Thanks OP. Can I use this one to access my paid ATT account, which is using USB stick?

Thanks. I think so. You need to take off the SIM card out of the USB card and put it inside this Express Card. BTW, as far as I know, Express Cards (and, any PCMCIA card) are faster than USB 2.0.

Good luck,
Tintin

If you don't have any plans already, what are your options with this thing?

Edit:

Never mind. Checked website, looks like you can sign up for DataConnect plan without contract for $60 per month. Data is limited to 5GB per month.

Woo! Hoo! I am in Hot Deal list on FW Home Page. More Green please!

Nice deal! unfortunately for me ATT service is terrible where I would need this, at out lakehouse.

I bought a similar item, a Sierra Wireless aircard that was unlocked. Turns out you can't just take the SIM card out of your phone and put it in something like this and use it. Without that option, it's nothing more than a cheap card that you still need to go through the carrier to get the expensive data plan. I have an iPhone and still can't get it to work (and I have the mandatory data plan with the iPhone). I am working on jailbreaking the iPhone to see if I can tether it to a laptop\desktop but so far, no luck yet.

If it's unlocked, why does it need to say AT&T/Cingular? What's the point? Is it only usable on those networks?

Yes for 3G. There's two different bands of 3G on GSM. ATT uses one. TMobile uses the other. For all your other providers, like regional ones, you have to figure out which. That's why you can't use an IPhone 3G on TMobile and get 3G, it doesn't physically support TMobile's 3G frequencies on the chipset. It will work as EDGE though.

Oh and you can put a sim from a phone in to make it work. Just depends on if the data plan on your phone is one that will work for this card as well. This varies from provider as they all handle data provisioning differently. You also don't need to jailbreak an iPhone to get tethering enabled with the new software.

FYI - for some reason iPhone data plans do NOT work with any of these cards. IIRC it's due to account provisioning. As for tethering - just do a web search and you'll find you can enable it on 3g iPhones with v3 firmware without jailbreaking.

What I don't understand is: does this kind of card requires a SIM card with specific settings?

Meaning, if I go to London, can I just buy a compatible SIM CARD (UTMS) that actually used for phone, pop it in these AT&T card, and have Internet?

Hmm, someone in Amazon said this card don't play well with Mac OSX...

I have a Blackberry Curve. Will my sim work with this card? I was going to tether my Curve to my Acer, but there is not yet any software for the 8310.

Yes, you need a laptop data plan to use the card. iPhone or other phone specific dataplan will ot work (jailbreak or not).

Its Specification:

UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA = 850/1900/2100 MHz
GPRS/EDGE = 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Also, Apple Mac Compatible (OS ver 10.4 or later)

So, it will work worldwide (including London, of course) with a SIM card (pre paid is OK) that is allowd/provisioned to use to connect a laptop (not a SIM that is just for making phone calls).

This is not quite right. When you insert the card in a PC Laptop then it automatically downloads the software necessary for Window PCs. But, it does not do so for Macs. You have to go to Option's website and download the Mac software before insertting the card in the Mac. I do not use Mac and didn't try it in a Mac, but I saw the instructions. Also, back of the box clearly says:

Specification:

UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA = 850/1900/2100 MHz
GPRS/EDGE = 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Apple Mac Compatible (OS ver 10.4 or later)

Most likely, NO. You have to get into a laptop plan and provision that in your SIM. Then it will work.

Yes, unfortunately, T-Mobile use 1700 MHz band in USA for its 3G network. Most phones/cards left that band out. This card will work in T-Mobile GPRS (2G/Standard network), but will be considerabley slower than the 3G network cards.

I will stick with tethering with my Nokia with $15 MediaNet plan.
Until I see this, I was thinking about this card and adding one more line w/ $15 MediaPlan (total $25) so I don't need to share with my regular line.

Anyone try this with ATT/Cingular's old "Media Works" data plan?

GoBears98 said: Anyone try this with ATT/Cingular's old "Media Works" data plan?

I didn't try, but I doubt if it will work straight out-of-box. You may be able to jailbreak, but I don't know. Post in Howard Forums. There are super exparts hanging there.

Buy it if you want to experiment. The price is unbeatable, and it is a great product. I bought it for $55 in May. Can't believe the $35 price!

Logging out for now. MORE Green please!

Thanks,

so it's titled 7.2Mbps but then the description is "Expected HSDPA download speeds of 600 Kbps - 1.4 Mbps" . wtf?

Problem w/ AT&T's network. They haven't opened-up 7.2Mbps yet. Current theoretical max is 3.6Mbps, but you will never be able to get more than 1.0Mbps anywhere in US in AT&T's network.

If you want speed then Sprint EV-DO is the best (but very limited service area).

Tintin

I have this card... I swap out the SIM on my iPhone when I need to use it for road trips..etc..

AT&T can see the difference, as I logged into my account online while it was running on the GT and it showed a picture of the GT instead of the iPhone! Knowing this... I've used this setup very sparingly, and not for mass data consumption and they haven't done anything yet and I'm serveral billing cycles deep with the card. In the AT&T online account management area... In the data usage logs, the data transfers look the same via the iPhone and the card. I figure as long as don't get stupid with usage, it won't set off any alarms.
