1.The Good
* Jack of all trades…
o Has many, many tools/features for users to use including but not limited to registry cleaner, junk/disk cleaner, disk defrag, startup manager, file undelete, secure delete, and EXE password protector.
* Almost no learning curve.
* Automatically creates backups before doing any changes to registry and gives user options to create automatic backups for other tools such as the junk/disk cleaner.
* Has a ‘1-click’ system maintenance option.
* You can schedule times when maintenance will run automatically.
* Each tool/features/module is treated as if it is independent of the others so user can use multiple modules as the same time.
* “WinUtilities Registry Backup” creates non-proprietary .REG backups so user can restore without needing WinUtilities.
* “WinUtilities History Cleaner” has a “plugin” feature which users can use to define custom files/folders to delete.

The Bad
* …but master of none.
o Uninstall manager is simplistic and not much different than the normal uninstaller run by Windows/programs.
o Memory optimizer is the stereotypical, useless memory-overloading type.
o “History Cleaner” (aka privacy cleaner) only supports Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome by default.
o Startup manager does not have the ability to delay startup programs.
o “File Undelete” is a simple MFT reader.

* Lacks a file encryption tool.

I have version 6.2 from an earlier giveaway.

Is it worth doing the upgrade?

probably is since these programs don't always get updated. I'm installing it and like you had gotten an earlier version. If it doesn't overwrite, I'll uninstall the older one.

CCleaner is free, easy to use, effective, and unless you turn stupid - safe. And you don't have to wait for a GAOTD listing for an update.

Thanks OP... I had this nagging box appear on startup about some unidentified something or other not working. Was driving me nuts, but it wasn't worth a typical 5 hours of Windows surgery to figure it out; I just kept hitting the Cancel dialog box. The registry fixer of this app made it go away.

Wants to charge me $40 for registration and cannot go any further in the cleaner until I pay $$$.

Final Verdict
WinUtilities is one of the better software in its class; it is feature filled, and although it does need some work in some areas, generally speaking it works well. I give it a thumbs up and recommend it to anyone that wants it. In terms of free alternatives, TuneUp Utilities 2008, WinOptimizer 5, and Glary Utilities are all worthy rivals to WinUtilities. Lastly, while I will be keeping WinUtilities on my computer, I personally prefer to use specialized software for many tasks that WinUtilties does, such as CleanMem, CCleaner, RevoUninstaller, WinPatrol, East-Tec Eraser, and Auslogics Defrag. In the end, the choice is up to the user if he or she wants a "jack of all trades but master of none", or he or she prefers specialized software.

They want $40 bucks to register and get a key. What is 'free' about that?

I like WinUtilities but I personally now only use Ashampoo WinOptimizer 5. WinOptimizer actually made me like Vista because you can simply and easily tweak vista so the little annoyances are gone. Also I think WinOptimizer does what WinUtilities does plus the tweaking, all for free anytime.
