Overall, I think these are fine speakers for HT use but am not particularly fond of using satellites with such small woofers. To my ears the 3" size can't get down low enough to avoid pushing your sub crossover up. So with such small sats I end up feeling a compromise between lacking 100Hz reproduction or being able to locate the sub. Not a big deal if you run subs up front or don't mind the dip, but there are sacrifices to made using such a small satellite.

Having said that, these are nice for the price if you are ok with the compromise.

Is that HSU or Dayton or HSU making them for Dayton? If it is made by HSU and for $99, it is a steal. I particularly love their VTF-2 subs! For the money, I see no better.

I saw Energy sub in Costco for 129.99, not sure good or bad price but thought if someone wants to evaluate one option.

Don't buy any SUB... again don't buy any sub just because it is a sub..

hey, genius, have you heard of Klipsch? Guess who bought out Energy? Bingo. Good luck getting a receiver that will do anything decent for $150 by itself. There are only countless reviews on AVSForum about how this is the best entry level home theater system you can get. I just bought a couple of rc-10s and rc-minis this past week and combined it with the s10.3 sub. the sub is huge. the s8.3 would probably do fine with this 5 piece.

#1: Rarely is it a good idea to buy a speaker/receiver bundle unless you just want something dirt cheap. Buy your speakers based on the quality of the speakers, buy your receivers based on the quality of the receiver.

#2: Energy is a great brand. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you've never heard of them, I doubt you're very educated in modern speakers. Read the reviews and listen to opinions in this thread. I'd take Energy's over most of your big name/big box store brands (Polk, Bose, etc) anyday.

IMO, a good subwoofer should just be a good subwoofer, not just good for home theater or music. We often hear such description because a subwoofer is crippled in a way that makes it better for one application over the other. For example, a loud ported sub with poor bass performance may get passed off as a good HT subwoofer, and a sealed sub with poor low bass extension but good bass performance may be called a good music subwoofer. To me, both of these are just compromises in design that has been chosen. A truely good subwoofer would not have such limitations. That said, I don't think a HSU subwooer would have any issues reproducing music compared to a REL, which I find to be a rather dry bunch of subwoofers.

I wanted to add to this thread that if anyone is looking to stay within the same price range as these speakers, my local Costco stores sells a Energy Take Classic subwoofer for something like $130 or less. Won't knock your socks off, but will round out the bottom end nicely, at lest getting you to the 40-50Hz region solidly. Good luck.

eD is internet hype. there...i said it. they made a good performer that after time is showing it's QC issues. and they are ugly as sin and cheaply made.

they shouldn't even be listed in the same category as the SVS, HSU, Epik and even av123.
