Product Description
Style Name: Refurbished Logitech Harmony 890
From the Manufacturer
Imagine… controlling all your devices using only one remote - without a direct line of sight to the components! With the Harmony 890 Remote, you can wirelessly control your home entertainment system while hiding all those unsightly wires and components behind cabinet doors or a wall.

Logitech's Harmony 890, an upgrade to the Harmony 880 remote control, uses both radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) wireless signals to deliver powerful complete control of your home-entertainment system that may be hidden behind cabinets. With a wireless range of up to 100 feet, the Harmony 890 remote sends RF commands to a wireless receiver, which then blasts infrared signals to the components. The Harmony 890 remote makes universal control for home entertainment and advanced lighting systems simple.

Using Your Harmony Remote

1. Easy to set up:
Just connect your Harmony remote to your computer and the Web wizard walks you step-by-step through a simple set up. Enter the model numbers of your components, then answer a few easy questions about how you "Watch TV" or "Watch a DVD." Harmony lets you control even the most complex system without the hassle of programming complicated macros.

2. Easy to use:
The Harmony Remote is the world's only remote with Smart State Technology®. Simply press an Activity button, such as "Watch TV" or "Listen to Music," and your Harmony Remote automatically sets up each of the devices required for that activity.

3. Easy to get help:
With the Harmony remote, you don't have to know anything about your entertainment system to operate it. No sound? No picture? No problem! There's even a handy "HELP" button to guide you through simple troubleshooting and get you back in control.

4. Never out of date:
The Harmony device database includes 5,000+ manufacturers and 175,000+ devices, everything from HDTVs to DVRs, VCRs to lighting controls. It's constantly updated with new components and fine-tuned settings, so your remote will never be out-of-date.

I was talking about refurb. in general.
I am going to bed good note all....

I've had this remote before and wasn't thrilled with it's speed as well as it's build quality.

However, for $100 you are getting a ton of functionality (more specifically, the RF capability). Because of that, I ordered one again...

The remote is great at what it does but my biggest complaint is the ergonomics. It just isn't comfortable to use, even when just flipping channels. The RF feature is nice, but won't control things like your satellite box (since they use a proprietary RF format).

only w/rf units - ?! - or it could be extended?

Is this basically the same as the 880, but with RF added? What do you guys have that uses RF technology?

Dead

Sold out at this price.

Back in stock - just ordered one.

Yes, same as 880 with RF. I have one in my living room and hide all electronics in the closet behind the wall - with the RF it controls my TV, receiver, TiVo, Xbox HDDVD, Media Center PC all with no wires visible. It uses transmitters to convert the RF to infrared.

same. i also use the (limited) Z-wave interoperability. i paid $120 used on eBay for an 890 and extender.. so this seems pretty warm

some of the buttons are a bit oddly shaped, like the channel and volume up and down, not very finger friendly, sometimes takes looking at the remote to make sure you arent pressing the right 'sliver' of the button array overall, no complaints as ive gotten to know the remote now and i use the 5-way more than the actual channel buttons.

satellite receivers are the most common rf capable devices - but it would be nice if you cod extend to anything !

These do not work with the proprietary RF communication of the sat boxes either. It solely communicates with an RF extender box, that then breaks out into traditional IR sensors you place in front of any devices you want to control via RF. so essentially you can extend it onto anything that accepts RF commands. You can even use multiple RF extenders if you have devices spread about.

Not surprised it sold out so quickly. The high end Harmony remotes are overpriced to begin with, so that steep of a discount makes it very worthwhile.

Does anyone know if this works on garage door openers?

My kids always leave the garage door open.

It would be nice to be able to use this remote to close the door from my living room.

...and have the kids accidentally open it?

Nope. RF is only to the box that you place within range of IR components. Kind of like an extender.

I've had the harmony 550 for a year and the back light is out which is really annoying. I'm getting the 890 hoping it will be an improvement.

Thank OP.

I have one of these which I purchased new, however the LCD went weird after 1-2 years, but only for a couple weeks. The screen would lose the icons or text, but all buttons would still work. I also might get streaks or blotches of messed up icons/text. Pulling the battery would fix it, however it was happening almost daily. I checked in with Logitech, and the warranty is only a year on these very expensive remotes. They also told me there was not a repair service available for the 890 as well, so I was pretty much out of luck. Well, I think the remote sensed that it was about to go into the trash because it started behaving again and it has been fine for at least a month. I wasn't impressed with Logitech's inability to service this device despite it seeming to have fixed itself. I'm worried for when the time does come because it will be very costly, but less costly with OPs $100 refurb find. Still, makes me nervous...

Almost pulled the trigger on a backup, but will hope this deal comes back when it does give up the ghost.

Just FYI, if you don't want the RF extender, it can bring $30+ on eBay to lower your cost.

I use this remote RF extender, it's pretty cool. Stick a battery transmitter in any remote (I use a Logitech IR remote), and it converts the IR to RF, which goes to a base station. The base station then transmits the IR equivalent to the devices. I have all of my equipment in a cabinet, it works great.

