I was going to wait until it got closer to Thanksgiving to pick this up, but I'm willing to pay $429, especially since the EX485 isn't much cheaper and the EX487 is more expensive ($600+) for some reason

$429 is a good price. I just bought it for $475, and that was also a good price (this is the new model that is hardly on sale out there yet).
Why to buy this one, instead of the EX495?? Because you can buy and E6300 processor for $75 and make it more powerful... (That voids your warranty though, but it is an easy upgrade...)
These MediaSmart servers are pretty cool. I got the EX470 from Newegg when they were selling the refurbs. I have transferred all of my music, video, pictures while it'll stripe it across all of the spindles (folder duplication they call it). Buy this and get a few of those 59 dollar 1TB drives from Fry's and you're set!

"1.0 TB SATA 7200 RPM hard drive; 3 open expansion bays for Hard drives - (Total Capacity 9TB)"
Anyone know how they come up with 9TB Total Capacity? 9TB divided by 4 drives = 2.25TB per drive But, how can that be? Largest drive available today is 2TB.

"I can attest to the E6300 running cooler than the stock 490 Celeron. It actually uses less power at idle.
Using the stock 490 Celeron I recorded the following results: 48C (min) 71C (max) - used Core Temp to monitor min and max temperatures under Prime95 44W (idle) 54W (full load) - used Kill A Watt and I am running two drives (stock 1TB and 750GB WD)
The stock Celeron ran Prime95 extremely slow perhaps because the Celeron has very little cache memory.
Replacing the stock Celeron with a E6300 yielded the following results: 32C (min) 65 (max) - Ran 90 min Prime95 test, used Arctic Silver 42W (idle) and 70W (full load)"
"It was a simple drop-in and didn't require any BIOS tweaking (at least in my case)."

You can think of a NAS as a simple external hard drive that hooks up to your network. The Mediasmart is a Windows Home Server appliance. It has all the function of a NAS, and more. It's basically a full blown computer that is dedicated to storage and back up. You can configure it to automatically back up all your computers in your home.
