lately, Fry's has been advertising Major Brand Name for new items, maybe as a way to get around the "price too low to be advertised" situation with some manufacturers.

When I bought a HD at Fry's a few weeks back, the sales guy had to generate a purchase order on his computer. I then took that to the check-out where they pulled the item and sold it to me. That would probably let them control sales to some extent. For items on regular display, there's not much they could do to prevent you from walking back in and buying more.
I go back in the store and buy an item again and use a different payment method. Works all the time.

They have 8MB cache version of WD last time. And this time is 32MB Cache. If the brand is good, maybe need to swap it out. Only installed the W7 without activation, so still have chance to do so...
It was WD green drive in OEM bag - no wires, etc. I didn't get is as it's only 5.4k rpm even though WD claims it's 7.2k rpm. OK for data hard drive and not so good for main drive for OS and programs.
BTW - Fry 3 weeks ago also had full retail Seagate 1TB 7.2k rpm for $69.99.

There are only two reasons they generate a purchase order. First is for any item in the cage, they have to have a purchase order to get it out. The second is so the salesman can get a commission or other kind of recognition.
They could in theory restrict number of units sold with this method, but in practice they don't. Cause if they did, you'd just take your coworkers to lunch and have them all buy one and sell it to you.

Got one: WD10EADS-00M2B0 manufactured 09/2009 And yes, it looks it's a 2 platter! Warranty good until 10/02/2012, so 3 years. ...nice, my search is finally over

Sounds like same deal from 3 weeks ago.

You know, I just went out to Xbit labs and had a look at the current batch of 1 and 2 TB drives vs 2+ year old technology. Right now, I am running pre-2007 <250GB 7200rpm hard drives in my systems. It turns out that even at 5400rpm, these drives are faster than the 7200rpm disks that I am currently running.
Found at the Milton/Alpharetta (Atlanta) Fry's. There were a few people buying them at the time.

Last weekend in ATL, this deal was a Hitachi 7200 RPM Drive with a 3 year warranty. It is good deal @ 59.00 and is generally as quiet as the other 750gb Western Digital blue drive in the same PC.

Fry's Alpharetta, GA stated it is a WD Caviar Green, 1TB 32MB Cache.
the ad wasn't on the newspaper flyers, and the only terabyte drive that they were selling for $59 came with a one year warranty... it was a green drive, but with a crappy warranty like that, i'm not pulling the trigger.
In what has been typical results for me when purchasing WD drives, mine died (literally) within seconds of being installed. I don't know why I keep trying their junk.
For those that had better results, I would advise not installing anything important on this. Seems like it's a POS.
