i read the 360 arcade version is not compatible with original xbox games? is that just because of the lack of hdd? or is there actual hardware differences between the different skus?

Our Xbox 360 Premium (20Gb HD) just died. Anyone know if I can buy an Arcade and use the HD from the original unit? Are they paired to the box or can they be moved around?
