Are they comparing it to a seperate mouse/keyboard combo ? Or are they comparing it to keyboards with built in touchpads ? There are not that many good ones out there.

Actually, the build quality on it is exceptional. You'd be really hard pressed to find anything that comes close. They did however choose to make some rather odd decisions. For example, the FN button can't be made to work in a toggle mode - you always have to hold it down. The touchpad is circular and tiny and placed in an odd spot. I would have put a rectangular touchpad directly below the spacebar like most laptops have. I would have kept the touch wheel thing and made it work like an iPod's touch disk. I also had some issues getting it to go to sleep and wake back up. My motherboard doesn't have wake-on-usb or something. Mediocre price.
Actually its a good HTPC keyboard, but I get the random BT disconnects too. A power cycle normally cures it. Is this a well-known issue because I figured it was something in my environment/setup?

Try the mini version, I think the regular sized one is too big for HTPC use. DiNovo Mini

If you've got an iphone or touch this is the solution
I have two of them on my bedroom and living room media center, and they are perfect for HTPC use. The cursor pad is also a mouse, it has dedicated media center buttons, it is backlit and it runs for months off a single charge. The only downside as mentioned earlier is its insane price.

I have seen that KB before and always assume since it is listed as a wireless KB and mouse, there was no other pointing option, I never noticed the little scroll pad before.
Is that tiny pad really usable in place of a mouse or is it touchy like the stick on the MCE KB?

Logitech MX5000 has the best zoom feature for 10 foot readable ever. Have a separate mouse and get the MX5000 it is worth it
Yes! I have the non-pro (previous) version of this keyboard. Never had any problems with mine and works great about 10 feet away. Don't let the PS3 thing fool you. It works just fine for PC's. You can find refurbs for around $30-40.
