Next Monday, ZoneAlarm plans to announce that it will give away free licenses to its ZoneAlarm Pro firewall software on "Patch Tuesday," or Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The free giveaway will take place on line for 24 hours, at ZoneAlarm's Web site.
ZoneAlarm Pro is a subset of ZoneAlarm's security services, a step up from its free firewall but less protection than its ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 suite offers. ZoneAlarm Pro includes the two-way firewall, download monitoring, anti-phishing protection, plus a couple of advanced features: OSFirewall, which looks for changes in the OS that might have been missed by an antivirus program, and credit monitoring with the three major credit bureaus. The latter feature typically comes with a year's subscription.
Just a note, They have taken out the Anti-spyware, malware portion of this software and now rely on the forcefield browser security features for spy/malware.
It is now basic free Zone Alarm Firewall + Forcefield. but you could add a different program for your anti-spyware like MS essential.
From ZA/Checkpoint. Why does Pro no longer include Anti-Spyware?
The consistent feedback we get from ZoneAlarm Pro customers is that they want a streamlined product that focuses purely on prevention and firewall. In other words, Pro should only be about keeping the computer healthy by preventing infection in the first place while other security (anti-virus and anti-spyware) is focused on providing a cure after getting infected.
So to serve our customers who have a need for a streamlined high-end firewall product to use with an existing antivirus/anti-malware program, we strengthened our firewall and prevention technologies and took out anti-spyware.
To improve our prevention technologies, we focused on the browser where over 1/3 of all attacks now start, adding Download Protection (with new, unique heuristics and advanced scan that test runs the program in a safe environment) and Anti-Phishing (signature and heuristic protection). We also enhanced our firewall, adding protection against new, modern attacks that other firewalls miss like raw disk access, timing, and service control attacks.

That leaves 2/3 unprotected!
This a Firewall product not an "Internet Security" suite. They also have other product lines that cover the other aspects that you cite that this product does not.
How's ZA these days? I stopped using it after it gave me random BSOD and switched to Sunbelt Personal Firewall. I've been loving sunbelt ever since. It never hurts to look into software again, but if anyone would like to comment on ZA, I would appreciate it.

ZA is much worse than Norton in terms of memory (rem) consumption. You might consider a new free av from Microsoft.

I disagree...Norton sucks Comparing ZA Pro and NIS 2009 - ZA Pro is MUCH more bloated. Startup times for computers are vastly increased with ZA Pro installed.
I still run ZA Free on a couple PCs. Are the updates limited on this Pro version? Does it come with a year or updates and then you have to buy a renewal for Pro updates after that? How does it work? I'd rather not upgrade for free only to have to downgrade again if they start charging for updates for this free version.

I see that Sunbelt has a free firewall product. How is it compared to Comodo?
I was using ZA, but it would not allow my laptop to stay online.

You do not have a clue. NIS 2009 and NIS 2010 are WONDERFUL programs. Unless you have used either one, please refrain from commenting in the way that you have. The Norton that you may have used in the past is nothing like the current offering from them. Nothing at all. I used to say that Norton sucked also. That was until I tried NIS 2009.

you guys act like we're still in 1998, using 256 MB of RAM. if this program uses a lot of ram then it is justified the 6gb of ram i have in my computer.
I've been using window's firewall for a while, since ZA just kept getting bigger and slower with every update. What's the best one that doesn't compromise protection while staying lean & fast?

I dont disagree NIS 2009/10 are good, but they are not FREE either! ZA Pro is free and meets my needs. My core2duo can handle ZA's slowness.

Norton Internet Security 2010, Free For 180 Days
IMHO Norton Internet Security and 360, along with ESET Security, are the 3 best security suites. If you haven't tried NIS 09 or 10, please don't knock Norton because of older bloatware. It is now lean and fast, and doesn't slow down your computer like older versions.

This feature alone is worth giving it a try anyway.
FREE one year services with your ZoneAlarm purchase: • 1 Bureau Credit Monitoring Service - "Good Start" Identity Guard program - ($59.95 retail value) • Daily credit file monitoring provided by Equifax • Email alerts of any suspicious activity • Toll-free access to Credit Education Specialists • Identity Theft Recovery Unit support
I just got an email from ZoneAlarm on this deal. Fine print at the bottom... Important Details of the 24 Hour Offer This offer is valid for 24 hours (October 13, 2009 6am PST to October 14, 2009 6am PST) License valid for one year (10/13/09 to 10/14/10). License valid for up to 3 PCs. This offer is valid for new customers only. Limit one per customer. Credit card required for verification
I have been using AVG antivir and ZoneAlarm - but the boot up time is 2 minutes. I am thinking about switching to Comodo internet security since it has both the firewall and antivirus and is FREE. What are the issues / problems with Comodo?

what is the meaning of new customer?
new customer to ZoneAlarm Pro firewall 2010 or new customer to their site?
