How does this compare to the old thinkpads? The new designations confuse me. T used to mean top quality and R was flimsier, lower quality. How would this compare to say a T43?

Thanks OP. I had to scoop one up for my mom for her b-day!
This is part of their relatively new "value" line of products where they're building to a price point rather than to a spec. It does not have the "bulletproof" reputation of the T-XX's.
That said, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with it, just that it is likely more comparable to a more traditional Dell or HP than the older IBM or Lenovo T-XX notebooks.
Thanks pal. Still seems like a good deal--does it have the specs to run 7 ok or will it chug along?

I agree, the Lenovo's normal line does not have the bulletproof reputation of their Thinkpad line. Lenovo still makes Thinkpads and they still have the R, T series as well as the SL (small business) and W series (high end). Based on the research I've done the SL are not built as well as the T series. The W series are built better than the T series.
I would check out their outlets for good deals on the T-61 series. My sister has one she bought from the outlet and the build quality, feel and workmanship blow away the Dell Inspiron that she previously had.
Yes, I'm a past owner of a T42, T43, and was given an R61. The Ts are amazing. The R61 had a few issues with components but has been basically solid.

I pulled the trigger. Read some info first. Consensus appears to be that it is a good laptop for the money, albeit with a non-standard keyboard layout that confuses people who aren't into lenovos and a flimsy plastic feeling case. It's under 6 pounds, btw. Some people complain about it lagging, so a clean install and removal of the Lenovo/ibm redundant programs (like wifi) may be the order of the day.
Difference, CPU, Intel v.s. AMD; Memory, DDR3 v.s. DDR2; Video card, Intel integrated video v.s. ATI Radeon HD 4200 w/128MB; Card reader, No v.s. Yes; Brand name, Lenovo v.s. Compaq... Configuration-wise, they are close. but the rebate + tax, and the experience with Compaq, led me towards Lenovo. I bought it for my dad. He doesn't need anything fancy, just something stable and working. For that price, I think it's decent one.
P.S. One thing I would really want on the Lenovo, it's an HDMI out port. But it doesn't have BR driver anyway, I guess it doesn't matter that much.
looks pretty good, comparable to the MSI deal from TigerDirect/CircuitCity.com, maybe better. don't know how a 1.8GHz Dual Core Celeron (T3000) w/NVIDIA GeForce 8200M for video compares to a 2.1GHz dual-core Pentium (T4300) with integrated graphics.
Sold Out. I got the email notification and checked it out in morning but got sidetracked and ... I need 2 inexpensive laptops (prefer under 400. No Celeron.). any recommendations?

There will be another deal in a day or two, just wait it out. Yesterday was MSI today was Lenovo