It works with my Satellite (DISH 622) box and DVR, but not directly via RF. It converts the signal, and sends to my 622 via the base station.

Nothing like a football watching, sweaty ball sack scratching soaked, used remote for $100.

Great price. In for 1.

There seems to be some confusion with people saying it can only be used to talk to devices that already have RF. It is actually meant to talk to IR devices by first transmitting to an RF extender that stays hidden away, then it converts that to IR signals.

For example, my HTPC and A/V receiver are in my built-in cabinets along with the Harmony RF extender (which is included with this remote). I can keep the cabinets closed, use the remote to send RF to the extender, and it uses wired IR repeaters to send the signal from the extender to the HTPC and receiver. Everything stays hidden from view and I don't have to point the remote directly at the device.

It's not perfect in terms of ergonomics, but it is the best device on the market at its price point if you don't want to have to have line of sight to your IR devices.

Which is better between this and Logitech ONE?

MegaViper said: Nothing like a football watching, sweaty ball sack scratching soaked, used remote for $100.

Yeah true, but for this price I will disassemble it when it comes and wipe it down with alcohol.

I'm assuming this won't control my X10 system or my Hunter ceiling fan, right ?

Thanks OP. In for one.

I have this remote and a few of the buttons stopped working.
This has been an issue w/the 890 and there are multiple threads on google to be found.

I contacted Logitech as it was out of warranty of course they refused to exchange it. Not only that but they were exchanging some remotes for people earlier until it seemed like it became a major issue.

Total loss of respect for Logitech and the way they handled this.

I've had mine for a couple of years and LOVE it. all buttons work (knock on wood) but my backlight doesn't always work. thinking something is loose inside. If I "wring" the remote slightly when its not lit, it lights up. It is out of warranty, when I contacted Logitech they said they couldn't service it because its discontinued. they offered me half off any remote. I'm a bit leary of the new models with bad reviews of the unreliable RF on them.

I'm jumping at this for another room. green OP.

In for one. Have had the 880 for several years and a couple of the buttons (volume and channel up and down) are getting a bit tired...they need to be pressed just right these days. Also, I'm moving all my equipment to a coat closed for a clean wall-mount, so this timing is perfect. Green for you, OP.

Confused about some of the earlier posts and would appreciate input from owners...

Can you control RF devices directly with this remote, or can you only do RF to the IR transmitter?

Can you control IR devices directly, or only out of the RF to IR transmitter? I'd like to use RF to the IR transmitter in the closet, but still be able to control my ceiling fan and roomba via IR.

With the 880, you could point any RF remote at the 880 and learn the codes. Can you do the same with the 890? Can you do the same with RF with the 890?

Thanks.

Looks like it's out again.

FWIW, I've bought one of these as a refurb from Buy.com. The first one I got had a bad power adapter, but they RMA'ed it (at no cost to me) and got me a new one, which worked fine. With the second one, some stuff was obviously new (the batteries & charger), while others were obviously used (some of the remote emitters, although they provided 3M rubber hoods to restick them). With the remote itself, it was difficult to tell - there was still a sticker over the LCD and it was unscratched. I don't remember about the RF module (which normally sells for $100 by itself).

It's worth noting that Logitech will not support this (at least regarding hardware) once the original warranty is out - that is, if it was first registered/programmed (by its original owner) over a year ago, your only recourse for repair will be via Amazon. If it's been less than a year you may be able to get service (at least, that's what I was told by a Logitech tech, when I first called about the defective power supply).

I'm confused with the "does not support Windows 7". Does that mean I won't be able to program the remote if i have windows 7 os? TIA

solley said: Can you control RF devices directly with this remote, or can you only do RF to the IR transmitter?
No. This only connects to the RF extender. Other RF devices use different communication protocols and frequencies.

Yes, you will be able to do what you want. You can even configure it to work how you wish in regard to whether or not it broadcasts RF, or IR, or both per device. The extender has 4 IR output connectors to which you can attach single, or multi-head IR blasters. During setup you can define which devices are connected to which outputs of the extender A,B,C, or D so you could use two of the same device without changing the channel (with two cables boxes as an example) on both devices.

I think you mean 880 w/ IR, and does it work with the 890 in regards to RF. The answer is no. There is no RF learning, only IR.

I was able to program my 890 with the Windows 7 beta, FWIW...

wonder how many they have ?!

Great remote for the price. I got one the last time they sold @ 99.99. Came in perfect condition.
Alas, my wife is clumsy and dropped the remote on our wood floors (many times). The LCD finally cracked. Remote still works, but can't see anything on the lcd.

I liked the remote enough, I ordered another one this morning.

Logitech wouldn't do anything for me for the cracked lcd but that was expected.

Skipping 18 Messages...

Me too...and except for the packaging (plain brown box), everything looks brand new - IR blasters still have original adhesive, everything still has protective plastic, battery is still sealed...
