I'm very confused with all the car seat options. We have our 10 month old who's only 17lbs and come january, we don't know what type of car seat to get for him. should it one of those convertible seats or booster seat?
at present, we have a britax infant seat which is great.
so, for the next upgrade, should we buy a convertible seat which will last us 5 yrs or a booster seat?

i'm majorly confused what type of seats will last us how long and what exactly should we be looking at.
since we have two cars, whatever I buy, I will have to buy qty 2 and ideally, I would like to not pay more than $200/seat......or not more than $150/seat....
any suggestions would be appreciated

We bought our 12mo the Britax Roundabout because it was rated the best by a bunch of groups. I can also attest to it's rating because we totalled our Acura MDX. I now have back problems, my wife received a broken wrist but my son escaped unscathed. He has a very slight bruise around her colarbone. We were so happy that we bought the exact same seat after the accident (not supposed to reuse a seat that has been in an accident).

We bought both on eBay and took advantage of Cash Back. Total for the 2nd was like $130 shipped.

My son is now almost 19mo and we're starting to look into boosters. It's probably going to be another 12 months before we buy one but I always keep an eye open The seat you're looking at should have a height & weight range so just make sure you get what is appropriate.

I also highly recommend the following book: Baby Bargains

Graco Nautilus is a great choice. I liked that seat a lot for it's price, function and how long it can last; up to 100lb. However, we decided on Britax Frontier Booster instead, because my son is big. And we wanted to keep him in harness longer after I saw this

You should bring your son to baby store and try it out, and some store (like babyRus), will even let you take it to your car to try it out.

I currently have Britax Marathon Convertible Car Seat and Britax Regent Youth Car Seat.

Keep your child rear facing untill 35lbs. Your child will swim in a booster at this point - they are geared more towards the 3/4 and up kids. These are all GREAT and highly recommended seats:

http://www.amazon.com/Britax-Marathon-Convertible-Seat-Onyx/dp/B...

http://www.amazon.com/Evenflo-Triumph-Advance-Convertible-Seat/d...

http://www.amazon.com/First-Years-True-Convertible-Monet/dp/B000...

I have all three of these and personally, if I wanted to spend as little as possible for a WONDERFUL seat - I'd go with the triumph advance. Other than the Graco my ride 65 - skip the others like the comfort sport, etc. I'd also stay away from the alpha omegas. A cosco scenera is a great, very inexpensive seat as well, but doesn't have all the bells and whistles. One last good one is the uptown or avenue - made by safety first. The last two I mentioned have lower harness heights so they won't last quite as long as the others.

The boosters that were mentioned - Graco and Britax - are both wonderful seats but way too big for your child right now regardless of what the manufacturer says about weight.

@gordita - Personally I would get a Roundabout and keep your child in the Roundabout until he's at the weight limit- 40 lbs, or the height limit, whatever comes first. Using all the helpful hints from fellow FW-ers, you can pick up a Roundabout for less than $150. At that point he will be ready for the Nautilus which is forward facing only and keeps your child harnessed until 65 lbs. The Nautilus is definitely a seat for a bigger 3 year old or 4 year old, not appropriate for use at 20 lbs IMO. Over 65 lbs the Nautilus turns into a high back booster and then later, to a seat-only booster to 100 lbs. This is exactly what we did and we've been really happy with the Roundabout and so far, really happy with the Nautilus. In our state we need a child seat or booster until age 8. We are hoping the Nautilus will be the last child seat/booster we need to buy!
