I recently got this from Amazon for around this price but with a free 4G iPod shuffle.

The service is great, look around for a better deal than this though.

Why does it check out w/ Amazon and yet Amazon's own web site has it for a higher price?

Because Buy.com has a store through Amazon, it will offer the "checkout with Amazon" option.
But you don't need to do that, just add to cart and checkout through Buy.com

That is also why Buy.com's price is lower, and their deal comes with 6 month's of Premier instead of 2 month's if purchased through Amazon themselves.

Because I know little about ooma - can someone compare this to Costco's offerings?

I know it's been covered before. But every time I start to read a thread on ooma, I get overwhelmed with info and never make a purchase.

For your case I would suggest moving on from a DIY voip setup

Ooma is the best, some people want it from costco because costco has a good return policy. I don't think it matters, just find it at the best price you can. Ooma rocks, it's a great service at a great price and the equipment seems very well built.

If Ashton Kutcher's backing it, I'm in........

Ooma also boasts an illustrious group of investors and advisers, including Ashton Kutcher from Hollywood and Sean Parker from Napster, Plaxo, Facebook and The Founders’ Fund.

There are two benefits from Costco:
1. Best return policy in case ooma...
2. There are $50 for international call if you do need.

I'm just going by my experience about a year or so ago purchasing an Ooma system from Buy.com. Buy.com shipped the scout but not the main Ooma hub of which the scout as I understand was of no use without the main hub. On the package of the Scout was clearly marked package 2 of 2 packages meaning there were 2 packages shipped but I only apparently recived 1 (the Scout) of the packages. There were even 2 tracking numbers on the packing slip in the only package I recived wich was the Scout, When I checked the tracking numbers through the U S Postal system sure enough Package 2 (the Scout) showed shiped and recieved but package 1 (The Ooma main Hub) flat out showed not shipped and was still sitting in the warehouse. I contacted Buy.com about not reciving the Main Ooma Hub and the fact that it was still sitting in their warehouse to which Buy.com replied we have information that you recieved your package on xx-xx-xxxx end of story on their part no matter how much I explained that by their own information they still had package 1 (the main Ooma Hub) still in their warehouse. Of course I contested the charges with my credit card company proving to them I never recieved the main package number 1, the credit card company agreed and stoped payment to Buy.com. Now the low life act of Buy.com, after the credit card stoped payment to Buy.con I recieved the cheeriest email from Buy.com saying that they understoud that I wasn't satisfied with my purchase from Buy.com and since they wanted everyone to be satisifed with Buy.com's service they wrer refunding my purchase price back to my credit card company. I KID YOU NOT THIS HAPPENED.
In fairness to Buy.com I had made more than a few small amount purchases from Buy.com through Google checkout without any problems. But all along I keep hearing horror stories like the above about Buy.com and continued to hope this never happened to me but wollaa as soon as I made a major purchase (the Ooma system)and it was my first purchase from Buy.com not using Google checkout <--I don't know if this made a difference or not" the above was the result.
To sum it all up if you make this purchase from Buy.com make sure you do it with a credit card and can and know how to contest the charges in case something goes wrong as it did in my case. In short if I had made this purchase with a prepaid debit card or money order etc. I probably would have just lost 200 plus dollars.

Wheres the Tylenol!

Edit to say I bought the Ooma system from Amazon and to quote others statement about Ooma Man oh Man the Ooma system Rocks. I'm highly satisfied with the Ooma system.

Picked up the Hub/Scout from Dell for $199 two months ago. Ported my number from Vonage, which took about 3 weeks. Then I canceled the Vonage. The service has been flawless - in fact, most of the time, I don't think about it - it just works. I have it hooked to my router and am using QoS without any problems. In four more months, it will have paid for itself (based on what I was paying Vonage).

My advice is not to get caught up in all the verbiage about old Hub vs. Telo, terms-of-service, etc. There are subtle differences, but in the end, every day you waste comparing the two is a day you could have canceled your old service and be saving money.

Has anyone done an analysis of buying it at Buy.com vs Amazon? Right now both offer free shipping, but Amazon is slightly higher in price but charges no sales tax for me.

Just hooked mine up yesterday and began the porting, what a breeze...

Depending on your state, Buy.com will charge you tax. Tax me good, Tax me REAL good!

If you get this at Buy.com for $189.99 (using coupon) your cost would be as follows:

$205.65 California 8.25%
$201.86 Massachusetts 6.25%
$197.59 New York 4%
$203.29 Tennessee 7%

$228.46 Amazon's in Cart Price

NOTE: You get 6 MONTHS of Premier w/Buy vs. 60 DAYS through Amazon

My breakeven will be as follows:
$229.98 total for ooma & porting charge / $35.99 Vonage monthly = 6.3 months, after that it's all gravy!!!!

The real point here is don't hem and haw, research and compare like I did for 3 months ($120.00 wasted), JUST BUY IT!!!!

anyone have ooma connected to their dish network receivers?

Is three way calling included free in basic ooma plan ? thx.

I would be all over it if Canada was included in the standard package like most Voip providers have.

No

I have Ooma hooked up to Uverse - works like a charm UNLESS I try to download a big torrent - that seems to knock out my phone service.

have Vonage connected to my dish network receivers but want to make sure ooma works with these receivers before i switch.

I also have Dish Network. Yes, you can use Ooma. You just have to reprogram your Dish receiver(s) to use a prefix when dialing out.
Press MENU - 6 - 1 - 4.
Highlight prefix code.
Press select.
In the boxes at the bottom, enter *99.
Select save at the right.

Works like a charm!!!

If anyone wants $50 referal code for Ooma Telo, then PM me. Only have three to give out.

I also have 3 x $50 referral codes for Ooma Telo - price will be $199.99 since you need to buy at their store...i didn't pay tax tho when i purchased my 1st gen hub (TX)
PM me for codes

I'm surprised that Ooma doesn't include Canada in their calling plans, I guess that might be something that they could add on down the track.
