FYI...Costco reviews never get above 2 stars for this. I think Costco is dumping them because they are crap drives.

But, green for the deal OP :-D

I only see price @ $109

Good price. Horrible reviews: 45 reviews with average under 3 stars.

Good luck. Will pass on this one.

Good deal, but most reviews complained of reliability.

... so don't put anything important on it!

LOL, good price but the reviews are astonishingly bad. I can't imagine entrusting 1.5TB of anything to something like this no matter how good the price.

3/5 on Newegg... I'll pass. (Costco also charges tax)

plus tax.
$91.88 total for me.
still think I'll hold out for a better drive.
target may have a WD 1TB for $60 on black friday.

I don't think I can find 1.5 TB of unimportant data to store on this. I guess I just made myself $90

LOL! How can you give green for this? Just cuz of price?

It's got such bad reviews, that the old adage applies here 'you get what you pay for'

It's not a hot deal if it's not reliable. 1.5TB is a lot of data to entrust to this bad boy.

I see several people have had it fail within a couple of months. How many people here will really back up on another hd? And what hd will you back up to? A more expensive reliable one, duh!

So this drive is just a waste of money!

when i add to cart it is still 110. what do i do?

I just returned this drive last week. I had it for 2 months, and then it clicked and died! Lost all my photos, movies and music. I returned it and bought the 1TB HP Simple drive. It cost more, 99.99. But thus far no issues. Time will till. When I 1st got the seagate, sometimes my PC would not read the drive. Now I know it was harbinger of bad things to come. Be careful with this, you get what you pay for. Luckily my photos were backed up. I can live without my movies and music, but not my photos of my kids.

what about ripping the drive out of this and updating the firmware? Wish they'd just sell internal versions at this price.

Indeed Just Dead Paper Weight this is. Mine died in just over a month.. Lucky I bought from costco..returned it... Wait for another better drive at this price point..

These 1.5tb have bad reviews. 1 TBs should be ok

Aren't the 7200rpm drives the bad ones? How about the "green" 5900 rpm drives?

i had one and its still runs good. 109.99-4.99(s/h)-10.06(tax ca)-30(coupon)=95.04. its good price

Staples PMs costco ?!

reviews suck big time! green to op for the deal!

Green for OP!
In for one @ 92.47 delivered. The 109.99 price is the current in-store special.
I've already got two that are nearly full on my home server.
I like how you can adjust the drive auto power down timer. I also disable the status light.

Update
my order did go through to fulfillment and the price is still the same on costco.com.

good luck...I saw this then read the model # and shall pass. They have been lemons since earlier this year; one might think it was firmware but even that didn't solve the problem.

Two best tips I could find are keep it laid flat when using and format to get rid of that junk software on it. Or just rip it out and plug it in directly...

FYI, different model but internally goes for $10 more at CompUSA - I actually have this one and no issues at all (remember I think disabling DMA for it)

I bought one last Winter, I believe, for $140. I didn't actually hook it up until August. It was DOA, click, click, click. I RMA'd it, it had a 5 year warranty, apparently. I used the USPS and it cost $18 to send to Texas. I gave it to a friend for a birthday present last week. He says he'll just fire it up every couple of months to back up data, I wish him well. Before I gave it to him I tried to run smartmontools on it (a Linux hard drive diagnostic), the drive didn't support it (almost every drive I've ever seen supports smartctl). Tempting price, I'll pass.

How hard is it to open this up and remove the drive? Can the enclosure be reused?

if you never did it before, it is pretty hard.

Well for those who would like some background on the current Seagate drives I'd like to point out that they are used in MASS QUANTITYS by the folks at Backblaze. I'd recomend you check out the Backblaze blog. The only two drives reccomended are the Seagate 7200.11 and the 5900 rpm LP variant.

Checkout the entrys from October 7th and September 1st

Why is this drive getting 2/5 stars over 46 reviews on there?

3/5 on Newegg as well, with 46% of people giving it 1/5 stars.

I'm giving this a green especially its from Costco. They have a very good return policy.

As a frequent user of Seagate drives at work and home, I can't believe that the drive is that bad to have such a negative effect. Surely it's the result of a mob-mentality rather than the truth. In fact, I have two of these drives and have no problem with it, one bought a few months ago and one from Costco.

AishaDad said: How hard is it to open this up and remove the drive? Can the enclosure be reused?Google "open Seagate Freeagent" -- lots of hits, including this video: link

BTW, any time you have to open a case by unlocking plastic snaps, first warm up the plastic with a hair dryer so it will be more flexible and less likely to crack. But to repair any cracked pieces, use a solvent like lacquer thinner, acetone, or carburetor/throttle body cleaner, not super glue, which won't make as strong a repair. Let the plastic cure at least 24-48 hours before reassembling.

opened the freeagent. inside is a st31500541as. 5900rpm 32meg buffer. the util files dated may 2009 so the drive is pretty new. i going to format it to ext3 and put into my nas.

I am not worrying return, but I cannot afford lost of 1500GB data even I have double backup. It takes many hours to copy over.
