tomtom ONE 140 3.5" Portable GPS Navigation System

Regular Price $149

$79.99 Shipped

Unless the model # is mislabeled, Dell's website is incorrectly calling this "text to speech," meaning it calls out the street names. I have a 130S (the 'S' designates Speech on the 130S and I thought it was the same for 140 series), so I went to their website to make 100% sure!

You don't want it without the text to speech--you can find them for $10-20 more and you'll be glad you did.

.

I don't see where it says "text to speech" anywhere in the description. This is NOT a "text to speech" unit. I am wondering if it's possible to reprogram the unit to accept TTS.

Every gps I have bought has TTS and I never use it. It is muted all the time. If I'm on the phone I don't want the gps shouting out commands. I use the distance before you have to turn info and when I get close, I look at the graphic to see which off ramp, street etc to take. If you have multiple exits close to one another, sometimes the audio does not differentiate. IMHO.

"It provides spoken turn-by-turn instructions that guide you to any address in US, Canada and Mexico including more than 7 million preloaded...."

TTS (text to speech) means it can speak street names. Simply saying "After 1 mile, turn left." is not TTS. It's just pre-recorded voice.

Dang it, I've needed one of these for a while

Does anyone know if these TomToms allow you to load Europe maps on them?

Sorry about that Miss fancypants, I am much more awake now so I won't make that mistake again

Sorry, I don't trust Dell any more.

I tried to buy a $99 1.5TB external hard drive at the beginning of November. It had 3-5 day shipping, but when I received my confirmation e-mail, the expected delivery date had changed to the 20th. I e-mailed them, and was told it was 3-5 day delivery from the date of shipping. Oh well, I thought, I can live with the wait. Today I reveived another e-mail from them telling me the expected delivery date was now February 1, 2010. I e-mailed them, and got told that it would take 4 days to respond to my e-mail, so I phoned instead. I was told, in rather belligerent terms, that it was out of stock, and that I would just have to wait. I promptly cancelled my order. Not once did anyone offer an explanation without me asking why first. Nor did anyone apologise for the delay. All I got was a surly attitude in both my phone call and my e-mail response.

I went to Frys website this morning and ordered the same drive for the same price. I received a confirmation e-mail one hour later telling me that my order had been shipped, and giving me a tracking number. THAT'S how it sould be done. Dell could learn a thing or two from them.

Well, Miss fancypants only participates in clothing or handbag or grocery topics. If a post involving technical details like this, you can be sure it is Mr fancypants who are posting using her id.

Back to the topic, it is nice to have TTS, but in reality, "Turn left to Escalatatis Street" is no different than "Turn left here." I never double checked the road sign before I made the turn. (You may not even have a chance to do that unless you want to block the intersection.) And I do not really care what the street name is.

OTOH, voice guide is very important for car navigation. You do want to keep your eyes on the road instead of on the GPS screen (in this case, tiny screen).

If it is Navcore (Linux) based system, yes, it is possible. If it is WinCE based (old) system, you are out of luck with tomtom software.

I'm starting to feel the same way. I ordered a laptop from the outlet and was never given any tracking info. Hell, it still don't.

It's even better that FedEx never tried to deliver to my door or leave a note, just left it at the apartment building office where it sat until I went there to ask about it.

Anyway, between this and them canceling the $199 HD desktop with $60 GC card scam the other day, I'm not even going to think about spending any real money with them. Oh, closing the NC plant has me riled up too

On the phone while driving, AND looking at a GPS? For shame...
