This looks pretty cool. But I am a little concerned with the GPS capabilities. Notice how the sale page states: "Complimentary GPS Service" ?
I read through the owner's manual, and it seems that this phone needs to use a GPRS connection to update the GPS information. Additionally, you must supply your own memory card to hold maps, as the unit memory is only 64 MB.
So does complimentary GPS Service mean a free GPRS connection for life?
Does anyone have this phone to clarify how the GPS functions?
The hw6925 comes with an impressive three GPS options: a free copy of Pocket Streets, a 60-day trial of the NAVTEQ-based HP iPAQ Navigation Software ($129 after the trial period), or a subscription to TeleNav ($9.99/month for unlimited use).
Well for $100 really can't complain too much. After all this is a 3+ year old PDA Phone. Remember back then it was like, $600+ without a contract.
As for other ROMs for this unit... XDA has couple threads about it. This unit is also known as the "HTC Sable". Do a Google on XDA and you should find the forum dedicated to that unit with ROMs to flash. Just be careful though, there are MANY reports that flashing other ROMs actually damages the GSM radio for some strange reason thus fails the whole procedure. And it loves to be locked into the bootloader mode (which can be taken care off with some other software written by someone at XDA).
But again, it's a 3+ years old machine, Windows Mobile 5 seems a better choice for it anyway.
Has anyone's order shipped? I got a tracking # on the 26th but UPS hasn't received the package yet according to UPS.com

I put a tmobile sim card and it works fine, so it's unlocked.
But sadly, mine is hw6920, Not hw6925 as what's should be.
The difference is there's no camera.

I own the hw6945 which is identical (HP used different model numbers to differentiate retail and corporate sales).
This is a WM5 smartphone and there are no ROM images to upgrade to WM6 that I know of. WM5 works well on this device, but the screen is square 240x240 not the more typical 320x240 (or 240x320) resolution and some applications will not be visible. Don't worry about not finding software though, Opera 8.6 (browser), SPB Mobile Shell, WebIS Informant, SBSH Pocket Weather, Skype*, Pocket Streets 2006, Resco Radio, Google and Yahoo Maps work fine.
The 3"x3" display is easier to read than most cellphones and you can read the screen in sunlight by tilting it at a good reflective angle.
The phone has GSM EDGE data connectivity and the phone will tether (provide internet connectivity) to a windows laptop running the appropriate active sync software. EDGE is only a few times faster than dialup (unlike newer 3G HSDPA phones) so don't get this just for internet connections.
WIFI 802.11B works well enough.
*Skype is on edge, performance wise, and it works best with a strong WIFI signal and the wired headphones with echo suppression turned off. The phone does support a Bluetooth headset profile for cellular calls but that Bluetooth profile is not compatible with Skype or other audio applications.
2Gb miniSD cards work fine and I've heard that some 4Gb miniSD card work but not SDHC.
A-GPS is assisted GPS, the phone attempts to download orbital data from the web to speed up finding the GPS satellites. The downloaded orbital data is good for about 2 days, without it expect to wait several minutes before the GPS is functional.
I couldn't activate the GPS NavTech software that HP included. Pocket Streets works fine and you can still download free maps from Microsoft. Google and Yahoo GPS maps are fine too. HP included some optional security software that keeps data in flash memory and removable miniSD cards encrypted. I didn't keep the security software installed because re-entering a PIN-password was annoying but if you keep confidential data on your phone this should give you some piece of mind if your phone was lost.
The built-in camera is poor, similar to what you'd expect from a $75 prepaid phone.
Windows Media Player and TCPMP work well. You can download codecs to play MP3, MP4, FLV (flash) and other common audio and video files. External audio via 2.5mm socket. The USB/charging connector is proprietary.
The hw6945 has been my daily phone for almost 3 years. Compared with newer touch screen phones the hw6945 is bulkier, slower, and old looking, but being able to read large fonts on its 3" x 3" display makes me happy.
