If you are gonna sign up for new service get it at Radio Shack. All Radio Shack's are waiving activation fee on all Sprint and T-Mobile activations. This is only good till the end of the month. remember they have no mail in rebates and they will price match advertised ads.
I've never paid an activation fee for sprint. If I can't get the point of sale representative to waive it for me, I take the unactivated phone home, call sprint customer service and have them activate it for me and waive the fee. They have never said no, especially since you are automatically committing to a 2-year agreement (just point that out to them if you have to).

Wait, sorry for being a newbie about this, but how do you get Tmobile to waive the activation fee? I'm thinking about switching to ATT, do you have any tips on getting the activation fee waive for ATT?

Huh??? No, they did not let me take a brand new phone home without purchasing it. Unactivated does not mean unpurchased. I have however bought a phone at a sprint store without activating it (in-store activation is not mandatory, e.g., if you are buying it as a gift for someone), and then called sprint customer service and had them waive the fee because I was willing to sign a 2 year agreement. Once, after having had the phone activated in store, I called customer service later and asked them to waive the fee: they did even though they didn't have to (I had no leverage at that point, they just did it because I'm a long time customer who pays my bills on time and I was polite). I would suggest the same to anyone who buys a phone from eBay or a non-retail source: don't pay the activation fee, call and negotiate (politely).
"Someone" is always willing to waive the activation fee. I purchased new phones and service at an ATT store and the manager waived the fees for all of them. I had Sprint for a short time and they also waived the fee. The fees are only there because some people don't argue; the company ends up getting some extra money. I've never paid an activation fee in my life.

I just signed up with Sprint at BB. When I got my first bill, I called up Sprint and had them waive the activation fees. I never pay activation fees either. I've always said that only suckers pay activation fees.
I never pay an activation fee. Just upgraded 4 phones to Blackberries, got all 4 fees ($72) waived without even asking. You tell them then fine, I don't want to renew my contract. They will not let your 2 year contract commitment go for $18.
people actually pay activation fees? seriously? it seems like they are just an automated nuisance to get more money out of people who don't care. you can get the fee waived in-store or on the phone, and probably even through live chat now. you just have to talk to a live person, doesn't matter how.
when i re-up my 2 yrs agreement w/sprint i was willing to paid the activation fee cuz i asked/received $100 credit to re-up agreement. i also got discount on the phone and etc. the whole 9 yards it better to ask than not to ask but dont be a leech
