Frys has a combo of the Core i5-750 Processor + Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R Motherboard for $220 - $20MIR = $200. In-store only. No rainchecks or substitutions.
1. This deal: Intel Core i5 750 Processor + Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R Motherboard $200AR @ Fry's B&M 2. Core i7 920 processor $199.99 at Microcenter + a mobo from Newegg 3. Core i7 860 Processor $229.00 at Microcenter + a mobo from Newegg 4. Sticking to my old Abit IP35 Pro motherboard and upgrading the Intel core 2 quad Q9550 for $169.99 at Microcenter
Fry's offer is a good deal. Unfortunately, I'm the 99.xx% of the population that does not have a Fry's B&M. This week ordered components for 2x system builds - Daughter's desktop and Windows Home server for our local network. Went with AMD/Gigabyte for best bang for the dollar ... but my combination at Newegg only $20 cheaper than this deal . For the past couple of months, deal(s) like above are always restricted to B&M sales only. I'm getting the feeling Fry's is using use / our forums / Internet as a "Free National Advertising" podium . We keep their name, excellent deals for everyone to read ... but they limit their exposure to a very small market. Good deal for the locals ... better deal for Fry's.
My kid wants a new computer for gaming. Is this a good start?

Awesome start.
Funny that I've been pining for one of those Microcenter processor deals, and we have none here. But this popped up so I ran out immediately and got one. Sweet deal indeed!

Yes, where are finding an Intel core 2 quad Q9550 for $169.99? I can't even find it listed at Microcenter.
What you have to do is choose your store at the very top, then browse by processors and it will show up. I believe it is an instore pickup and not for delivery that is why you don't see it if you just search for processors. I did this for the Houston store and they have 21 processors that show up vs just 5-6 when I don't choose a store.

If you don't live near a Fry's, just as a tip, I've learned to always call before you head out to try and get their latest good deal on a mobo/cpu combo.
The last two times I went to Fry's in Chicago to get their best deal on a mobo/CPU combo, I was told that they sold out very soon after they opened the day the sale started as they only had *5* total units available. Now, that wouldn't be bad if there were a lot of Fry's in there area, but for only one store servicing a huge area? That's just a loss leader to try and get people in the store.
While they can of course do that, it's crap like that that is making me want to never shop at Fry's again, despite their awesome deals.

I have been so frustrated with Fry's as of late with the obvious ads with decent deals and when you get to the store they say well we only got 4 of those combos in, so frustrated in fact that I finally stopped to talk to the customer service manager to complain - their Friday ad runs all week and yet they only got 4 bundles that they advertised? (I was looking for the Corei7 860/ASUS Combo). Just know that customer service can and will give rainchecks on advertised combos in their ads though I have noted that on the combos advertised lately they either have very few in stock to begin with, or the ones they do have only have motherboards that have been returned.

For the Q9550 you already have DDR2 RAM installed. The i5 and i7 need DDR3, an additional $80-$100+.

Let's see, they are at or near San Diego, LA, San Fran, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Houston,Sacramento, Atlanta (Duluth) and several other cities. So, I'm going with less than 89 percent.

Closest I got to that was using LA County, and the TX Metroplexes. I didn't count SanFran, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, or Atlanta, although they would only buy you a few percentage points, if even (chicago, I think, is the only significant lone city). I actually got interested in the numbers because I get tired of people saying fry's b&m posts are a waste of time. I would love to see your numbers regarding people living within a reasonable traveling time of a frys. That would shut them up, shirley.

Just some quick pop numbers from the last Metropolitan Area Wiki -- I figure that's close enough to drive. I come with over 65 Million people so at least 20% of the US poplulation

Intel Core i5 750 Processor vs. Core i7 920 processor
This mobo is so picky with Memory. The light blue color slot is not picking up the memory. I checked with Corsair TW3X2G1600C9DHX G and Crucial BL2KIT12864BA1608. Anyone noticed that issue or is it just me.

I had similar issue. It is solved by: Try install only one module on the white slot (second slot from CPU), see if it can boot. Then add another module to the other white slot (4th slot from CPU), see if it can boot. The add to the blue slots if you have more.

Thanks. Solved the problem. It is mentioned in the manual as well. We have to install the Memory in two white slots and then install the rest in Blue slot. Since i have only two modules so installed in blue slot instead of white slot. So if you have only two modules then intall in white slot instead of blue. Hope this helps for someone. Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate your help.
efficacyman said: bah why can't microcenter run similar deals... bring fry's to mN!
Microcenter caters to people who want enormous selection of sometimes-obscure parts for system builds, etc. and aren't that concerned about price. Fry's caters primarily to people who are price conscious.

I found out too late this thing doesn't have a firewire port, like the cheaper and more expensive Gigabyte models do. Wouldn't matter to most people, but I don't want to add on a card. Guess I'll throw it on eBay and keep the CPU...
Anybody knows when this deal officially expires? Was thinking of trying my luck in Chicago (Though I'm 99% sure that they are out of stock, but I've to go to the store any way for some other stuff).
