AGGGH I don't need this but I am SO COMPELLED to buy it.

Good Deal,
Much better built physically than the HP Mediasmarts(IMHO and I own both), quiet, and stylish. Note that you have to use either 2 or 4 hard drives with the built in operating system. If you do an unattended USB install of Windows Home Server, you can use 1,2,3,or 4 drives.

Like the HPs, No video, no sound, just a server.

Can my PS3 access this device without having to turn on my PC?

see if it has a dlna server running , if not search intel nas forums to get it working, if not install windows home server and install dlna of your choice

This may be a stupid question but, do I need to buy Windows Home Server to use this to backup my home computers? I know nothing about networking but I do need a centralized unit to backup my home computers. Thanks for your advice.

The built in operating system will back up computers. It comes with a version of EMC Retrospect to do that.

The software it comes with it described here:

Been kicking myself for missing the HP Mediasmart deals a few weeks back. Can't go wrong with this for ~$150...

Muchas gracias, Amigo.

Got one - thanks.

WARNING: Putting Windows Home Server on this machine is only for very advanced computer users. The windows home server install disc does not have all the drivers you need to get this thing running, so you have to slipstream at least the network driver and the achi driver if I recall correctly that you download from intel. Then you have to make a USB unattended install and install without a monitor because you cannot connect a monitor to this, there is no monitor port on it. Not for the easily frustrated. But this is a hot deal, I have this device, it is very well built and I paid twice as much for it like only 9 months ago.

Also you can install a 2GB ram chip in it. I believe the EMC software will not see the whole 2GB because the linux kernel it uses was not built with support set for over 1GB. Windows Home Server will see the 2GB fine, I have done this.

I only wish it sipped a little less juice.... From Tom's Hardware:

		2x HDD	4x HDD
Sleep 35 W	38 W
Idle 46 W	60 W
Operating	50 W	73 W

I can't really see how it's reasonable to expect that this consume less electricity given the performance it provides. It's not just a dumb storage chip, it can run an OS. That coupled with 11.5W/drive under operation...

I also have this. Very good deal!

Windows Home Server = see the wegotserved forums. Was pretty easy to get that done. Took < 30 mins to make the slip stream.
Upgrades = 2gb (pc4200 - eBay $35) + Intel Core 2 Due E4600 (2.4ghz/2MB cache - eBay $50). Very easy to upgrade this, very nicely built.

Once you have Windows Home Server, then its basically a Windows box. Tired of leaving your PC on for MagicJack on, use this instead. Sabnzbd + mynzb + sabnzbd firefox plugin for usenet downloading. WHIIST to get web pages up and running fast. The list goes on.

I'm looking for something that will backup files from several computers automatically. Plus have files available for my media PC to play. Having had a few HDs fail over the past few years I'd really like to have a secure raid setup. Is this the best option for me? Thank you in advance.

Web access of files would be nice, but isn't vital.

Can you please post the direct link to this thread?

what are you using sabnzbd?

Install Windows Home Server (WHS) on this machine. It will auto-back Windows machines on your network, share media files, and has data redundancy (not RAID, but something more flexible).

Sorry, direct link:

I use sabnzbd for usenet downloading (see usenetserver.com or giganews.com and newzbin.com)

How long can I use the Windows Home Server Evaluation for? It's not stated on the Microsoft site.

Thanks. It's around $100 online, link. I guess this makes it less hot for those don't already have WHS.

I think we are going to see some hot activity in next week. Those looking WHS, should try to wait for HP Media smart.

Can I use different size drives in this or do they all have to be the same?

If it's like every other current MS OS, three months if you slmgr /rearm it.

Deal is dead. Price back up to 199.99

thanks op

bravely said: Can I use different size drives in this or do they all have to be the same?

Yup. It doesn't use RAID so you can mix and match.

OK, I'm confused. The specs in the OP say Raid Level RAID 0 , RAID 1 , RAID 10 , RAID 5

I want to use my various internal, usb and eSATA drives, plug them all into this thing and end up with a NAS with RAID.

Can I do this with the default setup using different sized drives (both internal and external using the USB and eSATA)?

Sorry about that - I thought the question was about Windows Home Server. The Linux OS that comes with the server does use RAID.

Isn't it hardware level RAID.. it doesn't matter what OS you put on it.

this is crazy so far. Wegotserved forum is down, i'm trying to slipstream the drivers in according to the link above and GImageX throws up an "error:???" when unmounting the wim file. I can't find how to add the network drivers since it's an executable. I'm losing it.

Here's the steps for installing Windows Home Server.

Download all the drivers here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2975

Follow all the directions here: http://wiki.wegotserved.com/index.php?title=Slipstream_Windows_Home_Server

Download 7zip to unzip the .exe files. Unzip the AHCI and SATA driver to c:WORKDOS, and you can unzip the rest to a drivers directory. Uze 7zip to unzip the .exe driver files.

I used windows 7 and gimagex part wouldn't work, so use the command line version of imagex.exe in the AIKTools(Your OS version)

when you add the drivers in nLite, make sure you add the drivers in your dos directory, as well as all the extra ones that are in the drivers directory you created earlier

use these commands
mount: imagex /mountrw C:WORKboot.wim 1 C:WORKWIM
unmount: imagex /unmount /commit C:WORKWIM

Finally follow all the directions here: http://wiki.wegotserved.com/index.php?title=Turn_your_USB_Flash_Drive_Into_a_Windows_Install_Disk to make the USB Bootable.. the go back to the slipstream instructions and follow them again.

Then turn off the server. Insert your USB key, hold in the reset button (by the back USB ports, it's not marked), power up the server and hold the reset button for about 5 seconds.

Wait 1 - 1 1/2 hours and you'll have a server with watever you named it in that qs.ini. Install the connector and you're good.

When in says to "Copy dos drivers" what does that mean? Thanks.

you need to copy the files in the AHCI SATA zip file that you downloaded. These are the F6 drivers for the controller that are needed for the installer to see the drive

Consdering a mac mini consumes 14 watts while idle , this thing does suck up a lot of juice, especially considering it's going to be on a lot. That's a deal breaker for me.

The mac mini only has a 1 laptop hard drive. This thing can have up to 4 full sized drives, plus the cooling needed for them... you can't really compare the two.

I got it running last night, works great, is very quiet... it's a bit larger than I expected.

apples and oranges

I tried to install one disk and it doesn't appear to boot - power and disk led are amber, with the status led flashing blue. The disk is wiped clean. I've read differing strategies to force the device to boot to DOM - one being from off to hold the power and reset button down. This doesn't seem to work since the device turns on and then turns off. Anyone else struggling to get this working?

So i set it up with WHS, worked great for a week, now no link light on the Network. Tried different cables, different switches.. it's dead. Now it's gonna cost 20 bucks to ship it back to Newegg for replacement. Not such a great deal after all.

Skipping 1 Messages...

Can anyone who made the correct bootdisk post it online for the rest of us - SANS your win key of course
