I was going to Bestbuy to pick up the Sony - BRAVIA / 40" Class / 1080p / 60Hz / LCD HDTV
Model: KDL-40S5100 | SKU: 9222496 for $718.99 when it just so happens that they are having their Black Friday prices already and it's a lot lower than advertised. For only $599.99. I quietly picked one up.

This is in the Philadelphia, PA area.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+BRAVIA+/+40%22+Class+/+1080p+...

Everything came out to around $645 after 7% tax. Not sure if this is happening across all Bestbuys though. Might want to pay a visit yourself.

I also just came back from BestBuy in Farmington Hills MI, and the same model of Sony TV was available for 597 + tax.

Same in Dallas TX: $597 + taxes

I'm just curious. Does the refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz really make a difference? I don't watch sports much, just lots of regular tv and movies. Thanks for any insight. Good deal though, green for you.

Does BB adjust price if I do a in-store pickup?

I have the 2008 version of this TV and to my eyes sports looks just fine to me. It's a really good TV for the $$$ and this deal is $120 less than I paid a year ago.

Yes it helps overall picture quality + there are higher contrast rates

I do not know anything about TVs, except how to watch them. If our TV is on with a good HD source when people visit we get comments about how it almost looks 3d. I don't know if 120hz is doing that or not, maybe somebody more knowledgeable can answer that question.

Thanks for the post. I just bought one. It is advertised as $597 and I got the last one.

You can also pricematch at Sears to get better price.
I was just wander around Sears Escondido a little bit earlier tonight and there was a guy (possibly a FWer ) tried to pricematch with this TV deal. There was no problem at all.

It is great deal. The same model was for $719 in Frys last week.

Just one note of caution with this model... I jumped on a deal back in july for about 650 from Dell and the TV is great if you get a non-defective one. Check out the avsforum thread Sony now offers a premium exchange service where they send you a refurb and you ship them back yours. I am waiting to get my refurb now.

The two issues that are most common - sound intermittently breaks up over HDMI (this happens at least once a day for me). And color shifting - when I watch shows that have a darker background the reds will shift color... hard to describe but it is annoying.

This happens on the 40, 42 and 46 models as well as on the S and V version.

I wonder if some of these issues have to do with the service?, I have the 40" and my neighbor also has the same . we bought them together and he has Comcrap for his service ,I have AT&T Uverse. when we compare identicle channels, AT&T has a better picture and sound.

I did a price match (Fry's) at Best Buy but I had to return the item and buy it back again at the new price.

This TV is beautiful. I got it a few weeks ago at Wal-Mart for $400 - they were selling new units in damaged boxes super cheap. I hooked it up to my roof antenna and I get around 35 channels, most in HD. I also hooked it up to a tiny OptiPlex for Internet viewing.

can't believe I gave BB green! good find op!

Yup, i went to Best Buy yesterday and found this out (check the Best buy Black Friday thread and the Black Friday TV thread on Fatwallet). The 46-inch Sony Tv is also on sale for $797....

In for one. Nice find OP. They had several different signs out at the local BB in Evansville,IN.

Sweet deal OP. Out of the 42" so I got the last 46". Beautiful!

I had a rain check from the WalMart 42" Sharp lcd on 11.7, but they don't know when they will get their rush shipment in. So glad that WalMart was slow to ship the Sharp Thanks!

Oh! man this one is better than the one thats going to be on BF sale..
Can't believe this one...just picked one and this has better contrast than the advertised one...thx a ton buddy...

Thanks a bunch for letting us know. I picked one up this am. Looked great on display. Better than waiting for BF sale, and a better tv to boot!

one sitting in the middle of the store - can't miss it!

why not just get the Toshiba from frys for $500

Thanks. Got one. Saw the sign "black friday price today" in store.

hi there the Toshiba TV in Frys is 40RV525? or Just need to know whats the difference between
the Toshiba 40RV525 and the Toshiba 40RV525R/U

Pl let us know...looks gud deal though...

