This is a great combo price if you want a Quad Core processor and have some DDR2 lying around. However, if you don't have DDR2 available and are going to be buying memory for your new build, would recommend the other combo with Ci5 for $50 more.
Sigh. Just once I'd like to be able to get in on a Fry's B&M deal. Seeing as I just bought a Q8200, found out it wouldn't work in my board, had to buy a NEW board... this deal would have saved me over 100$. (done whining)

How does this compare to the e8400 deal from last week? Is there a big enough performace difference to pay the extra $30 bucks? I ask because I first limited myself to 75 bucks from a e7200 deal I got in on,, then said what the heck up paid 100 for the e7500 deal and then said what the heck again and went up to the e8400 deal. So now do I stop there or take one last leap and and finally assemble my system???
the q8400 is a quad cpu, the e8400 is only a dual core. If you do a lot of video encoding or run any kind of multi-threaded apps, the $30 is well worth it.
Also, this combo comes with a P45 chipset based MB. Don't remember the MB in the E8400 combo.
If the MB is not a big issue, then a Quad core won't get you much performance except for in Videa encoding.

The e8400 deal had a P43 motherboard. I want to make a htpc out of this, so if that's the case which of the two would be the better choice? I personally won't be editing graphics or anything,,, ripping (backing up) dvds probably, but not much more than that...
I don't think there is much difference between P43 and the P45 chipsets. As far as the CPUs are concerned, the only place where a Quad core is superior in applications is video encoding and any distributed computing programs such as FAH, etc. I would probably stay with E8400 since the C2D/C2Q technologies are pretty much on the way out with the Ci7 and Ci5 now coming down in prices. If I was to spend more money, I would recommend going to the next platform, except that I have DDR2 lying around and don't want to spend money on DDR3. And this C2Q based system will be used for FAH computing, therefore, I am spending the extra $30.

Like you, I have a bunch of ddr2 memory laying around. That's what is stoping me from looking at the Ci5 deal. But then like you said, both of these are on their way out and so is the C2Q going to keep me up to date for longer? In that case, is the extra $30 worth it?

Bought two of these. Good price considering the Q8400 CPU is $160 on Newegg.com.
Unfortunately, it appears that the first board I tried is DOA. I set it up on a table, trying two different power supplies (including a new 550W Antec Basiq) and a known-good video card. These boards have a lot of DOA reports on Newegg.com.
