Costco also sells the Delonghi Penguino 11,000 BTU for $379.99 plus shipping. However, Dealmonger sells the same recertified one for $249.99 delivered, which beats both deals.
I'm actually in the market for one...what to get what to get...The Delonghi Pinguino PAC A110 11,000 BTU model seems to have very poor reviews on Amazon.
For the longest time, three DeLonghi models were between $200-$240 on Amazon. I put all three in my cart, and waited (and waited, and forgot, and waited, and forgot...) to visit my mom to show her the three, and let her decide which one she wanted. Eventually, though, the price shot up to between $600+ to almost $800!!! Wish they had only one model for $200. I would've bought it and been done with it. Choices! Choices! Maybe the prices will come back. Reviews were not too good, though.
I just ordered this unit last night AP420HS. It has a built in heat pump + dehumidifier for $314 shipped. You can get 3% through ebates but I forgot to use it. Used $50 off $399+ with Code 50OFFECO (Exp. 07/31/2009). It says $399 or more but it checked out at $314.
Power usage on the AP420HS at 115v * 9.3amps = 1070w I don't think it has a timer.

I've got a portable AC I picked up last year, and one thing I found out too late is the size of the tank the water collects in is important-on mine if it's a real muggy night it's possible for it to get full in the middle of the night, resulting in the AC turning off until I get up and empty it.
AFAIC, having lived with one - 3 summers ago - this type of unit sucks, instead of cools. Getting rid of the condensate is biggest drawback -- try kneeling at side of the unit opening up at bottom, and pulling out nice ***over-flowingly full*** pan of water, lift pan to a bucket, pour water into bucket -not spilling any on floor-, and of course, empty bucket.
Yes, this Costco unit supposedly gets rid of condensate itself - but HOW?? Only way I can think is by heating it up, turn it into vapor, and pumping it out the air hose. That has to cost in terms of efficiency.
This type units is all about "SHOW"; Good window unit is cheaper, and works better.
Interesting. My roommate and I have a constant war of the thermostat (I maintain that 65-68 degrees at bedtime is not unreasonably cool... but 72 is unreasonably warm!) and this may just end it with violent force. However, I'd want to be sure it was worth it, even at the deal price, before I put forth almost $300!
I think you are confusing this air conditioner with a fan. While the single hose system does have a significant impact on efficency, it is incorrect to say that the unit "draws hot outside air into the room as it pushes out the hot inside air." There is actual cooling that takes place. It is true that hot outside air is drawn into the room, but the exhaust air contains more heat that is contained in the air that is being drawn in, result: cooler room. A good window unit will beat a portable unit every day and under every condition, but if you are in a situtation where a window unit is not a feasible option, a two hose unit is the best you can do. I have two single hose units (Bedroom 9000btu and Living Room 12000btu) and both do a respectable job cooling those rooms on a really hot day (10-15 degrees cooler than outside in a poorly insulated home - on average). None of these kinds of units will freeze ice on a 95 degree day, but to be able to make the room more comfortable is worth it to me.
I believe this works by pulling air from inside the room 1/2 of which is cooled and pushed into the room, the other half is used to push past the radiator and is exhausted though the hose with the water content from condenser.

Just received mine on Monday. Super fast shipping and everything arrived in great condition. I'm using this in my FROG (finished room over garage) that I use as my office. First impressions...... loud as a freight train. I have to turn it off to use my phone or hear my radio. It does seem to cool very well in a short period of time. I'm not sure I'm going to keep it but that's why I bought it from Costco. Also, the hose seems really fragile and dents easily. The part that fits into the window needs to be much improved. It does not fit my window because the front lip is too high. Instructions suck but that's to be expected.
