I have a Shun 7" Cleaver. Love it. Paid $175. This set is a good deal, but I don't need anything else b/c I use a cleaver & 3" paring knife 95% of the time.
whoa now zeddgara... it's scientifically proven that monster cables don't sound/look better... but I think it could ALSO be scientifically proven that these knives will cut your arm/hand off better than most knives on the market.
I bet these are simply amazing if you are really gung ho about cooking, but if you are not, and you don't know how to effectively use them... they would look pretty. Pretty like that $180 nitrogen injected HDMI cable you have sitting BEHIND your TV...

great price on the bentley of knives. don't cook enough to ever justify spending $700 let alone $1300 bucks on a set of knives. I'm perfectly happy with my Henckels Twin Cuisine which were a 1/3 of the price of the shun's on woot. I keep them very sharp, and they cut though anything.
I have a set oF twin cuisine and they are very good indeed, great handles. I also have a set of Shun classics and they are sharper. These Ken Onions are an unique bunch with the handles being wide in profile but thin, don't suit me at all. I do like the deal, though. Great looking block. If you have small hands, these knives are for you.
zeddgara said: I view proponents of this as the same type that can swear they hear the difference in sound when using monster cables.
I hear the difference, and it ain't good. The quality of Monster cables sucks dong, and they're extremely over-priced. Planet Waves or Mogami are the way to go for cables.
Anyhoo....expensive knives! I have a set that I bought at WalMart or something for probably $20. They're sharp, and they cut stuff. What more can $700 knives do, honestly?
edit: Instead of giving me red, you could answer my question. Oh wait, this is FW....
If you like the feel of these knives in your hand then these are a great deal. I have several Shun knifes and they are nice, better than my other two sets. However the blades are thin and you can nick the cutting edge on bone, but they cut great. I would recommend heading out to a store that carries them and hold one to see if you like the feel before ordering.
I agree. I am a guy, I have interest in cars and technology. Why buy a dSLR when a Kodak Easy Share takes pics ? Why buy a lotus when Kia has a car that has same size and better gas mileage ? (btw, i would NEVER buy a kia... i would buy a hyundai before a kia if it came down to it)
Its all about quality and interest. Sure if these knives have quality material, then they have to be expensive.
Id be interested to see that how many of FWF members will pay me $50/roll of Toilet Paper if I was to come up with a novel idea of material. Im thinking about TP because its equally useful to guys and gals both
I am glad these are gone. I absolutely cannot afford them and I wanted to buy them! I had myself seriously debating picking up several and selling the rest to pay for my set.
Take it from someone who collects custom knives that individually cost as much or more than this set, these are outstanding kitchen knives. If all you care about is being able to do something, you can always find a cheaper way to do it. However, if you care about value, these knives are an outstanding value, even at regular prices, which made this deal a no brainer.

And as far as a pineapple in midair, most definately. That is more about having a sharp blade and the operator having proper technique.

out of $700 you pay $500 for styling ("ken onion" badge) ---> "featuring the same VG-10 high-carbon steel construction as the Shun Classic line". Which is perfectly fine, as long as you know you can get "regular" Shun's for 3 x less, for exactly the same functionality/quality.

Have you priced out regular Shun sets? This is only a slight premium over regular Shun sets.
Also, if you held the two the difference is clear.

i've got 6 "steel" series knifes on one of the Amazon sales for $30-$40 a knife... pakkawood is nicer, but not $500 nicer (i also have a few "elite" series)...as for handle/blade shapes...to me it's all fluff, doesn't add to functionality or even esthetics

This is a ripoff. I got my 15 piece knife set for under $30. $575 more for less knives? LOL. There's a sucker born every minite.
Butcherboy buy them ? NO, I buy Forschner knives 95% of Pro Butchers buy Forschner. Is it a good price ? Yes, very high end Knifes. I did a price search last night, E-bay price at over $1000 shipped and that was was the best price I can find. Knifes retale for $1300 so almost 1/2 price
I also have Forschners and endorse them. They are probably the best value out there. My 8" chef's Forschner is over 25 years old, and it still holds a great edge.
Having said that - my Ken Onion designed Leek is a fine folder, and I wouldn't mind trying this set. Probably best it sold out already. Checking out the individual photos - it appears these are Damascus blades. That's a involved manufacturing process, never inexpensive.

They are not "true" damascus but rather laminated steel with a VG-10 core and softer steel "sandwiched" on the sides. This allows you to have a hard edge that is protected by a softer steel. You get the benefits of increased hardness while minimizing the change of chipping.
As far as comparing a 6" knife to the large chef knives and Santoku in this collection, there is no comparison. Pricing out equivalent sizes and styles you see a small premium for the Onions, which, IMO, as worth it for the increased efficiency and lack of fatigue.
If they aren't worth it to you, thats cool. However when you average out the 11 piece set, for knives of this caliber an average cost of ~$64 a blade is a great value.
I do not use these knives in my kitchen. However, I would like to, which is saying a lot, as the knives I do use are very nice.
tram said: CheapCheap1 said: If these super knives can cut a diamond, I will buy it... If you have diamonds to cut, what are you doing in fatwallet?. What a poor/bad logic...!!! I only meant that....if these super knives are that SHARP & HARD, I would pay for that price. Is thers any part of my previous comment I have stated that I have a diamond?
Seems like an awesome deal for those that want a nice set of knives. I'm using hand-me-down Cutcos that my dad bought in the early 70's. They still cut fine and I can still send them back to the factory for sharpening when they need it. Cutco has actually replaced 4 or 5 of them over the years for free!
coolbreeze said: Had I been able to order these my wife would have chopped me up with them when FedEx dropped them off. This is one Woot I'm glad I missed. Might I suggest the 5" Serrated Utility (DM0513) for the initial thrust, requiring the least arm strength for the deepest penetration.
The 8" Chef"(DM0500) would be a good choice for the actual chopping. The challenge with these larger sets is that there are just too many good choices.

i just picked up a ken onion chef at tj maxx for $130 (which is a little cheaper then typical eBay BIN prices). is it 10 times better then my $20 kitchen aid chefs knife? no, but i can afford it and i like using it.
chopping is a little wierd at first because it doesn't have the same rocking motion of a normal chefs knife. but it's plenty sharp and not that heavy given the size. i think the giant set is not worth it as you really only need 1-2 knives out of the set.