Thank you! I got one too, at the Pasadena, CA store. They seemed like they had about 5 or 6 left.

collegeville pa, store has plenty of these for 597.. went to pickup but ended up buying 42" TC-P42X1 for 540+tax

plenty left with "BF SIGNS" OHH....
and the ONE PAGE OVERLAY for BB ad for BF will most likely have lower
prices of many of these overstocked items.. and slowww selling

I see 3 of the cheapest 46" Sony's on BB's site:

Model: KDL-46V5100 for $1,039.99 (on sale)
Model: KDL-46S5100 for $1,077.99 (on sale)
Model: KDL-46W5100 for $1,329.99 (on sale)

So which one of the above is $797 because if it's true I'll be there Sunday first thing.

The KDL-46S5100 is the one on sale for $797.

HOWEVER, if you are in the market for a bluRay player as well, get the KDL-46V5100, there is a deal that if you buy that TV and the Sony N460 BluRay player (Netflix capable), then the whole package is $1015 plus tax (the 46V5100 is better than the 46S5100, and the package is cheaper than if you got the 46S5100 ($797) and the BluRay player ($249) separately. It's basically the same deal they got on Amazon.com for the same combo.

I just purchased the combo today...however, delivery won't be for at least another 3 weeks...they're backordered here in SoCal.

do these have led backlight, or are they old tech?

Guys u have one more choice at Frys
check this out- LG42LH30 at $599...looks cool...

Thanks a lot OP. Nice find.

Which is better Samsung or Sony? I keep seeing posts about how samsung lcd's have a deeper black and better gradients and how Sony's have slightly sharper picture.

the guy at Best Buy told me the 40" Sony had Samsung parts in it. What are you thinking about this TV compared to the Samsung 40" for ab the same price?

Samsung 40" LCD $597

I don't understand why people are rushing to get this deal while the Amazon 40" (120) HZ is just 610 shipped. For people like me (CA etc) & most taxable states this is a far better deal if you take taxes and fees into consideration and you get 120Hz model.

Part of the deal is, you get the high end (s560 or n460) blu-ray player for $143 shipped. If you don't want the blu-ray they sell for $200 easily on eBay.

What am I missing? Just curious. Don't mean to thread-crap. (the Amazon deal is dead now as they are OOS, but both deals were running in parallel for a while. I just ordered mine yesterday).

damn i was pretty set on the Sony until i read a bunch of reviews like this...they are from March 2009 but they are the exact same model tv, size and everything. This is def. making me lean way more towards the Samsung.

"The automatic black level adjustment is annoying. "I guess that's what I get for purchasing the TV when it just comes out. This was a nice television until I started noticing how it automatically adjusts the backlight in dark scenes after about 5 seconds,"

"What's not so great: Automatic darkening feature with no option to disable "Good TV for the price, I just wish I had seen Noby's review before I bought it. I was very happy with this TV until I discovered that during dark scenes the backlight dims after a couple of seconds"

I've seen other bravia models with the same issue, you need to upgrade the firmware. I'm not sure if this particular model has an upgrade though.

I checked out the Best Buy in NJ and this deal is ON. You can't find this deal in their website. Even most of their staff aren't aware of this promotion when you call the store up to check on it. The only thing that is standing between me and the TV right is the review on the "automatic black level adjustment" that is there in almost every review.

Appreciate any help in decide between this 40S500 (30k:1 contrasct, 3 HDMI) vs Samsung LN40B500 (40k:1, 2 HDMI). Price is same

I just received my UPS tracking number for the 50lb package... it's supposed to arrive next thursday, I'll let you guys know how everything turns out =)

Yes, please let us know...curious to hear your feedback on this one!

I finally got the TV, everything was in perfect working order and sealed... Oddly, it came with 2 sealed remotes. I just upgraded the firmware and the image is perfect. Not bad for 560 USD shipped
