dishwasher were on the same circuit from the power box. If I ran both simultaneously, they would occasionally trip the breaker, in spite of the expected normal draw of both being far below anything that should trip the breaker. Which of the two is having random, seriously out of range power draws and needs to be replaced or repaired?

Honestly, just because you don't have a use for a product doesn't make it useless to everyone. I don't have a use for tampons, but the world would sure be a messier place without them.

I answered the question like a rational person. You dont buy based on how much you would save, you buy on what you NEED by priority. It makes no sense to buy a TV only because that saves you the most when you are sitting there with no AC and nothing cold to drink in dirty clothes.

If you desire to buy based on which energy savings add up the quickest then you have more pressing needs in life, like giving the children cold milk from the fridge or making them a tad more comfortable with cool air.

The washing machine and dishwasher can be run at different times, you dont need this item to tell you that you're drawing more amps than your breaker can handle.
Youre making up scenrios just to justify the purchase of this. Seriously, it has never happened to me nor anyone that I know and doubtful it has happened to you. If however it has, you still need to get a repairman to look at both so it's a moot point.

Hang it up guy. If you want to feel better about buying this, then you certainly do not need to post here to feel it. Just smile and tell yourself it was money well spent and you can believe yourself.

The tampon analogy dosent apply here as we are not talking about tampons.
