Please don't hate on me for asking this, but I am just now learning about laptops and wireless technology so I don't understand some things.
Does this work in place of a router or does this just give you extra "power" from an existing router? And if you use this D-Link adapter, does your router have to be D-Link or can it be a different brand?

This allows your laptop (or desktop) to "talk" to the router, which is in turn connected to the internet. You don't have to pair this with a D-link router; there is a standard so all the equipment is supposed to work together.
