I almost bought this at Best Buy yesterday... looked on line today and they had dropped from $599.00 to $499.00..already have it installed. Store still had $599. but did the match thing.
Not bad. You can get the newer P42X1 for about the same or a little less if you want to jump through Cash Back and Gift Card hoops. But not a bad deal and still a very good set.
Good GOD! Another cheap 720p Plasma... you guys are killing me. These things are a dime a dozen. There was just a deal on a 50" for $100 more... please already...

is Sharp for $899 as of today the best deal on a 52" 1080P? I bougth a Panasonic 42 inch 720p 3 years ago and paid 899 in Black friday. I was not aware of Fatwallet and the only best deal in town then was a 50" same specs for $1099 that a friend bought without sharing with us... It was not posted anywhere, He found out in the cash register that day. Still I complain that friends should have called immediatelly to stop the rest from buying the 42. (Our group of friends were all buying TVs that year) Now Fatwallet are my new shopping friends I know, long story... who cares about my friends!! Please try to answer my question! I will not buy any less than 52" 1080P

This is a great tv if you watch mostly SD material from a quality source.
I feel like I'm trashing all these cheap TC-P42C1 threads but IMHO spend the extra $30 a buy the TC-P42X1 at Dell. It offers higher contrast ratio, 30,000:1, Anti-Reflective coating, 3 HDMI instead of 2, etc......
How did you get 5% CB? From FatWallet, I am only seeing that it's at 1%:

I thought the whole 1080p v. 720p was accpeted as another scam designed to separate a fool from his money b/c the difference in picture quality is not really noticeable (unless you're a game or something like that). Am I wrong about this?
Also, I heard the same thing about LED TV's vs. LCDs. Tekky geeks, please fill me in...
Thanks for posting. I ordered it late last night for pick up at a local BB. The TV is for my in-laws, who currently use a 19" on the other side of the room. They don't need 1080p. Nor do I believe anyone needs 1080p on this size TV unless you are going to use it for a gaming monitor RIGHT in front of you. But then, you're probably better off with an LCD to help avoid burn in from looking at the same game graphics in the corner of your screen all night, every night
I think it's a good price on a good TV. I agree with a previous poster that the Dell one might be better for some for the couple bucks more. But this TV will do nicely for the in-laws.
Oh, and there might yet be some better deals come BF. There probably will. But personally I don't plan to do the all night thing to save a few bucks more. I wager that the price won't be a whole lot less for a similar TV. Particularly if you're going to keep it name brand.

I have the 50" version of the TV and it's great. Good find.

About the whole 720p vs 1080p. Yeah for the most part, regular HD TV viewing is good on a 720p since most networks don't send out a 1080p signal. The real difference however comes from the actual set, and in my opinion plasmas generally have a lot better picture quality than an LCD.
Of course, this all changes when you are talking about gaming and even then most games don't send out 1080p textures so you don't get the full use of your TV set even in that area.
But Bluray will do full 1080p, so that is the really the only area where you'd utilize your 1080p set.

At this size, at the recommended viewing distance, it doesn't matter. If you sit 5' away, then you might notice a screen door effect. Not really an issue for normal viewing.
This is a decent calculator for viewing distance vs screen size, and this is a good one for determining 720p/1080p distances.
As for LED, IMO it's not the right time. Price and features vs LCD and plasma isn't worth it. Plasma is your FW-friendly HDTV for now and the forseeable future.

Gees Matt. Give it a rest already. We get it, you don't like Panny Plasmas. Quit making yourself look like an a$$ by threadcrapping every post.

For GOD'S SAKE, man, show me where to get 12 for $0.10! I will plaster my walls with them!
Oh, I have the X1 of this model, it was worth every penny of $600, and I sit REEEEAL close and play games on it, too. Totally awesome TV for the bucks.

Just a data point guys - I bought this TV (older model actually, but 720p) over a year ago when BB had a great deal on it, and I love the TV - great picture. I have comcast, Xbox360 and use DVDs (no blu ray), so I don't care for 1080p (some games do support 1080p now, but not a big deal for me)...This is a great TV, and a good deal at $500....don't listen to the LCD and 1080p nazis - think about how far you will be sitting from the TV, and your picture sources...use your savings to buy something else like a home theater system.
Frys had it here in DFW last weekend for that price. I got this TV a little over a month ago as an exchange for a Dynex I purchased in January that they couldn't fix. I'm glad that I got the Panasonic, was thinking of upgrading the bedroom tv from a 32" to something bigger so I might be going back to best buy.
I have heard that some old Plasma Tv's do have a problem with Burn-in, but according to the tech specs this plasma has Auto Phosphor Aging Compensation to Avoid Burn-In.
Not sure how good that technology is to avoid burn-in, but is sure is reassuring when you are making a decision between a plasma and a LCD Tv.
Picked one up earlier today, I checked out a couple of Digital Tv stations, and so far the picture is superb.
By the way, color saturation and blacks look incredible.
Another thing I want to add is that this puts out 2,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, most of the new lcd's only put out 150,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.
ragar- you do realize that contrast ratio numbers from manufacturers are virtually meaningless. There is no industry standard method of measuring it, every one does their own fudging.
