Seriously?
Has any other software company offered a usb option before?I know, kind of a far fetched hope but maybe since Apple is all about catering to the non-tech savvy audience. Not saying that tech savvy people don't use Macs, but... okay just digging myself a deeper hole here.

I guess it would be easier to trick non-tech savvy people into buying overly expensive superfluous technology than tech savvy people.
As to whether software can be found on USB, some are like: CA Internet Security and PC Doctor 5+ (in fact it will not work unless you have the USB key plugged in). It hasn't been distributed via USB for any OS though.
Anyway, to the OP: I recommend you make it known that it's an Upgrade version in your title as well.
When I found out that the delivery date for my order was 9/1, I promptly cancelled my order and reordered with the Apple Store so that I could get it on the 28th. It's not so much that I can't wait... it's that I'd rather get it on Friday so I have all weekend to deal with any installation issues instead of getting downtime during the work week on our "mission critical" household computer.
So... because people are canceling their Amazon preorders left and right, they're dropping the price.
This is, of course, all conjecture, but it sounds good, doesn't it?
pretty sweet price. I'm on the fence... I have old photoshop and illustrator program that won't work after upgrading to snow leopard.... unless i buy CS4. *sigh*
Also, rumors say that snow leopard has antivirus scanner built in.

How old is your Photoshop and Illustrator? I did a cross-platform upgrade to CS4 when I finally broke down and got my Mac last year. If you can afford it, take the plunge and upgrade to CS4, it's well worth it.
By the rumors, it looks as though the anti-virus scanner is a limited feature, looking for only a couple trojans downloaded from specific applications. No idea if the feature would be or should be expanded. Not that Macs should need anything truly robust, as PCs do. In fact, I'm not sure if Macs even need this new feature. I love that my Mac is already not virus-prone and that it doesn't take rocket science and constant updates to keep it virus-free.
Anyways, very excited about the new release, I'm placing my order for the upgrade this afternoon. OP, Qraftee is right, there will be much benefit from editing your thread title to indicate "upgrade". It's good you've mentioned it inside the post, but it would help folks who may not have been following the Snow Leopard release.
This seems more like a software update than a new OS. They probably could have done most of this as an update, but I guess they're trying to make money from apple fans. The notable killer feature is the support for Microsoft Exchange 2007...

Anyone know if you can do an install on a blank drive with the upgrade disk? I own Leopard, but don't want to have to install 10.5 THEN 10.6 down the road...

yep, an upgrade, but a notable upgrade. Here's a good quote from Kevin, a poster on engadget...
engadget said: Rewriting code does not exempt an installation from being a "service pack." If a service pack is merely defined as a single installable package that does not change the Major version then both Windows 7 and OS 10.6 are service packs.
For the most part, every update contains lots of "rewrites" to the code. The larger the update, the greater the number of rewrites. Service Packs for Windows tend to be large rewrites of core code and add functionality. Mac OS 10.x packages tend to be similar in scope but are not offered for free.
I would say that unless there is a major revision to the way that the kernel and filesystem operate, then we cannot call a new OS anything other than a service pack. This is what the jump from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 was and Mac OS 9 to Mac OSX was. Since Windows 7 merely tweeks the kernel and maintains the NT filesystem, then it is just an iterative update. Mac OS 10.6 tunes the kernel and maintains the filesystem, so it too is an interative release.
To gauge the value of either Windows 7 or Mac OS 10.6 by price alone is stupid. You must judge it based on the improvements and fixes that the respective operating system brings to the table. Max OS 10.6 is bringing a tuned OS but no significant UI changes, so its value is relatively small. Windows 7 brings substantial UI improvements and fixes many of the Vista/XP issues. For a Windows user, Windows 7 represents a significant change while for a Mac user 10.6 represents a minimal change. Thus, both seem priced accordingly.
As an aside, Mac OS 10.6 does have one change that is larger than Windows 7 when you consider that 10.6 completely drops support for non-intel based chips. This, to me, represents the largest change and causes me to lose a great deal of respect for Apple. But that's just because backwards compatibility is very important to me. Windows, for better or for worse, has always attempted to maintain backwards compatibility, and XP Mode is no exception. I hope this presents a clear argument why the service pack argument is kinda moot. Thanks for reading!

I have CS2 That sucks it won't work with Snow Leopard. CS2 is a good version! I still have it on my PC (which is collecting dust). I still like it, but having used CS4 much of the past several months I hate going back (isn't that always how it goes?). Actually, even CS3 is a bit of a pain in certain respects now (at least for PhotoShop).
FYI, just to make things more interesting: I noticed Adobe is having a $100 off upgrade of Creative Suite deal until August 31. I *think* that's only Creative Suite packages, not individual software, though, so I'm not sure if it would apply for you.
Back to our regularly scheduled topic....
Nice find on the engadget quote. Not something I had thought much about before, but good information to know.

LOL @ "mission critical" household computer. Are you running network appliances like a toaster, refrigerator, and coffee machine that could make your breakfast production come to a screeching halt?!

Darn, I figured they never discount any Apple stuff so I ordered direct from Apple a few days ago. Free shipping but I had to pay tax. Now Amazon would save me both tax and $4 on the upgrade. Too late to cancel at Apple, it's already shipped out. At least I can hope that maybe I'll get it sooner than ordering from Amazon. Sometimes you just can't win for trying but I did get some CashBack at Apple that I can't get at Amazon.

SL is almost a complete rewrite in Cocoa. It was a huge task that had to be done to push Macs toward 64bit. From the start Apple said the primary goal of SL is performance, not enhancements. Its similar to what M$ is doing with Windows 7, which is really Vista done right except that Vista was always junk and 10.5 was pretty solid, if bloated with Carbon code. Well there is one other difference. Apple is charging 10.5 owners $29 at any time they want to upgrade. M$ offered XP and Vista owners a month a brief window this summer to buy W7 for $50. Of course those that missed out will have to pay $120 when it ships in Oct.

Price now up to $25 so you qualify for free shipping without adding an extra $0.50 item.
dpid said: rhumbaclave said: Do you think Amazon will ship tonight if we select overnight?
not sure, but if you want it by friday, why not just buy it from apple where they guarantee it by friday for $4 more?
Especially since 1 day shipping adds an extra $17.98 to the total! Unless, of course, you have Prime, which will add $3.99 instead, thereby saving an entire penny vs. Apple

Just a bit of an update on how SUPER the shipping is at Amazon. So I pre-ordered mine about 8 minutes after I last posted here (Wednesday, August 26, 2009 12:27 PM). First Amazon estimated it would ship on Sept 1 (Tuesday) and arrive a week later. Well, as it turns out, it shipped sometime yesterday (Saturday) and should be in my hands by Wednesday. No tax, no shipping, not too long a wait. Good times!

DisplayPort is a standard. It's going to replace DVI within the next few years. It's from VESA, not just something Apple cooked up.
Also, you can install Snow Leopard without having Leopard installed. I installed onto a blank external hard drive first to test it out, only hiccup is it has to be GUID, not another partition scheme.
