What does this thing weigh??

repost

8.77 pounds. The OP wasn't exaggerating when the he said he wanted a "nice desktop replacement."

$100 tax kills the deal for me.

however, it is a really good deal... it's $100 less than last week's two $200 coupons (this time they don't stack--if they did this would be smoking hot)

Thanks OP. Just what I need for the price I'm willing to pay.

Added Bluetooth to your config for $25 more. Total came to $1,115.96 (includes NY tax)
Will get 1% back from my Visa, hopefully will get %5 Bing too

Don't bother with the Bing, just get the 5% FatCash.

This is a great deal for a laptop with such configuration. At least that's how I thought when I ordered it. I'm using it now and I have to say I'm disappointed.

Good:
- big bright screen
- remote control, great for watching movies
- stylish finish
Bad:
-Network Card: wireless internet is very unstable, drops every 5-10 minutes even though my router is next to it. My previous Dell laptop never had this issue.
-Blue-Ray Player: the movie stops after 1 hour playing. I have to shut down the laptop and let it cool down for 15 minutes before I can continue the movie.
- The speakers are overrated, it's slightly better than average, but not as good as they advertise
- Up/Down/Left/Right keyboard buttons are VERY VERY small
-Shipping time: took 21 days after order to receive it.

Use BING for this purchase, I got 3% discount but not before I contacted Microsoft several times.

What about performance?
I'm planning to do some development (Visual Studio.NET, ASP.NET, SQL2008) and design (Photoshop) on it. Is it adequate?

Is it noisy? Heating much?

TIA

Does it have a backlit keyboard?

Tested the coupon code and it doesn't seem to work. Did anyone get the coupon code to work successfully? Thanks.

This laptop is very quiet, actually. However, if you play blue-ray, it will get hot rather quickly. I heard several complaints from previous HP users about this overheating issue. Seems like HP has not paid attention to this problem. I haven't had a chance to do really heavy work on this laptop yet. I did a 10-minute movie clip today using Windows Movie Maker, and the computer seemed to get the job done well.

Another CON: this laptop does not have backlit keyboard.

this is a desktop-replacement. It is pretty heavy and bulky. Don't expect to carry it around with you. You'll either break your wrist or drop the laptop sooner or later. You'll also have a hard time finding a backpack or case that actually fits this laptop.

Currently, there are very few 18" models in the market. Until other manufacturers release better 18" laptops, I think this is the best big-screen laptops you can get now.

great deal

can this even be called a laptop?

bought one

Overheats kills the deal plus I have an HP laptop at work that I do not like.

How important is the backlit keyboard?

Does anyone know if HP fixed the screen? The predecessor HDX 18t had a "no bezel" screen (ie. no protruding frame) which rubbed against the keyboard and got all scratched up.

I don't understand this fascination with weight. If it were, say, 50 pounds, that would be a problem. But I can carry 10 pounds just as easily as I can carry 5.

backlit keyboard is optional. this is a monster value.

this is an 18.4" desktop replacement, if you're looking for a small notebook then why'd you even bother clicking here?

Coupon is dead

Wrong, no back-lit keyboard that was the HDX18t. This is just a color matching keyboard.

Who cares about a back-lit keyboard? How many people have actual keyboards that are backlit anyway? Who actually wants all those lights shining at them in the dark?

weight is a problem?
You are talking to a dude who bought the compaq portable II.
That thing was like a suitcase, over 20 pounds....yes it was years ago
so quit crying on the weight on this one and go and buy a netbook, you whiners

I think I saw a 20 in laptop at microstation, but cant remember the brand, Toshiba?

coupon didn't work for me

It looks to be dead, sorry.

I am having a hard time finishing one episode of Mad Men with this DV8T deal! I constantly shuts down everytime I watch a blu-ray movie. I'm going to be complaining to HP about this.

SERIOUSLY! who wants to be able to read their keys in the dark!.... who do HP think they are.... backlit keyboard...most craziest thing i've ever heard!

I love me some backlit keyboard. All my home PCs have them, Priceless!

How long is it until it shuts down?

Let us know what HP saids and thanks.

Just thought I'd chime in on HP's build quality. I bought the HDX18 - which I believe is the previous gen version of this same laptop. I bought it in July. As of now, the keyboard has random keys that have stopped functioning, so I have to use an external keyboard. The headphone jacks both output uneven sound - so I have to set the right side at 50% volume in order to even it out. The hard drive will suddenly start making random beeping and clicking sounds for 10-15 minutes and then it won't do it again for maybe 1-2 weeks. The fan will suddenly start making a loud grinding sound - again it'll do this for 10-15 minutes, and then won't do it again for 1-2 weeks.

I use this as my primary business computer and can't afford to be without it for more than a couple of days.

HP has recognized this computer is a wreck and will fix it under warranty. However, I will be without it for 17 days and there's the chance they'll wipe out everything in the process.

In my youth I sold & serviced computers, so I have no problem swapping out the keyboard, fan and even HD - but of course HP won't allow that. They also will not send a replacement and let me simply transfer my files over. The only option I have is to send back my system and wait 17 days for them to fix it.

With all that said - this current deal is less than I paid for my HDX18.

Uh-oh.

I hope things have improved since that model.

Any one knono if there is a true port replicator available somewhere (like the ones for the older nc models). The one's listed on the HP site are all USB types, so not true replicators as a 27" monitor would have to connected directly to the laptop.

You can always get the Toshiba dynadock u. It has a dvi & vga port in the back. Also there is a new coupon code.

NBTY349821

unfortunately, it only gives you $200 additional off the purchase price

3 weeks since ordered. Still waiting
Shipping date slipped twice already
Meanwhile credit card was charged instantly

Getting very verbose emails from HP full of newspeak
This is not haiku. Just a bit of reality
