First the good news: Many people who downloaded and used for free the 2007 and 2008 'Express' Editions of Microsoft Office Accounting 2007 and 2008 may be unaware that Microsoft released an updated 2009 version months ago. 2009 has not been promoted or even mentioned on most Microsoft Office sites but it is available for download right now at:
Now the BAD NEWS: If you want want to download version 2009 or any earlier version you must download it today, November 16, 2009, because (officially at least) Microsoft has declared that none of its versions of Accounting Express will be downloadable after November 16. I was able to download it at 2 PM PST so the link should still work but if you want it download it immediately as Microsoft could very well pull the plug any time now.
This information came from a third-party site, but plainly Microsft has already pulled promotional copy from Microsoft.com so the end is surely at hand.

I have used Office Accounting Pro 2009, and it was very inefficient. It's very hard to find what you are looking for. The menus and tool bars are poorly designed.
It's worse than QB.

I didn't think that was possible.
I wanted to switch to Office Accounting because Intuit changed the online banking in QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 09 and made it extremely hard to use, and Microsoft's products were known for its user friendliness. Unfortunately, my first a few hands on experience with the software was quite a nightmare. Even so, I still had a friend to try it. In just two days, I had to replace it with QB.
It was OK. Not sure that I've used any small business accounting system that I really like a lot. Anyway, looks like they are discontinuing the entire Office Accounting line. While it says that it will be supported for 5 years, that doesn't necessarily mean that there will be any further development or fixes. Not sure that I'd want to tie something like my accounting system to a product on life support.
