Nice roundup. It would be also be helpful to have the graphics chip listed.

I just clicked on the Toshiba M500 deal and it went to a generic "special offers" page w/ printers & stuff. Are these the actual links that go live on BF or do we need to search around for these deals again on BF?

thanks for the summary!
Unfortunately those are the auto links, and not direct links to the deals, as they do not go live until Black Friday, and most require in-store purchase.

I will do my best to keep updating this thread with new information as it comes in, as well as adding additional info to the current laptops, but many of the ads are purposefully vague, and difficult to pin down which exact model/parts are being offered. Please feel free to share any additional information or opinions as your input is always welcome.
It is my personal duty in life to inform everyone that Acer has the worst customer support. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told: "He's too busy", my reply: "I can wait", rebuttal: "No, he will not speak to you, he is too busy"...very long story, but thats the gist of what really caught me off guard.

3 years ago I had bought a Acer lapy for about $600 from best buy and I had to call customer support for the DVD burner not working, under warranty, they did bother to even listen to what I had to say. They just denied it that its not under warranty, called Best Buy they said, its mfr. So I end up selling it on eBay for little loss, but I made sure I will never buy Acer in this life.
The prices are just so so IMO. No more big of a deal since we can find a laptop for less than 400 bucks on a regular basis. For these prices, I wonder why anyone think about any rumor.

Acer laptops are perfectly fine. I've owned several and sold many others, all with no problems. These rare bad experiences can, and do, happen with all computer companies. I would take these posters comments with a grain of salt, and not let them deter you from purchasing an Acer product if you are so inclined.
For those who don't realize it, or are not up to speed on recent developments, Acer is not the Acer of years past. In fact, Acer is on track to become the #1 worldwide manufacturer of computers in 2010, surpassing HP. That's right people, they are fast approaching #1 worldwide.
Since you never had a problem you must not have dealt with their customer support. And being #1 doesn't mean you're a better company, it just means you are better at selling your wares.

I dealt with customer support and with the exception of her accent it all went very well

As far as Hackintoshes go, usually anything with an Intel processor should be good to go as Apple has used both ATI, Intel, and Nvidia graphics. The other issues to be concerned with are the sound and wifi drivers since there are a lot of stray chipsets out there.
The best deal is the WalMart laptop for $198. I can't see them having more than 5 to 10 per store as a way of getting people to come and hoping they stay and buy other stuff.
There haven't been much deals on netbooks and laptops so far this year which is pretty surprising.
Obviously regional, but Menards has an Augen 7" Netbook: TFT LCD, 533Mhz, 2GB flash mem (IOW, no hard drive), SD card, WiFi, Windows CE - $119.00 (after $20 in-store credit rebate)

I have also had horrible experiences with Acer products, but as others have mentioned, I am not the mass population, so I take my own experience with a grain of salt. You are much better off looking at the repair statistics for thousands of owners, such as those published by Consumer Reports. They typically have 10,000-50,000 owners surveyed, which gives you a broader representation.
I second the request for a separate desktop thread. The laptop deals seem kind of ho-hum this year, nothing too exciting, but I do need to get one this year...

For a suggestion, I recommend DO NOT BUY any HP laptop. I have a 17 inch dv9000 that has a burned out video chip after only two years. Many, many people have had this same problem (see www.hplies.com). It appears to be a design flaw in the laptop. HP has refuse to repair this and says there is nothing they can do for the purchaser. So beware of buying any laptop from HP. Just a heads up to everybody.
Updated the quick summary to sort the list based on major type + price.
I will update all that have processor numbers ID'd already with the PassMark ( http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php ) ratings into each of them. Please provide additional processor information if it is't specific. This will help determine a general overall comparison between two similar priced ones.
Example: The $200 eMachines is a TF-20, while 64 bit is old and slow compared even to a Celeron 900 that is the current $250-$300 rage, which itself is about 20% slower than the typical Pentium Dual Proc T2xxx chips that were common in $300-$400 laptops even 2 years ago. There has not been a huge increase, in fact a slight decrease in speed from the previous two black friday's on sub $350 laptops, at least according to the general PassMark ratings. Individual specific tests of course may vary.
This is what I was talking about earlier, and is the reason that I have been loyal to Toshiba for the last 10 years (they have been #1 every year this chart has been published during last 10 years).
"75,000 people were surveyed, and this graph shows the percentage of brands that have ever been repaired or had a serious problem. We've adjusted the data to eliminate differences due to age or whether the computer was covered by an extended warranty. Models within a brand might vary, and changes in design or manufacture might affect reliability. Still, choosing a brand with a good repair history can improve your odds of getting a reliable model."
The real surprise this year is seeing Dell at the bottom of the list, as they have historically been in the middle of the pack or better. As the summary states, some individual models fair better/worse than others within a manufacturer. I can vouch for what someone posted about the DV9000 having known issues, but that is just 1 model out of hundreds that HP has.
EDIT: I am attaching a screenshot in case you cannot view everything in the link above...

I think that HP G60-508US at Office Depot is supposed to be $299, not $229, unless they have changed the price recently. For $229, it would be a pretty good deal.

Since I'm not the OP, I can't change their list, but the sorted by price list in the quick summary is now up to date. Thanks.
